BMW V3 (30/01/05)

BMW's new people carrier project. The six-seater family machine will be based on the newly launched X3 off-roader, and will pitch the firm into all-new sales territory. Latest computer images of the small people carrier, allegedly called the “V3” or “RFK” (Function Space Concept). Styling in the new 1-Series flame surfacing, this is BMWs second model to enter the MPV market. It's being developed in response to the growth in popularity of the mini-MPV market, which has yet to welcome the still-secret B-Class from BMW's arch rival Mercedes in 2005. Interior will be borrowed from the new 1-Series including the iDrive system. Company insiders are keen to point out that while the car will go head-to-head with popular mini-MPVs such as the Renault Scenic and Vauxhall Zafira, it will also make the most of the X3's highly developed platform to deliver impressive handling, as well as secure all-wheel-drive traction. What's more, it's instantly recognisable as a BMW, thanks to the influence of controversial head of design Chris Bangle. A choice of 6-Seat cabins will be offered, with greater luxury & individual passenger space, the rear seats can be folded flat to give optimum rear load space if necessary. Engine choices will follow the forthcoming 1-Series with top selling cars expected to have the 2.0 litre diesel or 2.2 litre petrol engines. Debut model to be shown at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, with production to start in 2008.

I think it looks OK, but taking BMW cues and applying them to a mini-MPV just doesn't work in the long run. I think it's the short hood that really stands out like a sore thumb.

Alright...who had the bright idea of designing a car to look like something that came out of Chris Bangle's ass?

You have to remember that it is a Euro car designed for a Euro car niche. Within that niche it fairs pretty well on looks. However it would never play in the US market, as none of its rivals do either. Horses for courses.

Never say never.

Mercedes may have scrapped the possibility for the B class to be sold here but it was mainly due to financial reasons, plus they said that they will revisit the posibility of selling it here again in the near future. This BMW offering is several years away. By then, a ton will have changed.

Honda FR-V, Open Zafira, Renault Scenic are all selling well. MB came up with the B class so naturally BMW has to answer with something.

As I said in another thread - no sliding doors a la US style minivans - that's a in Europe.

BMW V Series Spy Photos

RFK (Room functional concept)

Known by BMW's development team as "Space Travel" the RFK is BMW's interpretation of what a space functional concept vehicle should be. The RFK is also a first step in BMW defining new niches with unique products that take the next step as BMW designers attempt to shape the future. Extending the design language and exploring all avenues and possibilities for future products BMW now focuses its appeal to the individual customer.

Capitalizing off the success of existing new models BMW continues this process of developing a portfolio of unique "mobile communication statements" where design does the talking. In addition to groundbreaking technology this portfolio group signifies a key element for BMW's long term strategy. The RFK is seen as a niche product contributing to the broadening of this new portfolio. Knowing this we can now understand that the BMW X Coupe Concept was not just a styling exercise. This concept still has an agenda. In the future BMW will offer unique vehicles in each class as they differentiate themselves from the competition.

According to a BMW source, "The RFK will be a sleek fastback coupe-like vehicle although it will not be as spacious or plain as the R-Klasse (which is aimed at the US). The RFK will appeal to the continental European. It will drive like a car, handle like a car and have the same weight distribution as a car".

As of now the RFK will feature a petrol twin-turbo engine from the forthcoming 335i, a twin-turbo diesel from 535d, a new twin-turbo V8 petrol with 450 bhp and a V8 diesel with 380 bhp. A Hydrogen powered no-emission vehicle will also follow later as will probably a V12. Dynamic Drive will enter its next phase which will include a new axle design developed especially for excellent driving characteristics in such a vehicle.

BMW intends to release two RFK's in intervals each based on different size platforms. Seen here in the photos looking more like a WWII German tank is the first engineering prototype test mule using the 7 Series platform. The second RFK will use an extended 5 Series Touring platform. Along with full integration of iDrive apart from major functions the RFK will also spearhead iDrive functions that will download into the ignition key from home or office terminals so all settings are stored for each driver of the car. This includes vehicle settings, seat position, routes, drive preparation and music. The RFK built-in technology will also signal the forthcoming 7 Series in 2008. Also undecided is the exact nomenclature for the RFK but it has been quietly referred to as the V Series (i.e. X5, Z4) with emphasis on "versatility".

While other manufacturers are looking at super wagons BMW calculates this would be commercial suicide. BMW will unveil the RFK as a concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September as they want to show that they are not developing a "van". The car should be ready for launch in 2008.

Do they test during the night/evening hours? I'm guessing the headlights were a necessity... doesn't make sense to do all that camo & stick on those headlights & tails. As long as it looks more like the old M coupe than the X series, I think it'll be teh hot.

That CGI is so stupid. The article says "coupe-like." They already have 4 door wagons... why the hell would they make this 4 dr also?

it seems weird that they would test it that way. doesnt all that bulk completely throw off any type of speed and performance???
