Aston Martin: DBX News

From here: Geneva ?15. Aston Martin DBX Concept | crankandpiston.com Car Culture Lifestyle

Thought the Vulcan would be Aston’s biggest new at Geneva? Think again. This is the first all-electric, all-wheel drive Aston Martin ever – the DBX Concept – and has been built to ‘challenge the nature of luxury GT travel in the 21st Century’.

“Wait, hang on, wasn’t the new Lagonda supposed to be doing that?” Well, yes and no, since the above design concept could form the basis of the new DB9, Vantage, Vanquish and Rapide when they arrive within the next few years.

Penned by the marque’s Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman, the new DBX Concept features traditional Aston fixtures like the slick headlights, bonnet grooves and wide front grille (plus some simply massive alloys nine double-spoke alloys) but has been built with using machined billet aluminium for a more industrial look. It also features a pretty striking Black Pearl Chromium paint finish. And though Aston has gone ‘non-automotive standard materials’ route on the inside, you can still find leather upholstery as standard.

Principally a design study, few details have been revealed about that all-electric powertrain, Aston revealing only that the electric motors will be powered by lithium sulphur cells and that a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS) could be included. Drive-by-wire electric steering thus far completes the engineering round-up, but expect more to come from Aston Martin at the Geneva Motor Show.

It seems so high off the ground.

Not a fan of it looks-wise. Aston Martin should stick to coupes and sedans.

+1 Don't like it. Looks too much like someone tried to donk an Aston Martin.

Aston needs to fire its headlights guys. They're getting worse.

Maybe they are just trying to help increase sales for Tesla, the only reason why the entire car would be hideous.

Someone should inform Aston Martin that adding an "X" to the car name isn't a wise idea. Just ask Acura :snicker:

It will take place at the company's new facility in Wales.

Aston Martin has announced that its first SUV will enter production late next year, following the completion of its new car assembly plant at St Athan, in South Wales.

The company's board of directors recently had their first meeting at the new facility, which includes three converted former-Ministry of Defence hangars. The fitting out of the hangars has already begun and it is set to be complete before the SUV starts production in late 2019.

The new plant will create 750 new jobs for the company, with 150 of those already being hired. When complete the plant will join Aston Martin’s Gaydon headquarters and Newport Pagnell as the company's production facilities.

"We are delighted at the progress being made at the St Athan site. The team have done a fantastic job in advancing the facility and I was incredibly proud to chair our first Board meeting at the new plant," said Dr Andy Palmer, Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer. "Wales has a long history of engineering excellence and the Board is delighted that it will play such an important part in Aston Martin’s development."

Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport Ken Skates added: "I am delighted to see our partnership with Aston Martin, right in the heart of our Cardiff Airport and St Athan Enterprise Zone, coming to fruition."

"Progress to date continues to match the company’s aspiration for future growth and, when complete, the site will provide highly-skilled employment and world-class apprenticeship opportunities in the automotive sector for many generations to come. I wish them the same success with the next phase."

According to reports, the new SUV from Aston Martin will be called the Varekai, derived from the Roma word for 'wherever', which is appropriate for an off-roader.

The new car will come with a range of powertrain options, including Mercedes-AMG-sourced V8s and V12s, and the hybrid system that will be used in the recently unveiled AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. However, the all-electric drivetrain of the 2015 DBX concept appears to have been scrapped.

Here’s the first prototype of Aston’s answer to Urus and Bentayga. Like it?

This is the new Aston Martin DBX. We can say that with certainty, because Aston has confirmed DBX is indeed the name it’s christening its first SUV with. No Vulcan/Valkyrie/Vantage alliteration here. It’s DBX. And it’s alive.

Here we see the new five-door SUV – a stark contrast to the sleek two-door coupe DBX concept from 2016 – hard at work testing on the Sweet Lamb rally stage in Wales. And when we say hard at work, we obviously mean pratting around sideways. That’s Matt Becker, chief engineer and ex-Lotus handling magician at the wheel. Working hard.

And the work will be continuing all over the world, says Aston Martin. “Though simulation is an essential part of the DBX’s early development phase, this first prototype drive in Wales signifies the start of ‘real world’ testing”, we’re told.

