BMW-Z8/Z9/Z10 News **Spied (page 4)**

BMW's shock V10 roadster - -Source: Autocar

BMW could be gearing up to launch a new flagship car – the Z9. These official renderings – created by BMW’s Californian styling studio – were released at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the beginning of January.

Dubbed the California Spyder concept, BMW’s Designworks studio says the concept would have a folding carbonfibre roof and be powered by the ‘700bhp V10 engine that powers the BMW-Williams F1 car’.

At first glance these sketches might look like a flight of conceptual fancy, but BMW bosses have already admitted that a flagship project is on the drawing board. It would almost certainly be powered by the M5’s V10 and could be based on a development of the Z8’s aluminium chassis.

It’s likely that this is the supercar project that a senior BMW figure mentioned at a meeting of financial analysts last July. The official said that BMW was considering building such a car, and that it was closely monitoring the market and moves from rival car makers.

When Autocar attempted to clarify the surprise comments, a senior BMW spokesman played down the possibility of an imminent launch. He hinted that the project could be rendered pointless by the arrival of the M6 and M6 CSL.

The studio computer renderings pictured here show a big, elegant machine that takes the Z4’s ‘flame-surfaced’ looks and refines them considerably. The sketch that shows the Spyder with doors open reveals the folding hard-top under the boot lid. The smaller rendering shows how the car could look in coupé mode with the roof erected.

"folding carbonfibre roof" ? Sounds impressive and super expensive.

"and be powered by the ‘700bhp V10 engine that powers the BMW-Williams F1 car’." ? The real F1 engine? That makes a lot more than 700HP, plus who needs a 19,000 rpm puny 3 liter in this car?

OK it sounds like they only want the concept to have both of the above. The production car will be more...down to earth. Makes sense.

M6 CSL? You mean the M6 at the weight which it was supposed to have been properly released?

Considering the Williams F1 engine costs about $5 million, this is going to be an expensive ride.

I hate when marketing departments go crazy.

The Z8 was beyond overpriced, it had no huge advancements over the last M5 and was priced $50k or so higher. Yeah, it was a limited car but whatever.

It looks like a giant Z3 and has a ghetto plastic rear window.

Dude, everybody is entitled to a favorite. Fisker's design was absolutley gorgeous. My friend has one and I love it more and more every time I see/drive it.

Will you have to replace the engine every 3 hours? Give me a break, I bet only the block of the F1 engine will go in there.

Don't like it. The angles and concave lines ar too severe. Waayy to much going on with it. The only thing that's right are the proportions.

Auto Motor und Sport is reporting that BMW is in the process of developing a mid-engined roadster powered by the M5's V10 or the M3's V8. It will be priced arround 120,000 Euros.

Why use the V8? To save maybe 50lbs?

it's my understanding that the ill-fated M1 from the 80's was mid-engined

oh yea.... the side of this car in the concept pic looks quite similar to a CGT..... too similar, imo...

I think it was the M1 tht was mid-engined...

In all seriousness, I doubt the fact it was mid-engined was the reason for its failure
