Wide tires aren't really necessary in a ~2200lb car, plus really wide tires would kill steering feel.
And I love the design. I see a lot of 4c in the rear end. Can't wait to see it in person. I just want to know power numbers.

The tail lights bother me the most.
Also, at the end of the reveal the guy said there would be another model with 17" wheels, stepped off stage then the broadcast ended
the presenter was caught saying "I dragged that out as long as I could" before the mic cut out too, heh.

Also, if you look on MazdaUSA, the 2016 MX5 link says "Preproduction model shown". Wonder what might get changed between now & actual release.
I don't so much mind the 16" wheels, as long as they're proportionately fit to the car without an excessively tall sidewall.

'08 MX5 GT 6spd.
I've got 245s on mine and the steering feel is all still there, it's just slightly heavier which it needed anyway. The only drawback I've noticed is the tramlining which can catch you off guard.

agree on the 17s, hopefully they're a little wider than the 16s. The 4lug thing isn't a killer for me.

Sticky will get you further than wider, but a 195?!? 215-225 would be a much better all around size.

Eh I don't really like, though I could live with it in black I suppose. The NB was the only good-looking one. Otherwise this is the same as every other Miata, good car that needs more power and a fixed roof.

I could see that happening sooner or later. Mazdaspeed version as well, but that wouldn't be for several years, if that.
The other rumor is that the PRHT might have a bit more sound deadening. I like the lines on it better, and I need a relatively quiet car for DD duty...

it depends on the type of fun you want to have.
You want track/autocross type of fun then you will need better and wider tires. The feel of having extra capability to go faster in the corner but have to hold back because of crapper/skinny tires is not fun, it is sad!
or if you want drifting fun (not competition), burnout, power slide kind of fun, then yah you can just use pretty much any tires.

Just prefer the open top in this case.

The car is meant to handle, not drift. The put small tires on it to save on weight and increase gas mileage, likely the same for the GT86. Its cost effective and very practical to have smaller common size tires. Kicking the back end out is fun, but not being able to and trying really really hard is more fun. Mine won't break loose at any speed I'm comfortable with.

and yes, people will upgrade the wheels and tires anyway on a car like this. The chief engineer of the FR-S has mentioned that a few times.

The United States’ version of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 will get a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine, the company confirmed today. Combined with the Skyactiv-MT manual transmission, the fourth-gen MX-5’s powertrain should prove similar to the existing car’s setup.
With that familiar powertrain taken to the next level of efficiency and refinement wrapped in the new, lighter, stiffer fourth-generation chassis, the MX-5’s legendary reputation for driving pleasure at an attainable price should not only remain intact, but grow.
While details on the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine remain masked, Mazda says it offers “ultra-high compression,” hinting that its output may be greater than the 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G unit found in the Mazda3, which rates 155 horsepower.
In the Mazda3 with the manual transmission, that engine also rates 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway; in MX-5 tune it may yield slightly better or slightly worse efficiency, but either way, the new car should prove considerably more efficient than the current MX-5, which scores EPA ratings of 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway and 24 mpg combined with the six-speed manual transmission.
On top of its promising dynamics, the 2016 MX-5’s exterior design is far more striking than at any point in the previous three generations. Likewise, the interior quality and materials appear to be above those of its predecessors.
All in all, the fourth coming of the world’s most popular two-seat roadster holds a great deal of promise for the enthusiast.
