love it, and Cadillac figured out how to add LED strips to the headlights without looking like Audi knock offs.

Oh lawdy. Do Want V. And I'm such a sucker for suede..... ahhhhh. That looks so sexy that I'd lick the damn paint.

Hood bulges induce pants buldges, especially when there's a big supercharger sitting underneath

The CTS wagon is the best look variant of the CTS; the roofline/greenhouse on the sedan is too truncated (it's a bit better on the coupe).

The smaller/sleeker CTS grill (w/ the mesh) on the photos that yumcha posted is so much better than the standard CTS grill.

I like the Vagon. If it had been available at the time I purchased my sedan, I may have purchased that instead. There are a bunch of guys on the V forum who are buying the Vagon in 6MT trim.

6MT + 556 hp + room to cart family=massive win

2011 Cadillac CTS-V Coupe
Middling Cabin, Magnificent Handling, Marvelous Car

Cadillac has never made anything like the CTS-V Coupe, a $63,000 monster that's half hedonist and half hot-rod. Not only that, Cadillac's never fought in this part of the market before. The brand had monster engines back in its early days, but they were always pulling monster barges that wallowed as much as, well, barges. Here we have a coupe promising to cut up the roads like one of those German knives, but we've heard that refrain so many times before. This time, however, it might be true.

If this were 10 years ago, we'd be calling this the Cadillac Eldorado something-or-other. But it isn't and the Eldorado might as well be a Franklin Mint pewter collectable by now. And huzzah for that. The grand tourer with the mythic name was probably the most consistent bright spot in the Cadillac line, but nevertheless, the final version had come down quite a bit from its life at the big-bore top. 30 years ago it was Boss Hog with steer horns for hood ornaments and celebrities in convertibles that stretched back into yesterday. By 2002 the Eldorado ETC was prescription medication for Mary Kay saleswomen and real estate agents who had discount cards for Denny's.

The following year the CTS was released, a shovel that the brand would use to pick up the pieces of its history. With the CTS-V Coupe, though, Cadillac has built a crowbar with the sole aim of prying open your minds.

It starts up front: a power bulge set among creases carved by a stiletto and angling downward into the slash of stacked headlights. The jutting, angled shield of a grille points down at the central thrust of a bumper that spears its way into the future and finishes with a lipped skirt that drops so low to the ground it might as well say, "There's nothing to see here."

It's as muscled as it is angled, all the way back to the windshield. The impression is that of the upper half of a Mr. Olympia, triceps and deltoids and trapezoids stacked atop one another, but each one as independent as it is ridiculously defined.

Move around to the side and there's welcome respite from the anger leading the way. Once the eye falls away from the bulge and side vent, the expanse is featureless, save for some chrome and a crease rising up to the rear. The visuals don't pop again until you get to the flipping-the-bird spoiler-cum-taillight hanging off the rear deck.

It's the rear that has come in for the most scrutiny, for obvious reasons. The handsome proportions that run all the way to the ends of the doors go all hyena on us at the rear quarter panels, so instead of Mr. Olympia we get terrific strength up top and then "Oh... what happened here?" The highly raked rear glass means the shoulder rises that much higher, and with 2 inches lopped off the rear compared to the sedan, it also rises more quickly. That's left a blank expanse of metal above the rear wheels that instantly registers as girth. We think if there were another crease, perhaps curved above the rear wheel like an arch, it would help avert a seemingly unavoidable conclusion: "That's a big butt."

Not that there'll be much chance to get a side-on view, mainly due to 2 things: the magnetoreological suspension that allows you to take full advantage of 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet from the 6.2-liter LSA V8. Perhaps better than a technical description of how good the handling is, we'll tell you this: We drove 600 miles round trip to a place with hills and esses, our only desire being to flex all those fast-twitch muscles. And it was worth every mile and drop of gas.

See, Cadillac didn't just make a big, fast coupe, and they didn't even make a sporting coupe – they made a proper, bona fide, sports coupe. The only reason we don't call it a sports car is because it weighs nearly two tons and makes a deep, overt nod toward luxury, the same reasons, in fact, that we don't call a Bentley Continental GT a sports car.