“The SUV will be subjected to a punishing regime that will ultimately see development prototypes of the all-new machine tackle the world’s harshest environments, from the frozen Arctic and scorching deserts of the Middle East to high Alpine passes and the high-speed demands of the German autobahn and Nürburgring Nordschleife.” Obviously. Right, who had testing at the ‘Ring on their prototype bingo card?

As well as having to be good at cruising quietly and being thrown around like a sports car, Aston says the DBX boot camp will ensure it has impressive multi-terrain and towing capabilities. You could well be looking at the Caravan Club’s 2020 Towcar of the Year. If James Bond settles down and swaps his license to kill for a license to create traffic misery.

Aston won’t reveal the finished DBX until this time next year, by which time you’ll have been able to digest the looks. This one is clearly missing production-spec rear lights and door handles, but the Welsh-built SUV does appear to suffer from a slight bout of first-gen Porsche Cayenne-itus (sports car face on a much bigger car). Does the giant frog gob work for you?

Mind you, it’s no more eye-assaulting than a Bentley Bentayga or Lamborghini Urus. Neither of which are struggling for sales, you’ll note.

Oh, and if you spotted that the wheels reference the spider-web design that we saw on those new pictures of the Valkyrie hypercar last week, award yourself ten shiny internet points.

2021 DBX

https://www.netcarshow.com/aston_martin/2021-dbx/

A bold new chapter and a landmark moment in Aston Martin's illustrious 106-year history, Aston Martin has unveiled its first SUV and a model that will propel the brand to new heights worldwide. That model, is DBX.

The culmination of an extensive development programme that began with physical testing in Wales last year and virtual development stretching back to 2015, Aston Martin DBX signals a new era in Aston Martin's pursuit to deliver exceptional performance, style and usability in a segment previously unexplored by the world-famous manufacturer. Bringing both the versatility and indulgence expected of a luxury SUV with sports car levels of dynamic performance, DBX sets a bold new standard in this sector.

Aston Martin Lagonda President & Group CEO, Dr. Andy Palmer said: "I can't emphasise enough how incredibly exciting and significant DBX is for Aston Martin. Through its development alone, this beautiful SUV has already taken the company into new territories and in inspiring directions. Aston Martin DBX also marks a key moment in the delivery of the third and final phase of our Second Century Plan, not only representing the promised expansion of our portfolio but also signaling the start of production at Aston Martin's second manufacturing plant. We have both delivered this model through our expertise, but also by garnering invaluable experience and knowledge from external counsel, including our Female Advisory Board. This is a real landmark for this great British brand and I promise that DBX will reward all who experience it in their everyday lives."

Set to be built in Aston Martin's purpose-built manufacturing facility in St Athan, Wales, the foundation of Aston Martin DBX is a new dedicated SUV platform, something rarely seen across the sector. More than ever before, this clean sheet of paper has allowed all departments within Aston Martin to innovate and push the boundaries of what British design and engineering can create, resulting in a truly remarkable product.

Utilising bonded aluminium, a construction method Aston Martin has refined through the development of its sports cars, the body structure is both very light and incredibly stiff, assisting in the delivery of an overall kerbweight of 2,245kg. Right from its genesis, it was designed to allow maximum room in the cabin, putting a premium on refinement and class leading spaciousness for both front and rear occupants. Meanwhile, the exceptional stiffness inherent in the design of the new platform has also enabled DBX to achieve exceptional dynamics both on and off-road.

Adaptive triple volume air suspension has been combined with the latest 48v electric anti-roll control system (eARC) and electronic adaptive dampers to provide the new SUV with a huge breadth of ability. With its capacity to raise the ride height by 45mm or lower it by 50mm the air suspension gives any driver the confidence to tackle a wide range of terrain. While this of course provides benefits while on the move, the system can be further programmed to aid with ingress, egress and loading requirements, aiding on a practical level.

The adaptive triple chamber air springs enable variable spring stiffness, giving both luxurious comfort and dynamic prowess. Extraordinarily the eARC - capable of 1,400Nm of anti-roll force per axle - can limit Aston Martin DBX's body roll for handling that is much more akin to that of a sports car than an SUV. This sophisticated system of adaptive air suspension, dampers and eARC allows for maximum ride comfort when transporting up to five occupants and their luggage, while maintaining a highly responsive and engaging dynamic capability.

