BMW puts emphasis on M division with upcoming new model blitz
By GREG KABLE
BMW’s M division will launch an unprecedented new model blitz over the next four years.
In a strategy aimed squarely at Mercedes-Benz’s AMG performance offshoot, the German carmaker plans V8-powered M3 and M4 models, as well as V10-powered M5 and M6 models.
The M cars will join the BMW lineup by 2007.
Besides effectively doubling the M-car lineup, the wider M line brings the future range into line with BMW’s new naming system in which sedans and wagons carry odd numbers and coupes and convertibles get even numbers.
Also in the pipeline, although not yet approved for production, is a series of lightweight Coupe Sport Leichtgewicht (CSL) specials that takes advantage
of BMW’s growing expertise in carbon fiber construction—technology that has flowed directly from its involvement in Formula One with Williams. CSL models will come in M4 and M6 coupe form only, with even more powerful V8 and V10 engines than standard M cars.

umm, for performance. why buy an m to begin with a) jerk off on the badge or b)to own a car that was engineered to perform. think an entry level m hatchback for 30k would be sweet if it lived up to the label, maybe smg, high reving small engine, lightweight for tossability, rwd etc.

As long as BMW is making money they don't care about prestige and status. They know that the M3 is popular, and the M5 sales are good for a 70k car. They know if they produce more M series cars, maybe for a little cheaper, more stupid kids are going to buy them and in turn make BMW more profitable. See how this works, more M's more money. What is not happening is that the CEO of BMW is like, yeah lets not make anymore cause we might loss status and prestige. He is like pump more of those stupid M's out and make me more money. Wait till you little kiddies grow up and understand business.

"BMW’s fourth-generation 5 Series to feature 380-hp twin-turbo
By GREG KABLE
When BMW’s fourth-generation 5 Series rolls out at the Frankfurt motor show in September 2003 it will feature a new 380-hp, twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine. The next-generation sedan (E60) inherits many features from the latest 7 Series such as a shift-by-wire six-speed automatic, active roll stabilization and a simplified version of the iDrive system controller. BMW will follow in 2005 with a 500-hp 5.5-liter V10-powered M5 designed to provide the M5 with a direct link to BMW's F1 involvement with Williams.
The new engine is part of a range of hot turbocharged units being readied by BMW to place Munich's new mid-ranger in direct competition with the Audi S6, Jaguar S-Type R and Mercedes-Benz E500 without the additional weight brought on by slotting a large capacity V8 engine under its bonnet.
Joining the twin-turbo six in the new 5 Series line-up will be a wide range of engines. They include the recently introduced 2.0-litre inline four together with heavily upgraded versions of BMW's highly rated 2.2-, 2.5 and 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engines. At the upper end of the lineup will be the 3.6-litre and 4.5-litre V8 engines used in the 7 Series. Already equipped with Valvetronic, they will be upgraded to include the new direct-injection system unveiled by BMW on the 760i at last year's Frankfurt motor show. "
i can see them doing the same thing for the one series as they did with the mini cooper. a smaller engine, around 150hp on the base and for the top of the line turbo/supercharge the base engine to save costs.