General Motors' ionized handling innovations have been well tested and sorted in gunners like the Corvette, and even with the extra weight they lose nothing in the performance here. Let your eyes lead the way and turn the Alcantara-shod steering wheel to follow. That's how every turn is handled, an additional testament to steering that is plenty precise enough to be turned and set, not sawed at, at the same time as it still feels like a Cadillac around town.

The Michelin Pilot Sport 2s on 19-inch wheels have also proved their grip on numerous 10-tenths sports cars, and aren't any worse off for supporting the Cadillac's weight. We got the feeling we'd burn through them in short order, but with great grip – and great urges to mash the throttle – comes great tire wear. They do, though, also come with noticeable tire noise if the road surface is less than porcelain.

15-inch rotors up front could have been forged by the God of War, and will slow any advance with an alacrity that borders on the uncomfortable, should you choose. But if you're doing your job right it will rarely come to that. Put the car in Sport, keep the revs up and the engine doesn't have to do too much grunt work. A considered line through a snaking stretch will be rewarded with, "Were we really going that fast?" speeds and the constant need to remind yourself, "This is a Cadillac, right?" It's an unqualified hoot. And the last time we thought that about a Cadillac was in our grandfather's early '70's Eldorado convertible, but for very different reasons...

The only quibbles are found inside, and we will only harp on 1 of them. The interior materials, one of the quibbles, we'll let slide for now because we've already been told by Cadillac that in two years there'll be a revolution on the inside. It isn't bad, but it's luxurious for a car that costs half as much – the leather only looks like leather at night, never feels like leather, and the Recaros look like leather but feel like wood. It led to us thinking of the sun as "The ugly light." The wood is nice at all times of day, though, and the design is long-haul comfy. And at night the cabin is badass. With high beltlines and black everywhere, it's not like being in the Bat Cave, it's like being inside a real bat. With a radio.

However, the automatic transmission needs to be replaced as soon as possible. Though the beauty queen we've photographed for this review features the standard six-speed manual transmission, the car we actually lived with for a week came with the optional 6-speed automatic. As we've come to accept modern Cadillacs with massive gumption, we understand why automatics are the preferred gearboxes. These cars are, after all, Cadillacs. But for heaven's sake equip it with an auto 'box that's as great as the rest of the package. In Sport mode you get the kind of pep you want attached to a 556-horsepower engine, but the frenetic overcomes the luxury and that's an unfair tradeoff. Even when you handle the shifting yourself there's a frustrating gap in the delivery, which is probably only noticeable because you're so excited about how the car feels and sounds and what you want it to do. But Cadillac created that excitement, and it's unconstitutional for them to cheat us out of it.

Even with that, we wouldn't say stay away from the auto. Buyers will probably spend most of their time cruising, and the slusher is perfectly capable during those leisurely runs. It's only that any buyer with 65 grand to spend on a CTS-V Coupe has probably been in other high-performance coupes and will know what he's missing. If your'e worried just stick with the standard 6-speed.

But we get it: The brand's revolution isn't complete. Let's remember how far Cadillac has come, and not necessarily in a good way. The 1st Range Rover debuted In 1970 and cost about $4,000 at the time. It was for farmers and people who got dirty. Its cabin was covered in vinyl and rubber so folks could hose it down. That same year, a Fleetwood Sixty Special Brougham cost more than $7,000 and offered more than 16 different combinations of cloth and leather interior.

Come to 2011 and the most expensive Cadillac doesn't cost as much as a base Range Rover, and the car leading the crest-and-wreath charge isn't fighting in the top segment, but in the trenches with the 3 Series and 5 Series. If you had told an Eldorado owner in 1970 that one day his brand's best car would be duking it out with the great, great grandkid of the BMW 2002, he'd have laughed. And then shot you for being un-American.

But that's where we are, and automatic or not, we don't advise staying away from the CTS-V Coupe. In fact, get as close as you can to it, and then in it, and then drive off with all available haste. It's not only a fabulous sports tourer – certainly 1 of the best on the roads – but it is F-U-N. And it's not hard to figure out why. Blend massive power with glee-inducing handling, wrap it in a polarizing exterior design, throw in a cabin that needs a bit more love and sell it all for peanuts, and that, friends, is a Nissan GT-R with a Cadillac badge.

