Audi's 500hp A1 quattro one-off preview the next S1
Autocar
Audi has created a wild 496bhp version of its entry level A1 to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Wörthersee festival for Audi, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen fans held in Austria.
Called the Audi A1 clubsport quattro, the one-off show car gains a heavy dose of rally car-inspired styling that is said to preview the appearance of a hot new four-wheel drive S1 quattro model that is being developed by Audi as a rival to the likes of the Renaultsport Clio.
At the heart of the new hatchback is a heavily tweaked version of Audi's turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder powerplant shoehorned transversely into the A1's compact engine bay.
In standard guise, as seen in the Audi TT-RS and Audi RS3, the direct-injection unit delivers a sturdy 330bhp - or 148bhp more than the most powerful production version of the A1 up to now, the 182bhp turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder 1.4TFSI.
But for the A1 clubsport quattro, the five-cylinder engine gains added boost pressure, a larger intercooler and a redesigned exhaust among other unspecified modifications that see output rise by 166bhp to a supercar like 496bhp; enough to endow the 1390kg hatchback with a power-to-weight ratio of 356.8bhp/tonne, no less.
Torque has also risen by a substantial 229lb ft - or 47 per cent - over the standard unit, peaking at 487lb ft between 2500 and 5300rpm.
Drive is delivered to all four wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox and a modified version of the TT RS's multi-plate clutch Haldex style four-wheel drive system - a set-up that is already earmarked to appear on the A1 quattro and tested by Autocar earlier this year.
Although Audi is quick to play down the relevance of the A1 clubsport quattro's engine to the rest of the A1 line-up, there's no denying its potency in a car of such compact dimensions. Factory claims put its 0-62mph time at just 3.7sec, making it faster up the strip than all of its existing production cars bar the 560bhp naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 powered R8 V10, which boasts an official time of 3.6sec.
Audi also says the extreme hatchback will hit 124mph in 10.9sec and accelerate from 50 to 75mph in fourth gear in just 2.4sec. About the only disappointing thing about the A1 clubsport quattro's overall performance is its top speed, which is limited to 155mph.
While details of the the production version S1 quattro are yet to be revealed, Ingolstadt based sources suggest it will be a significantly milder machine. Nothing's official just yet but rumours suggest it will run the same 210bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine found in a variety of Volkswagen Group offerings, including the Golf GTi.
The A1 clubsport quattro is distinguished by a comprehensively redesigned exterior and matt white paint scheme that combined to provide it with a much more aggressive air than lesser A1 models. The overall look leans heavily on contemporary world rally championship cars, with a deep front bumper, fenders that are widened by 60mm over those worn by the standard model, a clear coated carbonfibre-reinforced plastic roof, large rear wing perched high on the tailgate and a fully functioning diffuser at the rear.
The need for added cooling also sees it receive bonnet mounted ducts and two large air outlets within the trailing edge of the front fenders. Other features include a honeycomb grille insert, unique headlamp and tail lamp graphics and smaller mirror housings than those found on the other A1 models.
Mirroring the move taken with the styling of the quattro concept wheeled out at last year's Paris motor show, Audi's design team has also provided the A1 clubsport quattro with elements that lend from the original quattro produced between 1985 and 1991, including new interpretations of its signature wheel arch blisters and classic turbine style alloy wheels.
The A1 clubsport quattro rides on a heavily modified version of the Volkswagen Group's PQ25 platform featuring adjustable suspension settings, 19-inch wheels shod with 255/30 profile tyres and carbonfibre ceramic discs up front grabbed by purposeful looking six pot callipers.
Inside, the A1 clubsport quattro lives up to its name with a stripped out cabin devoid of the standard A1's rear seat. In its place is an additional cross member aimed at providing added stiffening and dedicated stowage bins for a pair of helmets.
The rally inspired hatchback also uses front carbonfibre backed seats from the R8 GT, four point harnesses, a flat bottom carbonfibre steering wheel, unique instruments and simple pull straps in the place of the standard A1's door handles.

so random, Phee ![pofl](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/pofl.gif)
HOLY FUCK that is one hideous vehicle. You know they've done something wrong when even me, the guy who has the biggest hard-on for suede, (deliberate use of) aluminum trim and racing seats in street cars hates that interior.
