Honda regains 2nd place among Japan's automakers

Fueled by strong demand for its small and fuel-efficient cars, Honda Motor Co. has overtaken Nissan Motor Co. to regain second place among Japan's automakers.

Honda built 1.79 million cars and light trucks worldwide in the first half of the Japanese fiscal year, up 6 percent from year-earlier levels, while Nissan's output fell to 1.52 million vehicles between April and September.

Last year, Nissan outsold Honda worldwide by close to 180,000 vehicles. This year, however, a dearth of new models has hurt Nissan's sales in most major markets, including Japan and the United States.

Nissan expects to recover its momentum before the end of the year with the launches of the Sentra and Altima sedans

Honda, meanwhile, is riding on the huge success of its new Civic compact.

"Demand has been very strong for that, and also for the Fit" subcompact, said Honda Motor America spokesman David Iida.

Time for the Accord sedan to kick some Altima ass in 08. Thats a tall order though with the new Camry looking mighty impressive, and the Altima said to be available in coupe and cab versions, but I'm sure HMC will deliver.

Don't get too comfortable, these two have switched 2nd and 3rd place in the past also. I remember a few years ago Nissan reclaimed the #2 spot from Honda.

Very big weakness, I agree. Their trans suck ass lint and limit the expected ownership lifetime of their vehicles.

Toyoat's #2 in the world in volume (they'll be #1 soon), so they're definitely #1 in Japan.

Too bad Honda sales revenues < Honda Interest Rate Swap losses.

More on topic, Nissan is not exactly known for their line of fuel efficient cars. So in a world in which gas prices are skyrocketing (although currently in a relative free fall stateside), I can see where Honda would have some success here.

Lightbulb Toyota

I have read that Toyota sells more than Honda & Nissan combined ... @ least in Japan but I suspect worldwide as well. Which makes sense since they have a lot more models & even a 3rd division w/ Scion.

It would be nice if Honda made a few more models: Acura coupe & flagship; Honda true SUV/truck etc etc