Yes, that's what we said. It might not be great at everything just yet (like leather and plastics), but it's certainly great enough. The next go-round could hit the luxury sports coupe bulls-eye and finally be a competitor for the Europeans without a single caveat. We've been hearing and disbelieving that for more years than we can remember, but no more. Cadillac, you have our attention.

I am really looking forward to seeing that ... It'll remove the last reason anyone would discount the CTS-V besides looks (which is subjective)

The 2nd gen CTS is quite the improvement over the 1st gen, but I'm expecting the 3rd gen to be one that will break the mold.

Aside from improving the interior and a few other weak spots, the biggest improvement will be making the 3rd gen CTS a little bigger to really go head to head against the 5 Series andf E Class (the lack of rear seat leg room really hurts the CTS).

Making it larger/longer would also improve the exterior design; currently, the wedge shaped design seems truncated, resulting in the overly fat arse and not so sleek greenhouse.

Cadillac should really adopt a lot of the design elements from the Converj concept for the next CTS coupe b/c it is absolutely gorgeous.

As much as I hate the idea of this, it makes sense since the ATS will be coming out to compete with the 3 Series and C Class.

the CTS is a pretty good sized vehicle now.

The ATS can't get here soon enough IMO.

I actually didn't read much of the article but my friend told me about it.

But he's biased anyways being an M3 owner...

Still, I think this is a great step for Cadillac.

Next CTS is reportedly scheduled for 2013. Scuttlebutt is that it's supposed to keep its V8 option. We'll see....

I wouldn't want an 6-cylinder M3, either. :thumbsdow

Ideally I would love to keep my M3 and add the new Camaro Z28 (CTS-V engine) to the garage.

Post 2013 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Wagon

Press release...

• Two-piece front brake rotors
• Available red Brembo brake calipers
• Exterior color: Glacier Blue Metallic

2013 CADILLAC CTS-V WAGON BLENDS VERSATILITY WITH HIGH-PERFORMANCE

The CTS-V Wagon combines the performance and luxury of the landmark CTS-V Sport Sedan with the dramatic design of the CTS Wagon. The combination makes for a unique, high-performance Cadillac that hauls in every sense of the word.

Like the Sedan model that established the CTS-V legacy, the V-Series Wagon is powered by a supercharged 6.2L V-8 that delivers 556 horsepower (415 kW) and is backed by either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic. A collection of technical and performance elements complement the powertrain, including Magnetic Ride Control, Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 performance tires mounted on 19-inch forged aluminum wheels.

A unique grille that doubles front-end airflow to help enable its high-performance capabilities is one of the V-Series’ distinguishing features, along with an aggressive front fascia and raised center section of the aluminum hood that provides clearance for the supercharger.

For 2013, the CTS-V family adds new, two-piece front brake rotors and Glacier Blue Metallic exterior color. The two-piece rotors are now standard, offering greater resistance to warping and potentially longer rotor life, as well as reduced weight. The design features a separate cast iron rotor brake ring mounted to an aluminum “hat” that attaches the brake assembly to the wheel hub. The hat and brake ring cool at different rates, which helps the rotor dissipate heat more effectively. This racing-style disc design enhances braking performance under track operating conditions.

CTS-V Wagon design

The CTS-V Wagon incorporates a number of unique cues that blend function with aesthetics. The dihedral Cadillac grille, for example, is larger to enable more air intake and features a satin finish, while the raised hood encompasses the supercharged engine beneath it. The front and rear fascias, as well as a rear spoiler that houses the center high-mounted stop lamp, are specific to the car, as are its standard 19-inch wheels.

The V-Series Wagon is essentially the same size as the CTS-V Sedan on the outside, but its unique cargo compartment nearly doubles carrying capacity, with 25.4 cubic feet (720 liters) of space behind the rear seats; and 58 cubic feet (1,644 liters) with the rear seat folded.

