JJ -

Here are two that I know of:

DVD Planet

http://www.dvdplanet.com/browse_subc...categoryid=305

Acoustic Sounds (thanks to Emmumessenger)

http://store.acousticsounds.com/stor...&searchtext=18

I did use Acoustic Sounds (no discount, MSRP for discs) which were sent the same day (UPS or 2nd day fedex available) and have got them already. Very happy with customer service, being the first time to buy DVD-audio discs, I called on the phone, very helpfull. Bought 3 disks, all $17.99. Cant wait to try them in the car.

The other site discounts around 25% but I have not used them.

I did try major retailors like Wal-Mart and Target, but they had none (or they were hidden somewhere that staff did not know).

Good luck and let us know what you find.

Circuit City has them. I've seen some in the store, and they're on their web site, too. Seems to be decent prices, with free shipping.

http://www.circuitcity.com - click Music, then "SACD/DVD Audio Discs" in the upper right.

Amazon and buy.com also has some with decent prices. I just ordered Metallica's black album on DVD-A. Can't wait!

www.cduniverse.com & www.towerrecords.com are both good choices... If you have a local Tower or Best Buy they usually have a fairly good selection in stock, although at Tower the prices aren't nearly as good as their website. Circuit City is fairly lame regarding their in-store selection. You might also want to check out the "Music" forum on www.hometheaterforum.com if you're new to high-res audio to get an idea of which discs would be best to show off your new toy. 8)

Cheers,
Jim

It's not going to get any easier since Sony and Philips have won the SACD vs DVD-A battle.

UHF Magazine issue 67 had a writeup on the battle. I'll see if I can find my copy and make a scan. The summary of the article was that although DVD-A had nearly 160 companies backing it, nobody took responsibility to promote it. SACD was only being backed by Sony and Philips but both of them sunk huge money into the standard and got a number of record companies on their side. Apparently more and more record companies are signing up every day. They went on to say that DVD-A is Betamax and SACD is VHS... the war is over.

DVD-A has some inherent advantages over SACD but the key to SACD is that you can produce a disk with both a red book layer and a SACD layer so that it is backwards compatible. You will of course need a SACD player if you want to get all the sound off the disk.

Any ideas on how to create DVD-A discs? It looks like the format supports 2-channel and various bit rates for encoding. Is there a way to take 128kps (or higher) MP3 files, do a bit of processing, and create a DVD-A disc using a DVD writer?

Wouldn't this be completly pointless? Why not put it on a cd? It's not like the DVD-A is going to make it sound better.

EDIT: Sorry, I wasn't thinking about the storage benefit.

Yup, the storage benefit. Also, I think it is established that MP3's on CD's won't work. But I think that the audio on the DVD-A disc is just MPEG audio. I'll play around with it when I get mine, but thought I'd throw it out there to see if anyone else has given this any thought.

You need to convert the mp3's to wav files before they can be read on a normal cd player. Most good burners like nero will do this automagically.

That would work for creating CD's using CD-R discs, but not DVD-A's. The DVD-A format is different that that used for CD's.

Here is a link that has some info on the DVD-A and CD specifications:

Sorry I didn't mean to mislead you. I know how the DVD-A standard works I just thought you were under the impression that mp3's couldn't be burnt on to a cd because they were in mpeg format.

Yep. CD's can too if your player supports CD-Text (and the CD is encoded properly).

No problem. Anyone know of any programs that can create the DVD-A format? Preferably not overly expensive! I wonder if it is simply DVD video/audio, without any video?

That is not going to happen all of the software is for professionals only and very expensive. The TL also plays DTS audio discs. That software is around $300 or $400 I think and in the car would not sound much worse. The DVD-Audio format is a very hi-res format, like SACD. It is well beyond CD's, lets not even talk about MP3's. Even if you could do this I don't think the TL reads DVD-r, DVD+r, DVD-rw, or DVD+rw. I thought I saw that over on vtec.net if I am not mistaken.

Thanks for the links to DVD-A. I may try a few DVDs just for curiousity. I'm mostly interested, however, in connecting my iPod so I can listen to my 100 albums on the fly.

DVD-A uses PCM audio with optional MLP lossless compression. This looks to be more difficult than I thought. The least expensive program I found for creating DVD-A discs is $495, Sound Blaster discWelder Steel. Perhaps and iPod is a better solution...
