Ferrari: F430 news **SP1 News (page 12)**
Ferraris entry-level 360 Modena is about to undergo a technical redesign, which is previewed for the very first time in this set of spy pictures. The pictures have been taken most recently in the vicinity of Ferraris Maranello development headquarters and at the companys own Fiorano racetrack.
Although still selling well (months-long waiting lists are proof of this), Ferrari is taking the initiative and updating the 360 Modena in 2004, in order to fight off increasing competition, which could be imposed by the new Lamborghini Gallardo, or the McLaren-Mercedes SLR, or just obsolescence over the course of time.
Visually, only the mildest of changes will be applied to one of Pininfarinas all-time classics: new headlights mark the most significant change from the current car. Black carriers replace the formerly body-colored units of the current car with their three neighboring round projector-style units. The rounded overall shape is maintained, but the new units feature a vertically tapered inner shape and are also sectioned horizontally, with single projector-style main beams in the upper section, and position lights and side indicators in a neighboring position in the lower section.
Spoked wheels from the 360 Challenge Stradale complement the stylistic makeover. They not only offer a fresh new look but also provide increased mechanical stiffness at a reduced weight.
The major changes take place under the skin: Dubbed the Ferrari 400 Modena, the facelifted 360 uses a heavily modified engine with increased bore and stroke bringing total displacement from 3.6 to 4.0 liters and power presumably up to 400 or 420 hp (thus, matching the acclaimed 360 Challenge Stradale).
A replacement for the Modena, called the 420 Monza, is expected in 2005-06 and likely will use a 4.2-liter version of this engine. Until then, the updated 400 Modena will defend Ferrari. The bespoke modifications are expected for spring 2004 and equally apply for the closed-roof standard model and the open-top Spider.

Dear 001,
The Ferrari 360 replacement is evolution not revolution.
The fabulous Ferrari 360 Modena, which is due for some type of upgrade in late 2004 or early 2005 will be more an evolution of the current 2003 car, rather than a completely new machine. The Italians have resisted the urge to experiment (the late 348's contained some 355 systems, likewise the 355's experimental F1 box went into the 360's).
Although styling will be limited to new front and rear bumper changes, some side-skirt redesign, different alloy wheels and a slightly revised interior - the sheet metal work will probably remain untouched, something that cannot be said for the engine and gearbox.
Continental dealers tell me that a version of the 4.2-litre V8 motor in the Enzo is probably going into the 360, which insiders suggest may be renamed the 362M. Developing about 450bhp, the unit will propel the car from 0-60 in under 4 seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 200 mph (solely to match the Lamborghini's Gallardo and Porsche 911 Turbo). This will be coupled to a version of the Enzo's gearbox too, suggesting that Ferrari is introducing some serious F1 technology into their cars.
I have had it confirmed that a GTS version (removable roof panel, ala Magnum PI) will not be produced, not for any engineering reasons, simply because it doesn't't look good enough! Don't you just love Ferrari?
Expect prices to rise 1.5% in the process.
Buon Natale,
Geno

Evolving 360: Ferrari testing heavily reworked version of 360 Modena - - - By GREG KABLE - - Source: Autoweek
Ferrari is road testing a heavily reworked version of the 360 Modena, dubbed the 430 Modena.
Likely to appear for the first time at next year’s Geneva motor show, the two-seater will forego the 3.6-liter V8 used in the existing car for an engine derived from the 4.2-liter V8 used in the Maserati Coupe/Spyder and Quattroporte.
AutoWeek sources say the new powerplant’s capacity of about 4.3 liters will produce 480 hp, up from the 360’s 400 hp, and much closer to the 500-hp 5.0-liter V10 in competitor Lamborghini’s Gallardo. Changes to the Maserati engine include a flat crank, lighter internals and a revised air inlet manifold—all aimed at allowing it to rev close to 9000 rpm.

I would really want to see the dyno on that engine. With 9000rpm redline the 480hp will probably be achieved at 8000rpm.
Without a turbo the peak torque will probably move up in the rpms as well.

Has New 360 Gone To Blazes? - - - Source: AutoExpress
It was all hands to the pump at Ferrari's top-secret research and development facility at Maranello, Italy, when the building caught fire. Although some reports claim virtually nothing was lost "except a few 612 Scaglietti-badged raincoats", Auto Express has learned the area affected contained a number of priceless prototypes, as well as the office of Dario Benuzzi, the company's top test driver.
With work on the 612 finished, Benuzzi is said to be concentrating on a 360 replacement. Powered by a 4.2-litre V8, the car will feature an all-new roof system inspired by the Fioravante Alfa concept that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in 2001. Ferrari is interested in a metal-roofed convertible because of their improved refinement and aerodynamics. Traditional Mercedes SLK-style tops are heavy and can alter a vehicle's centre of gravity, depending on if they are open or closed. The newcomer, expected next year, gets around this with hi-tech light materials, and a unique 'single-panel' top.

These power wars are incredible....When will it end?
I think it would be more ballsy at this point to make the cars lighter, thus making a better handling car. And not 5 lbs lighter, let's get to 2500lbs or so..

I agree. But I think this car is more of an evolution of the current car, with a face lift and mechanical upgrades, rather an a radical redesign. Still, it looks good to me. Enough to know it's not the 360 but no so much you don't know what it's replacing.

Scaglietti Restyle For 360 - - By Chris Thorp - - Source: Autoexpress
The controversy over the design of the 612 Scaglietti is still rumbling on, but Ferrari fans had better get used to it - because Auto Express magazine can reveal the bold styling is set to spread.
The mag's exclusive spy shots give the clearest glimpse yet of the replacement for the 360 Modena. And under the plastic disguise are striking headlamps and a daring new look similar to that of its big brother, the 612. Seen in the mag outside the Maranello factory in Italy, the newcomer has kept the overall shape of its predecessor, but is likely to have more dramatic detailing.
As well as the new headlights, the front will be dominated by reshaped air intakes and a more pointed nose. The rear disguise didn't fool our spies, either, as insiders have told us it will get a more muscular shape than that of the 360. Styling house Pininfarina has kept the trademark round rear lamps, while the bulge between them is thought to hide a spoiler which only pops up at speed. A similar hump was seen on the original Enzo prototype.
Under the glass engine cover is a mighty 4.2-litre V8 powerplant, which will deliver 450bhp and give the Ferrari the performance it needs to take on Lamborghini's V10 Gallardo. While the logical name for the 360M's replacement is the 420M (after the engine size), there's some confusion as Ferrari has recently trademarked 430M.
Whatever it's called, the coupé version of the new Ferrari is expected to debut early in 2005, with first deliveries next summer. A year later, the convertible Spider will go on sale, and it's tipped to feature a retractable metal hard-top - a first for Ferrari.