The wheels remind me of those hideous M-System wheels found on older 5-series BMWs. It's like a Fiat 500 on steroids. Do not want, at all. It's stick and I don't even care for it. WTF is going on?

• Audi A1 has the look of the Japanese national soccer team
• Agile and fast like a top league soccer player
• Sell as a one-off model and a part of the profit will be donated for a charity
Audi has unveiled a unique A1 at the Tokyo Motor Show: Glistening in the colors of the Japanese national soccer team, the Audi A1 SAMURAI BLUE shows Audi’s respect for the Japanese national soccer team. Audi plans to sell the SAMURAI BLUE as a one-off model and donate a part of the profit for a charity.
“Blue Samurai” is the nickname for Japan’s national soccer team. Blue and white are the colors of the soccer jerseys for both men and women. The Japanese men are the reigning Asian champions, while the women have been even more successful in the world soccer arena: this year they won the championship title in the World Soccer Cup held in Germany.
Blue and white are also the colors of the Audi A1 SAMURAI BLUE, accentuated by the red of the Japanese flag. The 18-inch wheels with their exclusive polygonal design are likewise painted red. The interior equipment is black, with contrasting stitching in blue and corresponding colorful accents for the air vent nozzles, inlays, center console and floor mats. With its powerful 1.4 TFSI engine and 90 kW (122 hp), the A1 SAMURAI BLUE has strong acceleration and high speed, while the sports suspension with 225 millimeter wide, 18-inch wheels give the car the agility of a top league soccer star.
An Audi A1 Limited Edition is also planned to sell in 2012, with its design based on the SAMURAI BLUE.

• New sporty edition models can be ordered for the A1 and A1 Sportback
• Exterior and interior color schemes in Misano Red and Glacier White
• Three different equipment levels available for each edition
Audi has released two new exclusive editions for the A1 and the A1 Sportback. Their names are the A1 amplified red and the A1 amplified white, and they are being launched on the market now.
The new edition models are based on the Ambition line, which is available for all engine versions of both models. The models combine exclusive optional features from Audi, quattro GmbH and Audi Genuine Accessories. In the amplified red line, the body is painted in Misano Red pearl effect, while the amplified white is painted in Glacier White metallic. Both lines are available in three different equipment levels that build on each other.
The first level is known as amplified. On this model, high-gloss black is applied to the roof line, S line roof spoiler, exterior mirror housings and single-frame grille. The exterior is further accentuated by 17-inch alloy wheels in five-arm design with black inserts and a matt, transparent film for the engine hood, roof and rear hatch. Eye-catching features inside the car include air vent sleeves in the body color, black sport seats with stitching in Parade Red (amplified red) or Rock Gray (amplified white) and floor mats with piping in matching colors.
The second level of the two edition models is called amplified plus. Its interior is upgraded by a black headliner, an LED interior light package and a color coordinated ignition key. The interior is further customized by the center console and interior mirror housing, which are both painted in the body color. Stainless steel caps for the pedals and foot rest underscore the car’s sporty character. The exterior has sporty add-on parts from the aerodynamics competition kit, painted the same color as the body, and LED taillights. A special feature is the high-gloss black diffuser insert that integrates two matt black tailpipes on the left side (one tailpipe for engines up to 77 kW).
The third level, amplified advanced, is reserved for A1 models with over 90 kW of engine power. This represents the pinnacle of the sporty edition models. In addition to the equipment features offered for the amplified and amplified plus levels, this version offers the interior features of the S line sport package. In this package, Audi installs S sport seats with black upholstery in Silk Nappa leather and contrasting stitching in Parade Red or Dark Silver. The seat back shells painted in high-gloss Misano Red or Glacier White are the absolute highlight. A matching finish on the floor mats rounds out the color concept. Dark tinted glass at the rear offers privacy. The add-on parts from the aerodynamics competition kit and the large roof wing are both painted in high-gloss black. Xenon plus headlights and matt black 18-inch wheels in five-arm “Rotor” design emphasize the dynamic character of the A1 amplified advanced special edition model.
The A1 amplified red edition models are available now, and the amplified white versions will follow shortly. Prices start at €1,990, while the two higher levels are priced at €3,990 and €6,990.