Powered by a new version of the characterful 4-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine found in DB11 and Vantage, DBX features an impressive output of 550PS and 700NM of torque, carefully tuned to meet the specific needs of this model. With a sound character that is unquestionably Aston Martin, the active exhaust system ensures this is a luxury SUV that can sound refined one moment and exhilarating the next. The engine's versatility isn't restricted to its vocals either; the turbocharged V8 has cylinder deactivation to enhance fuel economy, yet it can also propel DBX from 0 to 62mph in 4.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 181mph.

Transmitting this power and torque to the ground is a nine-speed torque convertor automatic gearbox, allied to an all-wheel drive system with active differentials featuring an active central differential and an electronic rear limited slip differential (eDiff). This allows the torque to be moved precisely both fore and aft in the vehicle and also across the rear axle. When combined with the bespoke steering system that has been tuned to deliver feel and sports car-like response, Aston Martin DBX imbues the driver with an overriding sense of control, whatever the conditions.

Aston Martin's first ever full-size 5-seat model is not only exceptionally versatile in terms of the terrain that it can tackle, it is also extremely adaptable to a wide variety of lifestyle needs and owners. Designed to accommodate the world's 99th percentile male and 5th percentile female, DBX has been very deliberately created with instant familiarity and ease of use from the start.

With 632 litres of boot space and 40:20:40 split folding rear seats DBX possesses all the flexible load capacity expected of an SUV with class-leading interior space. The load space offers a practical and cleanly designed space. A narrow load sill and broad aperture maximises the practicality for a variety of luggage, such as suitcases, golf bags and ski equipment.

Complimenting the incredibly high standard specification of Aston Martin DBX, which includes all available active safety systems, there are many optional accessory packages offered. These packages will tailor the car even further to customers' needs, sports or pastimes. For example, the Pet package will include, amongst other things, a portable washer to help attend to the needs of a muddy dog after a walk. Alternatively, the Snow package will deliver boot warmers to make a ski trip just that little bit more pleasurable.

The luxuriously handcrafted interior of DBX has been designed to provide equal space and comfort whether sitting in the front or rear of the car. Class-leading headroom and legroom combines with a full-length glass panoramic roof and frameless door glass to offer a fantastically light and spacious cabin environment. The use of sports car seat packaging in the front not only provides the driver with exceptional support and long-distance driving comfort, but also provides knee and footwell clearance for those sitting behind.

Small touches throughout, including separate central armrests, glovebox design and the ergonomic positioning of the car's key control systems, have been guided carefully by the input of the brand's Female Advisory Board, dealership feedback and a variety of private focus groups held worldwide. Not limited to this area, the guidance provided has been key to the success of DBX's overall design.

The seats are trimmed in sumptuous, full grain leather, sourced from long term partner Bridge of Weir. An industry first, both the headlining and electric roof blind are available in a luxurious Alcantara® finish, providing a harmonious design, light obscuration and solar attenuation without compromising headroom. Throughout the cabin, Aston Martin DBX maintains an authenticity of materials, with judicious use of metal, glass and wood throughout the cabin.

Another design highlight includes the elegantly crafted bridged centre console allowing for both flexible storage below and a beautiful, architectural centrepiece. This feature keeps valuables close to hand while not occupying the passenger seat and away from dirt on the car's floor mats. As part of 'Q by Aston Martin' - Aston Martin's personalisation service - optional features of this centre console can be machined from a solid piece of wood, such as Walnut, for added tactility.

A contemporary range of exquisite wood, composite and metal veneers ensure that the cabin can be tailored to any taste. This includes a range of innovative materials and an industry first application of a fabric made from 80% wool. A new flax composite - derived from the same plant as fine linen - also provides an alternative to carbon fibre and a distinctive design aesthetic.

Framed by these materials is an abundance of technology. A 10.25" TFT screen sits elegantly flush in the centre console, while a huge 12.3" TFT screen provides a wealth of information to the driver. Apple CarPlay comes as standard, as does a 360-degree camera system and ambient lighting that offers 64 different colours in two zones.

