Discontinued in 2022, the Honda Insight Is Back in 2026 as a Crossover SUV - autoevolution
The Japanese automaker has recently decided to officially announce that it will import home to Japan two models produced in the United States: the high-performance Acura Integra Type S compact liftback sedan, along with the premium adventure-oriented Honda Passport TrailSport Elite mid-size crossover SUV.
The introductions come hot on the heels of the new Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's newly established certification system for American-made vehicles, aiming to expand the lineup with popular models produced in the US. They are both made by Honda Development & Manufacturing of America and were shown in Japan at Tokyo Auto Salon 2026 and Osaka Auto Messe 2026.
The rumor mill already knew about these two introductions – but now Honda caught us by surprise with help from a nameplate revival. As it turns out, the Honda Insight moniker is coming back to Japan – the hybrid car that arrived as a two-door, two-seat liftback in 1999 and turned into a four-door liftback and then a regular sedan for the other two iterations before getting the axe in 2022.
Well, the fourth-generation Honda Insight was just shown, and it’s not like we know it. Instead, the all-new Honda Insight is now a coupe-style crossover SUV. More so, it’s not a hybrid anymore but fully electric. The surprising return is actually a rebranding – the Insight reinvented as an electric crossover is apparently based on the China-made Honda e:NS2
The edgy styling has direct similarities with the e:NS2, a battery-electric crossover launched in 2024 by the Dongfeng Honda joint venture. The interior is also the same, making way for speculations that Honda is importing the model from China to Japan to try and occupy production capacity, as things aren’t going quite according to plan in the world’s largest automotive market
Anyway, the information officially provided by Honda states the all-new Insight will be released this spring and advance reservations will be possible starting March 19. The company quotes a driving range of about 500 km (311 miles) according to the Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Cycle, and the launch color is a new Aqua Topaz Metallic II shade
Inside, the little SUV has high-quality soft padding materials, wireless chargers, a walk-through space between the driver and front passenger, rear seats with reclining function, an aroma diffuser function, an intelligent heating system that “enables coordinated operation of the seat, steering wheel, and interior heaters, automatically detects whether rear seat occupants are present and features an auto mode that optimizes air conditioning output and power consumption.”
