Post Lamborghini LP550 Gallardo for Geneva

No, not enough power.

From Worldcarfans...

The Lamborghini Gallardo has been around in its current guise without any major facelifts since its launch in 2003. The car still looks dramatic and modern and has aged well, but parent company Audi has been feverishly working away at the Gallardo’s V10 and in various forms has been implanting it into its A8 and A6 models with resounding success. Could a revised V10 find its way into the heart of Gallardo for Geneva?

The Superleggera edition brought with it lower weight and a tweaked 5.0 L V10 that produced around 522bhp but this was more of a special edition rather than a thoroughly re-worked model. We understand that Lamborghini may be preparing a LP550 version of the Gallardo which would use a 5.2 L FSI version of the V10 to produce somewhere in the region of, you guessed it, 550bhp, up on the standard car’s 520bhp. It would back this up with an improved torque figure of 530Nm verses the standard car’s 510Nm

Rumours abound in the run up to major motor shows and Geneva is no different. This rumour however seems to make a lot of sense when you think it through. Motor manufacturers are always trying to cut costs via streamlining and parts sharing and it would seem odd for Lamborghini to continue to use the 5.0 L version when Audi are using the 5.2 L. Roll on Geneva.

Les pics of le Gallardo LP550...

From Autoblog...

Inside Line reports that Lamborghini will unveil an updated Gallardo at Geneva, and that, like its big, bad MFer of a brother, the Murcielago LP640, the "baby" Lambo will get an addition to its proper name. The Gallardo LP550, as it's expected to be called, will now deliver 550 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque from its 5.2L ten-cylinder (up from 5.0L). Fully restyled front and rear fascias will reportedly adorn Sant'Agata's latest monument to hauling ass, too. Under that new skin sits a stiffer architecture, a lighter all-wheel-drive system, and updated versions of the car's manual and sequential gearboxes. Naturally, all this will come at a price, so look for the Gallardo's $180,000 sticker to rise accordingly. We don't foresee Lambo shoppers letting that stop them from pulling out the 'ol checkbook, and we'll be on hand in Geneva to see the newest bull enter the ring.

550hp but only 390 tq? Not sure if I agree with that. A motor that size should be making more torque!

Well I don't know the technical explanation but I would think it has to do with their design and performance focus. A high-revving NA engine won't make as much torque as you might think- in fact, it might make considerably less than you might think. And, 5.2L is quite small for a V10. It may also be related to displacement - but the evidence to that effect does not coincide as concretely as it does with redline. Other examples:

M5 - 5L V10, 500hp, 383 ft/lb, 8250 redline
Carrera GT - 5.7L V10, 605hp, 437 ft/lb, 8400 redline
F50 - 4.7L V12, 513hp, 347 ft/lb, 8500 redline
F355 - 3.5L V8, 380hp, 268 ft/lb, 8500 redline
F360 - 3.6L V8, 400hp, 275 ft/lb, 8500 redline
even the Enzo is quite low compared to its hp - 6L V12, 660hp, 472 ft/lb, 8200 redline.

And, think of cars like the S2000 and RX-8. I don't know if its necessarily the same thing going on, but it very well could be.

Next, consider this - same engine, different redlines and corresponding tuning/numbers:

Audi S8 - 5.2L V10, 450hp, 398 ft/lb, 7000 redline
Gallardo - 5.2L V10, 520hp, 376 ft/lb, 8000-8100 redline

Look at cars like the Viper and Z06 and you will see torque figures closer to hp along with considerably lower redlines.

Post Lamborghini to name new Gallardo LP560-4

From Leftlanenews...

The new Lamborghini Gallardo is set for its Geneva Motor Show debut in just a few days, but what Lamborghini will actually call the car remains a bit of a mystery. Earlier reports indicated that the Gallardo would be called the LP550 – falling in line with the Murcielago LP640 — but a new reports finds that the car will actually be called the LP560-4.

According to tuningnews.net, 560 represents the cars output — 560 PS, which is about 552 horsepower — and the 4 refers the car's permanent all-wheel drive system. It remains unclear if the Murcielago will gain a 4 at the end of its nameplate since it too uses all-wheel drive.

As earlier reported, the Gallardo will use a 5.2L V10 rather than the current car's 5.0L unit.

Info from WCF...

Lamborghini have released intimate details of their new super-focused Gallardo LP560-4 which is being shown at the Geneva International Motor Show. The heat-seeking Lambo uses a 5.2-litre V10 bomber whose power figures point to future performance models in the Volkswagen Group. Never mind that; it’s still too far up ahead. For today the Gallardo LP560-4 uses a dry-sump V10 angled at 90 degrees for its duties. Compression ratio is 12.5:1. The thing spews out 412kW (560ps), attained at a dizzy 8000rpm. Torque is pegged at 540Nm. Sprint times read like 3.7 seconds 0 – 100 km/h, 11.8 seconds 0 – 200km/h and top speed is 325km/h. Gallardo has truly lost its respect for big brother Murciélago.

Along with its optional 6-speed e-gear sequential gearbox which can be changed via paddleshift stalks, LP560-4 uses a 4WD Viscous Traction system to plant power on the road via Pirelli Pzero 235/35 ZR 19 – 295/30 ZR 19 front and rear tyres, plus a rear diff with 45 percent limited slip. That it is lighter helps a great deal as well. It is said that gear changes now happen 40 percent quicker than ever. Fuel is directly injected into the combustion chamber which improves efficiency across the whole engine speed range. The 90 litre fuel tank is good for an average consumption figure of 14 litres per 100km.

LP560-4 uses aluminium double wishbones, and its springs and shocks adjusted tighter for much better grip, resulting in a car quite highly strung, but yet very drivable under everyday conditions. And for those conditions where other cars on the road don’t quite judge its velocity well enough, Lambo has fitted Brembo brakes that boast four calipers at the rear. Carbon ceramic brakes are available as an extra.

Lamborghini’s have now entered the new century, therefore creature comforts previously unheard of in a Lambo can be found. Such goodies include the Multimedia System with USB connector, LED daytime running lights, Bluetooth and TV system. The cars can be personalized to suit individuals such that no two are exactly the same, a very crucial consideration at this level of buyer.