Additional exterior features include:

• High-intensity discharge headlamps with Adaptive Forward Lighting System are standard
• Fog lamps are standard
• Power liftgate is standard
• Heated and power-adjustable outside mirrors are standard
• Rainsense automatic windshield wipers are standard
• Nineteen-inch painted aluminum wheels are standard
• Nineteen-inch high-polished aluminum wheels are optional
• Nineteen-inch aluminum wheels with satin graphite finish are optional
• Exterior colors: Radiant Silver Metallic, Black Raven, Black Diamond Tricoat, Crystal Red Tintcoat, White Diamond Tricoat, Thunder Gray ChromaFlair, Opulent Blue Metallic and Glacier Blue Metallic.

CTS-V Wagon interior

The interior of the CTS-V Wagon features streamlined instrumentation, LED lighting and hand-cut-and-sewn accents. It includes performance seats featuring perforated sueded microfiber inserts designed to hold the driver and front passenger in place during cornering. Recaro performance driving seats are optional and provide excellent support during performance driving. These 14-way adjustable performance seats include pneumatic bolster controls in the seat cushions and backrests.

Complementing the performance seating are a thick steering wheel and a gauge package designed for easy, at-a-glance reference during performance driving. Large instruments have bold readouts, including an LED-lit “tracer” function in the tachometer that flashes as the engine nears the red line. The gauge layout includes a boost gauge and a lateral acceleration display.

Obsidian Black accents grace the center stack, console, steering wheel and door panels. The production steering wheel and shifter are available in Alcantara, providing the luxurious character of suede.

Additional features include:

• Audio system with navigation, including AM/FM stereo, CD/DVD player, MP3 playback, Bose Surround Sound with 10 speakers, 40-gig hard drive and USB with audio connectivity, is standard
• Bluetooth phone connectivity is standard
• Keyless entry and keyless start features are standard
• Ambient lighting package is standard
• Ultrasonic rear park assist is standard
• Rearview camera system is standard
• Adaptive remote vehicle start is standard
• Heated front bucket seats with power eight-way driver and passenger adjustment, articulating head restraints and driver memory feature are standard on all trim levels
• Recaro performance seats are optional and include heated/cooled feature and leather trim with microfiber suede inserts
• Leather-trimmed steering wheel with auxiliary controls is standard and includes paddle-shift controls when the vehicle is equipped with the automatic transmission
• Steering wheel with microfiber-trimmed rim is available and is packaged with microfiber-trimmed shift knob and Recaro performance seats.
• Power sunroof is available
• Interior color and trim choices include: Ebony seats with Ebony microfiber suede inserts and Light Titanium seats with Light Titanium microfiber suede inserts.

Supercharged performance

The CTS-V Wagon’s 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine is rated at 556 horsepower (415 kW) and 551 lb.-ft. of torque (747 Nm). It is the most powerful engine in Cadillac’s history.

The engine features an intercooled Eaton Twin Vortices Series™ (TVS™) supercharger, which employs twin four-lobe rotors that are twisted 160 degrees. Typical superchargers feature three lobes twisted 60 degrees. The fourth lobe and greater helix profile, when combined with unique air inlet and outlet ports, create smoother, more efficient airflow into the engine. In addition to improved overall efficiency, this supercharger has superior noise and vibration characteristics compared to more ordinary designs.

A pair of six-speed transmissions is offered in the CTS-V Wagon – a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual with a dual-disc clutch and a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted shift controls. The steering wheel-mounted controls require no shift lever movement and allow immediate tap up/tap down gear selection. Performance Algorithm Shifting provides the automotive transmission with a performance-oriented shift pattern during sustained high-performance driving. As with many Cadillac models, the driver needs only to slide the shifter into the manual “gate” to put the transmission into a performance mode.

Torque is channeled through the six-speed transmissions to a high-performance rear axle that features a limited-slip rear differential within a cast iron housing for greater thermal management and asymmetrical half-shafts to smoothly manage the supercharged engine’s incredible torque. The unique design includes alternately sized half-shafts that also help dynamically balance the oscillation of torque from side to side, effectively eliminating “power hop.”