A great name makes a comeback: Audi is presenting the S1 and the S1 Sportback, the new flagship models in the compact A1 model line. Their 2.0 TFSI develops 170 kW (231 hp) and produces 370 Nm (272.90 lb-ft) of torque; the quattro permanent all-wheel drive and the extensively revamped suspension put the power effortlessly down onto the road. The Audi S1 and the S1 Sportback set the benchmark in their class for dynamic performance.
Back in the 1980s an Audi S1 garnered a legendary reputation – it was the car that would see the brand dominate the World Rally Championship in its day. Now the abbreviation is coming back – but this time as a road-going version: the Audi S1 and the S1 Sportback constitute the new flagship models in the compact A1 model line, adding an entry-level version to the Audi S model portfolio.
“The Audi S1 offers all the virtues of a sports car, great performance, direct handling and permanent quattro drive that puts the power to the road in a superior way,” says Prof. Dr. Hackenberg, Audi Board Member for Technical Development, adding: “The quattro drive has a large following of fans, which is sure to become even larger thanks to the offering in this segment.”
A high-performance four-cylinder unit provides the drive. The 2.0 TFSI fitted with a turbocharger develops 170 kW (231 hp) and produces up to 370 Nm (272.90 lb-ft) of torque. The two-liter engine accelerates the Audi S1 and the S1 Sportback from 0 to 100 km/h (62.14 mph) in 5.8 and 5.9 seconds respectively. The top speed is 250 km/h (155.34 mph). On average the sporty, sonorous TFSI consumes just 7.0 (33.60 US mpg) or 7.1 (33.13 US mpg) liters of fuel per 100 kilometers (162 and 166 grams CO2 per kilometer [260.71 g/mile / 267.15 g/mile]) respectively.
Like all Audi S models, the S1 and the S1 Sportback also come with quattro permanent all-wheel drive onboard. At its heart is a hydraulic multi-plate clutch located on the rear axle. Its specifically tuned control software boasts a decidedly dynamic setup. The electronic differential lock with the fine-tuned wheel-selective torque control is a function of the Electronic Stabilization Control (ESC). It features two-stage deactivation and supplements the work of the multi-plate clutch with additional finely metered braking intervention on the inside wheels – the interaction of both systems makes for extremely agile, precise and stable handling.
The suspension on the two compact sport models has been extensively revamped. The electromechanical power steering has been developed. Modified pivot bearings on the front axle enhance spontaneity when turning. At the rear a four-link design replaces the compound link rear suspension used on the A1 models. The setup is sporty and firm; the Audi drive select dynamic handling system comes with a range of settings to vary the response of the engine, automatic air conditioning and the likewise standard variable shock absorbers.
A larger brake master cylinder as well as large brake discs – front 310 millimeters (12.20 in) in diameter – ensure excellent deceleration. Red brake calipers with S1 logo can be ordered as an option. The two sporty compact models are supplied ex factory with 17-inch wheels with 215/40 R17 tires; Audi offers 18-inch wheels with 225/35 R18 tires as an option.
The Audi S1 and the S1 Sportback are instantly recognizable as the flagship models in the A1 model line. Their xenon plus headlights are all-new while the LED rear lights come with new, horizontally structured graphics. A host of details – particularly on the front and rear bumper, the side sills and the exhaust system – boast more striking styling. Four new exterior colors supplement the available paint finishes. The optional quattro exterior styling package hones the look further, courtesy of features such as a large roof spoiler.
The interior of the two compact sport models is finished in dark tones; black dominates, including on the air vent sleeves. The instruments feature S-specific dark-gray scales; the pedal caps are made out of brushed stainless steel. As an alternative to the standard sport seats, Audi fits the S sport seats with integrated head restraints. The quattro interior styling package can be selected as an option to add striking color accents.
The price of the Audi S1 and the S1 Sportback, which will be available at dealers in Germany in the second quarter of 2014, will be €29,950 and €30,800 respectively. The extensive standard equipment can be supplemented with optional high-end features such as the convenience key, the MMI navigation plus with fold-out color monitor or the Bose surround sound system. The Audi connect module including car phone provides a connection to the Internet, allowing passengers to access the Internet and send e-mails on their mobile devices via a Wi-Fi hotspot, while the driver enjoys in-car access to tailor-made services from Audi connect.
