C&D Comparo: 330 first, IS 350 second, G35 third, TL 4th, etc

Good comparision, the 330 squeaked by the IS 350 by a point. The IS did 0-60 in 5.1 seconds and a 13.7 1/4 mile time

The G35 and TL placed well just behind the newer competiton, which is understandable. The 5th place car was a Volvo S60R and the 6th place a Saab.

They actually got the IS to do 5.1 secs and 13.7? Thats pretty impressive.

I knew C&D would be the ones to squeeze the most out of that puppy. What did the 330i get?

They usually publish the mag two weeks or so before they put it up on their website.

BTW, what was the 1/4 mile trap speed for each car in the test?

It would be interesting to see the S60R numbers - that 6MT 300HP car is no slouch.

Lexus sure is stirring things up in the segment although they left too big a performance gap in their lineup. IS350 is at the top of the pile while the IS250 will probably end up at the bottom.

It was slooow at 6.4 to 60. The only cars to break into the 5s were the TL, G35, and IS350. The BMW had 6.0 but its numbers were from a previous test because the car became "unreliable" and couldn't finish the tests

The S60R? I don't buy it. It's a fast car. Anything over 5.8 to the 60 means the driver sucked.

I do not understand CD's philosophy concerning the 3 series. The thing failed to start when they pressed the engine start button on several tries. When it finally was running, the ABS went out during the braking run and could have killed someone (they said car went into 360 at 70mph IIRC). Before they were done, some other maintenance light came on, airbags I believe. This car was a new production car. How is that in any way acceptable. How could they consciously place the vehicle in 1st place. They should have pulled the car from the comparison with those problems or not even bothered to publish it. Very sad. Don't get me wrong, I've driven the 330's little brother 325i and it was a nice driving car--albeit a bit boring interior and overpriced--so I can only imagine the 330i being a stellar driver, but had it failed to function properly during the test drive I would never even remotely consider it.

IIRC, they said something about the heat screwing with the turbo and intercooler.

They were testing in 100+ degree weather.

No it isnt a slouch at all. Its pretty damn quick, but becuase of the high heat, the huge turbo was effected by it. The lowerst time Ive seen for the S60R is about 5.5 sec.

Ive driven many S60R's(during winter nad high heat like this) and can confidently say its plenty fast when heat is not a problem.

Let me add to that to put it in even more of a perspective. The IS350 AUTO is as fast as MANUAL SUPRA! Even more impressive now ah?

I guess those 306 ponnies may be way underrated. Maybe more like 320HP we got here. Of course we should wait for most tests to confirm.

C&D is notorious for fast times. The fastest C&D time for the Supra was 4.6 to 60. That is SIGNIFICANTLY faster than the IS350 so no, the IS350 isn't as fast as the Supra

Not sure if this will help, but the IS350's power rating is under the new SAE power ratings. So if going by the old, it was rated at around 320-325.

oh.. ok not quite as fast as the standard Supra Turbo's - which trap 106-107. But still.

Im curious to see what numbers the other mags get for the IS....

Wait'll the GS gets the 3.5L. I really didn't expect the IS, let alone in auto form, be that fast.

I may be looking at the IS as a next car. 6cyl, with an 8 cyl like power in a sedan is awesome.

I think a car that drives fast at all times will convince more test drivers than a car that handles nicely at the limits on the track.

Read any comparison where the 3-Series is involved...it is either always 1st or 2nd place. I don't think I've ever seen it in 3rd place from any comparison.

^ Yeah. That's real. I've seen it trumped by others; notably the G, but if that's the case it always comes in second place.

Exactly. There are already a couple of tests from some Canadian site as well as some guy in Cali saying that while the Lexus' VDIM (or whatever it is called) is obtrusive before the car even gets to its true limits, you can still get the tail out before it kicks in. I mean, unless you are truly autocrossing the car or something, the handling will be impressive for 95% of the people driving the car to THEIR OWN limits (not the cars' limits). So yeah, it's nice to see that the IS will haul total a$$ going straight and be tame for the m0r0ns entering the twisties...

I'm getting this for sure. The local dealer will start accepting deposits at the end of the month. Totally loaded IS350 w/ navi, Levinson sound, aero, etc expected to be around $44k...
