The Next Infiniti G35? New Coupe Concept to Make Debut at Detroit's Auto Show
Date Posted 11-10-2005

DETROIT — Infiniti will show off a "major redesign" of the 2007 G35 sedan at the New York auto show and a concept coupe at January's Detroit auto show, Inside Line has learned.

The Japan-designed concept coupe, which company insiders are simply calling the "Infiniti concept," may hint at the 2007 G35 coupe. A source said the coupe concept would not have a V8 engine.

The midsize G35 is considered a brand-defining product for Infiniti, competing as it does against such global stalwarts as the BMW 5 Series.

They have to show it at Detroit if they want some real attention and it must be damn good if Nissan kept a concept laying around just so it could be shown at detroit when the production model is already developed and on schedule to be shown in NY.

Can still remember the first g35 coupe concept to be shown and it was amazing, this thing must be something else to end up in two shows for the same intro...

I love the fact that all these articles compare the g35 to the 5 series and GS

Seems to me that in this segment, entry level luxury, the 6 or 7 year design cycle has to go. Everyone will have to go the BMW route and add stuff all the time. Infiniti will have to get this new G35 out soon, cause the current one will just wither away (even with the 05 update).

The next time around, I think we'll see the G for 5-6 years. The G debuted 1.5 years in Japan before we saw it here. Globally, the G's been around for 6 years. It seems like this is a correction of sorts, and that the G will come out at the same time globally this time.

I really want the next gen G35 to be my next car for sure now. I'm sorry Acura, but your car designs aren't as hot aside from the Sports4 concept aren't that intriguing to me. The problem with the current G35 sedan is the rear end isn't as aggressive or as nice as the coupe rear end. The next gen sedan needs dual exhausts like the coupe.

I wouldnt say the current g35 would "wither away". It's still selling well and is not outdated styling-wise or technology-wise. This is more so for the coupe than the sedan. I just think it would be a plus for infiniti to release a new one to beat the new competition.

Well, if you want to get technical... the engine doesn't really need dual exhaust.

(The coupe just has a Y-pipe dual exhaust right?)

If i'm wrong, than sorry.

Although I do agree. Appearance wise, dual exhaust > single

I agree 100%. The sedan's rear is the weakest area design wise, IMO. The coupe's rear is beautiful, and the two pipes really finish the look. Hopefully that's corrected with this new gen vehicle.

yes they use Y pipe.. but the Y pipe is not the same as CL/TL y pipe.

VQ35DE has 2 cats coming down from header, which means it could be a true dual setup if u want it to be.

where J serie (CL/TL) and s2000 have 1 cat and Split into 2 (y pipe).. .. so techincally single exhausts would be ideal...

but yah... fuck does it mean i have to trade in my car again?????? AHHHHH G35 here i come AGAIN....

What is the chance that we'll see AWD as an option on the next gen G35 coupe? I would love for this so that I can drive the next gen coupe in the snow and not have store it for winters and driving the TSX.

Very few coupes offer it so there's no incentive for Infiniti to do so.

Get yourself a set of winter tires and you'll be fine. If the conditions are that bad that you can't drive the coupe with winter tires, you shouldn't be driving, period.

I disagree with biker. If you take out the G's power, you kill the appeal.
You might as well try to sell a Lincoln Zephyr.

I don't see any chance of that happening. The GTR will be permanent AWD, and will be an Infiniti. The G will probably remain RWD so it doesn't step on the GTR's toes. Try snow tires.

According to the forum members, the article above talks about a GT-R-based 3.7L engine making around 340HP at 6500 rpm

Don't like it, looks like they were trying to apply other car styling elements to the G35 rather than making another unique g35 design. The rear looks like crap.

It looks great. They basically took the current design and added some flares and curves to it. Exactly what I expected. Evolutionary with the same basic characteristics since the current model has been so successful.

I think it looks great. And evolutionary was the way to go. The G has been a runaway success for Infiniti... why mess with it. They took what make it successfull (stance, proportion), and made it more aggressive. The front looks awesome (the M's face taken to the next level), while the rear looks race inspired (those huge rear vents aren't unlike those found on the Enzo). A more hardcore look over all. And with a 3.7L V6 (VQ, I presume) making 340HP, it'll be able to back those looks up! My only wishes is that this overall look makes it to the sedan, the interior is changed and upgraded to no lower than M levels, and the sedan gets the same output engine (though it'll probably get a slightly detuned version around 325HP, which is still way more than the IS).

I am guessing the sedan will make less than 325HP. Maybe closer to 310. Think of the 306HP from Lexus as the benchmark to beat, being in Infiniti's shoes. The 330-340HP rumored for the coupe are probably there due to the fact that the Coupe IS350 will probably make more than 306HP. That's my guess at least.

I am also guessing that there will be a V8 G-xx with this new generation. The rumors for a V8 Nissan Zxxx are too strong to ignore. I would not be surpirsed if the rumored V8 to be used in the next GT-R (US Spec) would also be used in the G coupe. The rumors call for 400HP which makes a V8 Gxx go head to head with the next generation M3 from a power standpoint at least.

The next thought then is: will there be a V8 Lexus IS? I say yes to that also.

Think thats too much power to continue only having one engine variant. Hopefully the car is lux'ed out so a low power/$ version would be desirable also just based off the quality of components/style. Typical Infiniti/Nissan fashion seems to be putting the money for luxury into the engine money pool.

Is that an Infiniti badge in front and Nissan on the rear of that car?

Not surprised - HP is Nissan's way to stay ahead of the game. The IS350 boys won't be able to brag about HP a year from now.

I would not be surprised if we saw a smaller V6 making around 225HP or so. Following the Lexus IS strategy exactly (which of course is copycatted by BMW and MB).

And now that I was close to a G35-6MT purchase, we have this news. Now I gotta wait for a year. Then when a year will pass, I'll be saying, "wait another year for the bugs to be worked out". Then, you say "next year they will have a refresh with possibly more power, you have got to wait for that". Then "this is the last year and now we know what the next gen. will look like".

God Damn!

It's gotta be more than 225 - that's a bit too close to the 215HP of the 325. And an IS300 with 245HP is probably right around the corner.

I dont know about an IS300. True there is a big gap between the 204HP and the 306HP but is there a need for yet another engine in there? Will it justify the cost? Remember that BMW has the 3.0L as the largest engine available since the introduction of the new gen. 3er, so the strategies between Lexus and BMW do not match exactly. Maybe Lexus sees the IS350 as the direct competitor to the 330i. Then there would not be a need for an IS300.

We'll see...
