Sales at Ford and G.M. in December Fall More Than 31%
By NICK BUNKLEY
Published: January 5, 2009
DETROIT — Vehicle sales in the United States dropped 32.4 percent at the Ford Motor Company and 31.4 percent at General Motors in December from the month a year ago, the automakers said Monday, and their rivals were expected to report even bleaker numbers later in the afternoon.
The decline means that for all of 2008, Ford’s sales fell 20.7 percent, a difference of more than 500,000 vehicles, while G.M.’s sales were down 22.9 percent, a drop of nearly 900,000.
G.M., which received a $4 billion loan from the federal government at the end of December to help it remain solvent, cut its production forecast for the first quarter by another 180,000 vehicles, to a level 53 percent lower than the same period of 2008.
Other major automakers, including foreign and domestic brands, are expected to say that their sales fell at least 35 percent in December, according to analysts’ forecasts. The most dismal reports will likely come from Chrysler, which also received a $4 billion loan last month, and Nissan.
Smaller carmakers fared slightly better. Volkswagen sales fell 14 percent last month and 3.2 percent for the full year, while Mercedes said sales fell 23.5 percent in December and 11.2 percent for the year.
Over all, analysts say 2008 will end up as the worst year for selling cars and trucks since 1992. But that comparison does not capture how quickly business deteriorated in recent months, as credit markets tightened and consumer confidence sank.
Plummeting demand for vehicles caused Toyota last month to project its first full-year operating loss in 70 years, showing that the industry’s woes extend far beyond Detroit.
George Pipas, Ford’s chief sales analyst, projected total industry sales for 2008 of about 13.5 million, a full 3 million fewer than in 2007. Not since 1974, when an oil embargo against the United States caused the price of oil to quadruple, has the market collapsed that much in a single year, he said.
Analysts said December’s sales rate would probably be worse than even the 26-year lows reached in October and November.
“When you adjust it for population, this is something that we really haven’t seen since the 1960s,” Erich Merkle, an automotive analyst in Grand Rapids, Mich., with the consulting firm Crowe Horwath, said. “This is a really horrible cycle in terms of auto sales.”
There were some modest bright spots for Ford. The company estimated that its market share increased to 14.6 percent in December, up 0.7 of a point from a year ago. It marks the first time in 11 years that Ford’s market share rose, on a year-over-year basis, for three consecutive months.
In addition, the Ford F-series pickup appears to have maintained its position as the best-selling model in the United States for a 27th consecutive year, despite surging demand for small cars such as the Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla. Ford began selling a redesigned version of the F-series this fall.

The U.S. auto industry hasn't experienced a worse year of sales in recent memory, so it's fitting that 2008 should close with December sales data that's no better than the previous disappointing months.
The only green you'll see below is next to MINI, which beat out December 2007 sales by only four vehicles. Every other automaker and its brands sold fewer cars this past month than the year prior.
Santa apparently wasn't putting Accords and Camrys under anyone's tree, as Toyota and Honda sales fell sharply, off 36.7% and 34.7%, respectively. General Motors (-31.4%) and Ford Motor Company (-32.4%) fared about the same, but the Chrysler Group took an unprecedented hit on the chin for a full-line automaker. It's December 2008 sales were down a full 53% versus last year. Chrysler brand sales alone were down an incredible 59.8% compared to 12/07. This means that HUMMER, for the first time in a long time, was not this month's Biggest Loser, managing to unload enough H3s to see sales fall by "only" 59.3%.
Props are also awarded to Audi (-9.3%), Lincoln (-10%), Subaru (-7.7%) and Volkswagen (-14.4%) who finished the year strong... well, as strong as could be expected.

Thanks.
Mini and Subaru at least did well. Honda didnt too bad for the year probably because of all the civics they sold over the summer. Audi is doing a good job for the year as well probably due to the new designs. WV is also down by very little. Hummer and Saab need to be sold.