DBX's exterior works as hard as the interior at bringing the elegance of Aston Martin's sports cars into the world of the SUV. From the signature 'DB' grille at the front, through the sculptured sides and design feature line, to the tailgate with a flip that draws inspiration from Vantage, this is an Aston Martin from first glance to detailed inspection. Beautiful details like the hidden side glass seals on the frameless doors and glass B-pillar finishers add an elegant sleekness and confidence to the stance. Cutaway sills also assist in narrowing the stepover required to enter the sumptuous cabin, while reducing the risk of ruining a fine dress or suit on arrival to a dinner engagement.

Aerodynamics were an important consideration within the design process and this included the novel experience for the team of running computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tests with a DBX towing a trailer with a DB6 on it. At the car's front, the daytime running lights (DRLs) have an integrated aerodynamic duct, which channels air through the front wheel arches and along the side, helping to reduce both drag and lift while also cooling the brakes. Air flows cleanly over the roof, through the rear wing, over the rear window and on to the rear flip. This unique approach and design detail allows the rear screen to self-clear on the move. Aerodynamic design has also played a key part in passenger comfort because as one of only a few companies using computational aeroacoustics technology, Aston Martin's engineers have been able to keep cabin noise to a minimum at speed.

Aston Martin is incredibly proud that Aston Martin DBX, an SUV intended to expand the sales reach of the brand worldwide, will be built in Britain at the new manufacturing plant in St Athan, Wales. With its all-wheel drive system, DBX is a car that will allow the company to increase its presence in markets where perhaps the weather or terrain is less than conducive to rear-wheel drive sports cars. The clear emphasis on a spacious and luxurious cabin - whether seated in the front or back - will also allow Aston Martin to better reach customers who prefer to be driven rather than drive.

Further adding to the desirability of DBX, the first 500 owners of this landmark model will benefit from an exclusive '1913 Package'. Fitted with a unique fender badge, sill plaques and an inspection plaque detailing its limited build-run, each of these first examples will be personally endorsed and inspected by Andy Palmer. In addition, each customer will also receive a unique build-book signed by both Aston Martin's CEO and Chief Creative Officer Marek Reichman and an invitation to a regionally hosted Waldorf Astoria celebration cocktail party, hosted by a member of the Aston Martin Lagonda executive team.

Dr Andy Palmer said: "DBX is a car that will give many people their first experience of Aston Martin ownership. As such it needed to be true to the core values established in our sports cars, while also providing the lifestyle versatility expected of a luxury SUV. To have produced such a beautiful, hand built, yet technologically advanced car is a proud moment for Aston Martin."

Recommended Retail Price from £158,000 in the UK, €193,500 in Germany and $189,900 in USA. Aston Martin DBX is on sale now, with first deliveries scheduled to begin Q2 2020.

Many times we test high-powered crossovers but view them through the same lens as their performance-oriented siblings. Is this a Mustang? Is this a Porsche? Is it worthy? The list of crossovers subjected to navel-gazing and hand-wringing is long. Rather than fretting over the badge or the shape, it’s helpful to simply judge these vehicles on their merits. After all, the 2021 Aston Martin DBX was created because crossovers are essential, not because Aston ran out of sports-car ideas.

The DBX is the first and assuredly not the last crossover in Aston Martin’s 108-year history that’s filled with glittering sports cars and financial unease. The latter is the reason the DBX exists, so as to allow for the former to continue to endure. Put another way: It’s 2021. Ya gotta have a crossover, and it needs to be able to do stuff.
The last time I reviewed an Aston, the DB11, I piloted it through the sun-drenched Tuscan countryside at high speeds. Five years later I find myself measuring another Aston under vastly different circumstances on vastly different merits. That’s actually perfect.

The DBX is a crossover that can run, but my first order of business is strapping my son’s rear-facing car seat in the back. It fits pretty well, and even with him right behind the driver’s seat, I still had a decent amount of room. Despite the dramatic roofline, I was able to get him in and out of the DBX with reasonable comfort. A minivan with sliding doors and a low ride height is easier, but the Aston is about as fit for toddler duty as any coupe-styled crossover can be. My son’s reaction? He loved the blue leather with its white stitching and noted the car “yelled.” That’s what an AMG-built turbo V8 sounds like, son.