CTS-V Wagon driving experience

The V-Series is designed for great road-holding performance, while maintaining the poise of a luxury car in average driving conditions. This is enabled by Cadillac’s landmark Magnetic Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension technology. It uses shocks controlled by advanced magneto-rheological technology, rather than mechanical valves, to greatly accelerate response time and precision. Electronic sensors at all four wheels literally “read the road” every millisecond, making constant adjustments to damping to create virtually instantaneous and extremely precise control of body motions.

The Magnetic Ride shocks also enable a broader range of damping control to optimize the ride and handling for all driving conditions. In the CTS-V, an extra measure of control is offered, with two selectable modes (Tour and Sport), enabling the driver to tailor the suspension for grand touring or more spirited performance driving.

The CTS-V also incorporates sophisticated braking and tire systems, in partnership with two companies renowned for high-performance technology: Brembo and Michelin. Brembo brakes are at all four corners and include powerful, six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear. Brembo brakes are at all four corners and include powerful, six-piston calipers in the front and four-piston calipers in the rear. Large, two-piece vented rotors enable strong initial braking force while optimizing heat resistance and eliminating fade. The two-piece design is lighter and offers enhanced cooling during high-performance driving.

Michelin partnered with Cadillac engineers to develop an exclusive Pilot Sport PS2 tire specifically engineered for the CTS-V Wagon. The tires support high levels of grip in track conditions, while also affording excellent performance on the road.

Additional chassis and suspension features include:

• An independent short/long arm (SLA) front suspension system that features low-mass aluminum for the upper and lower control arms, as well as the knuckles
• A multi-link rear suspension with a fully isolated subframe
• StabiliTrak electronic chassis control system is integrated with the car’s standard four-channel ABS with the full-function traction control, as well as the hydraulic brake assist and engine control systems
• A limited-slip differential
• A 3.73 axle ratio on manual-transmission models
• A 3.23 axle ratio on automatic-transmission models
• A power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system.

CTS-V Wagon safety and crash-avoidance features

CTS-V Wagon is designed to enhance Cadillac’s reputation for providing safe occupant environments in luxury vehicles. Features include:

• Dual-stage driver front air bag
• Segment-first dual depth front passenger air bag
• Driver and front passenger side seat-mounted pelvic/thorax side air bags
• Roof-rail side curtain air bags with rollover protection technology that cover front and rear seating rows
• Front safety belt pretensioners
• Tire pressure monitoring system
• Body structure with strategically placed high-strength steel
• Active head restraints for front seat occupants
• Ultrasonic rear parking assist

Post 2013 Cadillac CTS-V Sport Sedan

Press release...

• Two-piece front brake rotors
• Available red Brembo brake calipers
• Exterior color: Glacier Blue Metallic

2013 CADILLAC CTS-V SPORT SEDAN IS ONE OF THE
WORLD’S HIGHEST-PERFORMING LUXURY SEDANS

The CTS-V Sedan was the first production four-door on street tires to break the legendary eight-minute barrier at Germany’s famed Nürburgring – a feat that established an unqualified reputation as one of the world’s highest-performing luxury sedans.

A suite of sublimely coordinated technical and performance elements, including Magnetic Ride Control, Brembo brakes and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 performance tires mounted on 19-inch forged aluminum wheels, form the foundation for the CTS-V Sedan’s exhilarating driving experience, while a supercharged 6.2L V-8 provides the thrust. It delivers 556 horsepower (415 kW) and is backed by either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic.

All CTS-V models feature a unique grille that doubles front-end airflow to help enable its high-performance capabilities, along with an aggressive front fascia and raised center section of the aluminum hood that provides clearance for the supercharger.

CTS-V Sedan design

The CTS-V Sedan exterior incorporates a number of unique cues that blend function with aesthetics.

