They're here!
The initial batch of several hundred MX-5s arrived at the port of San Diego from the factory in Hiroshima on board the Phoenix Leader, a 636-foot vehicle carrier ship registered in Panama and operated by Japanese shipping giant NYK Lines. The vehicles are currently being processed at the SoCal port, with deliveries to commence "in the next several weeks,"

Called the 2 dealers closest to me. Both gave the indication it'll be mid-August to September before they have stock units available.

I called my local Mazda dealers.. nothing for a test drive. All pretty much pre-sold.

^Yep, pretty sure all they've likely gotten so far are Launch Editions.
At the rate we're going, it'll likely be a 2017 that I end up with. Wife will need a car before me. We'll be swapping my parents back (we've had their 4Runner since April), and we need the space.

Also, forgot to mention, a local dealer got one in & called me.
I can't get up there to give it a drive.
I think it's listed on their website with just a stock photo: Soul Red/Tan GT (launch edition maybe?) automatic $30k

Why would you want to test drive an automatic Miata??

I won't test drive it with the automatic. It's just me though.

I dunno if driving a completely stock, automatic Miata would be any fun. I for sure wouldn't drive out of my way to test one out, just to feel the chassis. I agree about the clutch feel and shifting though. That's worth driving for.
The Miata chassis is nothing to write home about, to be honest. Even the NC, without a bunch of additional aftermarket braces is kind of meh. I have four braces on mine and my doors still shake like a motherfucker over railroad track crossings. I'm now replacing the hardened rubber OEM door blocks for stiffer ones. Supposed to help with stiffening the car a bit more.
Stock, the s2000 was WAY stiffer than any Miata up until now (not sure if that's still the case, but i wouldn't be surprised if it is). I have my doubts this new one will be any much better, seeing as it's smaller and lighter. In comparison, Honda spent a lot of time and money getting the s2000 chassis so stiff. Part of all that was reflected in the s2000s higher price.

If I happen to have some free time & am in the vicinity of the dealer, I'll swing in to check it out, auto or not.
Told him if a Club comes in he said I'd be the first he calls.

I have said this before... if only Honda continued where they left off in 2009 and made a spiritual successor to the S2000, I would be in one.
But at any given point I could see myself in either of the two Japanese roadsters. So nice that these options are available to us.

i think a FRS/BRZ convertible with stiffened chassis and some weight reduction to offset the added material will be a great roadster for less than $30k

Car designed to be hardtop ready
But hardtops will not come from Mazda
Also, end of the article:

When asked whether that meant self-driving cars sit against the company's vision, Yamamoto's response was straighforward:
"There will be no autonomous Mazdas."

I wouldn't having the option of a hard top to increase rigidity.

^ I believe so, Mazda just isn't going to be the one producing them, they'll all be 3rd party. They just engineered the ND to be hardtop ready.
Also, it seems the coupe idea is out the window.

Sorry my brain farted there. It should read, "I wouldn't mind having the option of a hardtop"

A car available as a convertible (with a backseat) is more :ghey: than a dedicated roadster. I consider a V6 convertible Mustang or even a convertible FR-S more questionable than a Miata. Hell, I don't consider a Miata questionable at all.
#473
I skimmed and got a little mixed up. That is a bit disappointing that they won't offer hardtops. But the aftermarket will easily fill that void.

If you move the BRZ's front seat all the way back, it think it will look fine, since the rear seats are really made for infants anyways.

They have relaxed the statements that we won't see a Mazdaspeed, though

Mazda really need to do some TLC within their line up.
Arent they the only brand that does not have a V6 or turbo (non SUV cars) in their line up?

I know it seems contrary, but I don't believe the hardtop will help much with rigidity. You definitely need to get aftermarket braces for that. It just doesn't really fasten down to much. The A pillars are still weak as shit.
My NC has the power retractable hardtop. Very nice to have indeed. But that thing does zero for rigidity or noise. I think it's actually even louder, lol. Here's to hoping that Mazda releases a power hard top for the MMC. It adds minimal weight, but is wonderful to have and is much more durable than the soft tops. I've never heard of anyone replace a factory hard top.

Noooooo hope they just keep it soft top only. That's the point of Miata!