The DBX’s cabin is worth our test car's nearly $211,000 sticker. It’s interesting and stylish, rather than decadent. The all-Aurora blue leather looks and feels expensive. The sea of blue is broken up by a camel-colored Alcantara headliner, the ivory seatbelts and a light olive aspen overlay that accents the center console. The contrasting white stitching is subtle but intricate on the seats and door panels, and the seatbacks and large steering wheel proudly display the Aston badge. There’s no shifter, but the paddles are large and easy to use, returning a satisfying clack. To select park, drive, neutral or reverse, there’s buttons set across the top of the dash, which opens up the console and ties the DBX aesthetically to the cabins of most 21st century Aston Martins. So too does the glass start-stop button centered right in the middle of the dash.

Aesthetically, the DBX is perhaps the best example of a brand translating its sporting tradition to a crossover. Narrow your vision to the grille, hood and headlights: that’s an Aston straight out of central casting. The DBX wins points, however, for completing the look. There’s plenty of crossovers that look sporty from the A-pillar forward, but the DBX continues that vibe right through the taillights. Note the beltline that rises then falls through the rear quarter panel and the Vantage-inspired flip in the back. Aston really sticks the landing -- which is not easy to do with crossover designs -- finishing cleanly and with flourish. There’s also frameless doors, 22-inch gloss graphite wheels, hood blades, hockey stick-shaped contours and vents integrated into the front quarters. It’s not one thing; all of the design elements make the DBX naturally feel like an Aston. Ask Porsche if it’s easy to make a crossover that’s immediately accepted -- no matter how attractive and powerful it is.

https://o.aolcdn.com/images/dims3/GL..._185238332.jpghttps://o.aolcdn.com/images/dims3/GL...1851173981.jpg

Yes, the DBX is alluring and the power plentiful. Sourced from Mercedes-AMG, the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 is rated at 542 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque. It hits 60 mph in 4.3 seconds and feels every bit that quick. The nine-speed automatic transmission shifts quickly when needed, and also will hold second and third gear almost surprisingly long during aggressive acceleration. The tuning reinforces the feel of a sports car, and don't forget that this V8 is used in the DB11 and Vantage. There are several driving modes. I spent a lot of time in "GT," which is a reasonable blend of comfort and capability, though dialing up "Sport" on the expressway was logical and deepened the tenor of the exhaust note. I used "Sport+" and "Terrain" sparingly, as there wasn’t much call for them. Unlike my DB11 drive, I didn’t push the limits of the DBX often. I ran errands, picked up groceries (eight bags fit in the rear), grabbed take out and used it like a crossover. Dogs show up in plenty of the DBX’s marketing materials, but I resisted the urge to put my golden retriever in back, though Aston offers an optional pet pack complete with a leash and bowls.

The DBX is a midsize crossover that handles well. The brakes are direct and return quick stopping, while the steering is light yet direct. It feels like a sporty crossover built by Aston Martin, in Wales, as the kickplates read.

My tester started at $179,986 and with multiple options, including the Elegance and Indulgence packs, came in at $210,986. There’s no point in debating value or obsessing over which options are actually worth it. You either have the money to buy an Aston Martin or you don’t, and if you do, you’ll probably get a few options. That said, there are practical implications at play. The DBX does live up to its mission as an authentic Aston Martin and a usable crossover. But, a reasonable person of means could logically conclude that a similarly sized BMW or Mercedes crossover at one third of this price will do the family hauling just as well, and then still park a DB11 or Vantage in the driveway alongside it. Or get a G-Class, Range Rover or absolutely loaded Cadillac Escalade, and then you’re getting an actual sport utility vehicle to complement your Bond car.

It’s a lot to think about and this is not a unique argument to Aston Martin. The Lamborghini Urus and Bentley Bentayga face similar challenges; as will Ferrari's upcoming SUV. In the end, Aston had to get on ‘the menu’’ so to speak for purveyors of luxury who desire the brand but don’t want or need a sports car. That’s the brilliance of the DBX. Buyers can look at it with no knowledge of Aston’s history and decide the DBX is what they want, rather than a sports car they are ill-equipped to operate. They want the badge and they need to haul the kids and golden retriever. They're willing to pay for it. What they get in return is authentic. It’s an Aston Martin and a crossover, elegantly fulfilling its duties as both require.

The 2022 Aston Martin DBX, the UK brand's first SUV, may finally be getting some new engine options. Since the DBX was launched in 2020, Aston has only offered the US with a single engine choice, a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 sourced from Mercedes-AMG. It produces 542 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque, which is potent but not class-leading.

