Automotive Advertising Spending
Source: Autoline Detroit
USD Per Year Spent:
GM = 2.8B
Ford = 1.5B
DC = 1.5B
Toyota = 1.1B
Nissan= 1.0B
Honda 765M
Hyundai/Kia = 700M
VW = 420M
BMW = 167M
Others = 700M
Total = 10.7B
NOTE: The above does not inlcude the cost of making the ads and it does not include dealers' advertising (which is estimated to be another $10B over the above).

Show says, Advertising really works. When they stop it, model sales goes down. One of the main reasons manufacturers spend so much in ads is to advertise all the rebate offers.
I am surprised to see BMW spend so little on advertising.

When I saw the show last week I thought the same thing about BMW, they have some serious brand equity when they sell like they do with the relatively small ad budget. But they do target their ads well. I see them all the time but watch a lot of Speed and read all the mags.

Im surprised at VW, not so much BMW because their brand more so speaks for itself, and a lot of commercials for the expensive cars makes them seem more common and less special IMO.

BMW's marketing machine is on a different plane of existance. I hear they have a 60-page document detailing how you're supposed to use the BMW logo on any official BMW publication. For example, the logo is only supposed to show up once on any page, X white space on the left, Y on the right, etc. 60 pages of that.
If you look at all their stuff, from the borchures to the website, it's all extremely slick, I don't think there's any other automaker that matches them.
