Aston Martin: DBX News

From here: Geneva ?15. Aston Martin DBX Concept | crankandpiston.com Car Culture Lifestyle

Thought the Vulcan would be Aston’s biggest new at Geneva? Think again. This is the first all-electric, all-wheel drive Aston Martin ever – the DBX Concept – and has been built to ‘challenge the nature of luxury GT travel in the 21st Century’.

“Wait, hang on, wasn’t the new Lagonda supposed to be doing that?” Well, yes and no, since the above design concept could form the basis of the new DB9, Vantage, Vanquish and Rapide when they arrive within the next few years.

Penned by the marque’s Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman, the new DBX Concept features traditional Aston fixtures like the slick headlights, bonnet grooves and wide front grille (plus some simply massive alloys nine double-spoke alloys) but has been built with using machined billet aluminium for a more industrial look. It also features a pretty striking Black Pearl Chromium paint finish. And though Aston has gone ‘non-automotive standard materials’ route on the inside, you can still find leather upholstery as standard.

Principally a design study, few details have been revealed about that all-electric powertrain, Aston revealing only that the electric motors will be powered by lithium sulphur cells and that a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) could be included. Drive-by-wire electric steering thus far completes the engineering round-up, but expect more to come from Aston Martin at the Geneva Motor Show.

Not a fan of it looks-wise. Aston Martin should stick to coupes and sedans.

+1 Don't like it. Looks too much like someone tried to donk an Aston Martin.

Maybe they are just trying to help increase sales for Tesla, the only reason why the entire car would be hideous.

Someone should inform Aston Martin that adding an "X" to the car name isn't a wise idea. Just ask Acura

It will take place at the company's new facility in Wales.

Aston Martin has announced that its first SUV will enter production late next year, following the completion of its new car assembly plant at St Athan, in South Wales.

The company's board of directors recently had their first meeting at the new facility, which includes three converted former-Ministry of Defence hangars. The fitting out of the hangars has already begun and it is set to be complete before the SUV starts production in late 2019.

The new plant will create 750 new jobs for the company, with 150 of those already being hired. When complete the plant will join Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters and Newport Pagnell as the company's production facilities.

"We are delighted at the progress being made at the St Athan site. The team have done a fantastic job in advancing the facility and I was incredibly proud to chair our first Board meeting at the new plant," said Dr Andy Palmer, Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer. "Wales has a long history of engineering excellence and the Board is delighted that it will play such an important part in Aston Martin’s development."

Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport Ken Skates added: "I am delighted to see our partnership with Aston Martin, right in the heart of our Cardiff Airport and St Athan Enterprise Zone, coming to fruition."

"Progress to date continues to match the company’s aspiration for future growth and, when complete, the site will provide highly-skilled employment and world-class apprenticeship opportunities in the automotive sector for many generations to come. I wish them the same success with the next phase."

According to reports, the new SUV from Aston Martin will be called the Varekai, derived from the Roma word for 'wherever', which is appropriate for an off-roader.

The new car will come with a range of powertrain options, including Mercedes-AMG-sourced V8s and V12s, and the hybrid system that will be used in the recently unveiled AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. However, the all-electric drivetrain of the 2015 DBX concept appears to have been scrapped.

Here’s the first prototype of Aston’s answer to Urus and Bentayga. Like it?

This is the new Aston Martin DBX. We can say that with certainty, because Aston has confirmed DBX is indeed the name it’s christening its first SUV with. No Vulcan/Valkyrie/Vantage alliteration here. It’s DBX. And it’s alive.

Here we see the new five-door SUV – a stark contrast to the sleek two-door coupe DBX concept from 2016 – hard at work testing on the Sweet Lamb rally stage in Wales. And when we say hard at work, we obviously mean pratting around sideways. That’s Matt Becker, chief engineer and ex-Lotus handling magician at the wheel. Working hard.

And the work will be continuing all over the world, says Aston Martin. “Though simulation is an essential part of the DBX’s early development phase, this first prototype drive in Wales signifies the start of ‘real world’ testing”, we’re told.

“The SUV will be subjected to a punishing regime that will ultimately see development prototypes of the all-new machine tackle the world’s harshest environments, from the frozen Arctic and scorching deserts of the Middle East to high Alpine passes and the high-speed demands of the German autobahn and Nürburgring Nordschleife.” Obviously. Right, who had testing at the ‘Ring on their prototype bingo card?

As well as having to be good at cruising quietly and being thrown around like a sports car, Aston says the DBX boot camp will ensure it has impressive multi-terrain and towing capabilities. You could well be looking at the Caravan Club’s 2020 Towcar of the Year. If James Bond settles down and swaps his license to kill for a license to create traffic misery.

Aston won’t reveal the finished DBX until this time next year, by which time you’ll have been able to digest the looks. This one is clearly missing production-spec rear lights and door handles, but the Welsh-built SUV does appear to suffer from a slight bout of first-gen Porsche Cayenne-itus (sports car face on a much bigger car). Does the giant frog gob work for you?

Mind you, it’s no more eye-assaulting than a Bentley Bentayga or Lamborghini Urus. Neither of which are struggling for sales, you’ll note.

Oh, and if you spotted that the wheels reference the spider-web design that we saw on those new pictures of the Valkyrie hypercar last week, award yourself ten shiny internet points.