Additional exterior features include:

• High-intensity discharge headlamps with Adaptive Forward Lighting System are standard
• Fog lamps are standard
• Heated and power-adjustable outside mirrors are standard
• Rainsense automatic windshield wipers are standard
• Nineteen-inch painted aluminum wheels are standard
• Nineteen-inch high-polished aluminum wheels are optional
• Nineteen-inch aluminum wheels with satin graphite finish are optional
• Exterior colors: Radiant Silver Metallic, Black Raven, Black Diamond Tricoat, Crystal Red Tintcoat, White Diamond Tricoat, Thunder Gray ChromaFlair, Opulent Blue Metallic and Glacier Blue Metallic.

CTS-V Sedan interior

The CTS-V Sedan interior features streamlined instrumentation, LED lighting and hand-cut-and-sewn accents.

• Leather-trimmed steering wheel with auxiliary controls is standard and includes paddle-shift controls when the vehicle is equipped with the automatic transmission
• Steering wheel with microfiber-trimmed rim is available and is packaged with microfiber-trimmed shift knob and Recaro performance seats
• Power sunroof is available
• Interior color and trim choices include: Ebony seats with Ebony microfiber suede inserts and Light Titanium seats with Light Titanium microfiber suede inserts.

Supercharged performance

The CTS-V Sedan’s 6.2L supercharged V-8 engine is rated at 556 horsepower (415 kW) and 551 lb.-ft. of torque (747 Nm).

A pair of six-speed transmissions is offered in the CTS-V Sedan – a Tremec TR6060 six-speed manual with a dual-disc clutch and a Hydra-Matic 6L90 six-speed automatic with steering wheel-mounted shift controls.

CTS-V Sedan driving experience

The CTS-V Sedan also incorporates sophisticated braking and tire systems, in partnership with two companies renowned for high-performance technology: Brembo and Michelin.

Michelin partnered with Cadillac engineers to develop an exclusive Pilot Sport PS2 tire specifically engineered for the CTS-V. The tires support high levels of grip in track conditions, while also affording excellent performance on the road.

Additional chassis and suspension features include:

• An independent short/long arm (SLA) front suspension system that features low-mass aluminum for the upper and lower control arms, as well as the knuckles.

2013 CADILLAC CTS SPORT WAGON MATCHES VERSATILITY WITH STYLE

From Autoblog:
The 2014 CTS will break cover next week at the New York Auto Show, but Cadillac has released a few details of what we can expect to find under the car's hood. As we saw in some spy shots back in January, the biggest news for the midsize Caddy will be a twin-turbocharged V6 producing a whopping 420 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

This LF3 engine will be paired to a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which will help balance performance and fuel economy. We still don't know how much the 2014 CTS has grown in terms of size and weight, but General Motors says that new sedan will return 17 miles per gallon in the city and 25 mpg highway with the new engine to go with a 0-60 mile per hour time of 4.6 seconds – that means the new CTS will have the fuel economy close to the current base model sedan and acceleration not too far from the current CTS-V. General Motors also confirmed that this twin-turbo V6 will be available in the 2014 XTS this fall.

The next-generation CTS will carry over the 3.6-liter V6 from the current car (likely as a base engine) and also add the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder from the ATS.
This sounds pretty good. I can't wait to see what they'll do with the next V to top it.

I wonder if they are going to go the route of Audi with the S and RS models ... With -V being the RS, of course.

On the one hand, I am happy to hear about such a power boost. On the other hand, I am not entirely convinced that GM has the whole turbo-charged engine thing completely figured out just yet.

Supercharging, they've got that one nailed down. Turbos, not quite.

I think this new 3.6L TT engine serves as a bridge between the 3.6L 318hp engine and the CTS-V that is currently good for 556hp. The current CTS with the 3.6L 318hp engine starts at $44k. A CTS-V starts at $64k. I would imagine a ~400hp model would slot right in between those two with a starting price at about $54k.

Due to its heavier curb weight, the current CTS with 318hp is relatively slow compared to its competitors. It does 0-60mph in 6.2s and 1/4 mile in 14.7@98mph.

On the other hand, with 556hp and starting at $64k, the CTS-V is an overkill in terms of power and the pricing is far from affordable, despite the fact it's a bargain based on its performance.

So, I'm not sure if GM will improve the performance of the CTS-V by that much. I'd imagine 600hp is the target.