Last month, spy shots from the Nurburgring showed Aston was working a new hybrid drivetrain for the DBX. It's currently unclear which engine the DBX hybrid would use. Aston could downsize the AMG's 3.0-liter turbocharged mild-hybrid inline-six, or possibly adopt the 843 hp plug-in hybrid drivetrain from the new GT 63 S E Performance. Based on new spy shots from the Green Hell, there could be a third option for a more potent DBX variant.

Our photographers previously spotted a white DBX test mule with "hybrid vehicle" stickers, but recently noticed a black prototype with some clear differences. Unlike the hybrid, which looked mostly like the production DBX, this latest test mule has a much larger grille, different air intakes, and more camouflage to disguise the changes. It clearly appears like Aston is testing a more high-performance DBX here. This car sounded louder than the existing DBX. If we had to guess, we'd say this DBX will be powered by a V12 engine and come with the DBX S moniker.

Aston Martin currently offers its 5.2-liter twin-turbo V12 in the DB11, DBS, and limited-edition V12 Speedster. This motor is tuned to produce 630 hp in the DB11, 690 hp in the V12 Speedster, and 711 hp in the DBS. We assume the V12-powered DBX would be closer to the 630-hp output. This would be sizable power boost, making the DBX more competitive with performance SUVs like the Lamborghini Urus.

There is no official word from Aston Martin on when we could see any new DBX variants, but we know they are coming.

The new DBX707 is an SUV like no other. One which elevates Aston Martin to the pinnacle of the segment with a unique combination of blistering performance, supreme dynamics, unmistakable style and absolute luxury. Engineered with an abundance of character and compelling capability DBX707 is the ultimate SUV in every respect.

Fastest. Most powerful. Best handling. Three accolades for which the DBX707 was conceived to claim. Not by blindly chasing benchmarks but achieved on its own terms and in its own inimitable way. For Aston Martin this meant ensuring there is nuance behind the numbers - that's to say world-beating power and pace matched by exceptional precision, dynamic flair and genuine engagement for an addictive and uniquely impressive driving experience. A sabre in a segment of sledgehammers.

Taking the V8 DBX's widely acclaimed design, dynamics and driver-pleasing character as its starting point, Aston Martin DBX707 builds brilliantly on those authentic sporting attributes. Every area of the car has been enhanced to boost performance, intensify driving pleasure and amplify its on-road presence.

Aston Martin Chief Executive Officer, Tobias Moers, said of the DBX707: "Right from its first introduction the DBX has represented Aston Martin's dynamic and design values in a way that proves not all SUVs have to conform to the same compromises. With the DBX707 we have pushed the boundaries in every area to create a car which sets new standards of performance and desirability. The fastest, most powerful, best handling and most engaging car of its kind, it propels Aston Martin to the pinnacle of SUV performance".

Starting with the powertrain, Aston Martin's engineering team set about realising the full potential of the DBX's 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8. Led by Aston Martin's Head of Powertrain Engineering, Ralph Illenberger, the DBX707's engine now features ball bearing turbochargers and a bespoke engine calibration to liberate more power and torque. Also new to Aston Martin's flagship high performance SUV is a 9-speed 'wet clutch' automatic transmission. Capable of managing much increased torque loadings compared with a regular torque converter automatic, this high-performance transmission allows output of the 4.0-litre V8 to be lifted to an immense 707PS and 900Nm, increases of 157PS and 200Nm over the DBX (V8).

The adoption of the new wet clutch transmission brings further benefits. Most noticeably much faster gear changes compared to the torque converter transmission. The feel of the shift is more immediate and direct, which gives the driver an increased sense of control and responsiveness, and a dramatic character change from the DBX (V8). Launch capability is also improved, which contributes towards the Aston Martin DBX707's 0-62mph time of 3.3 seconds.

Aston Martin's Head of Powertrain, Ralph Illenberger said: "With this exceptional new model we have truly unlocked the performance potential within the DBX to create a world beating high-performance SUV. The huge gains we have found in both power and torque demonstrates not only the inherent prowess of the 4.0-litre biturbo V8, but Aston Martin's appetite and ability for finding uncompromising engineering solutions. The combination of this magnificent engine with a new 9-speed 'wet-clutch' transmission sits at the heart of DBX707's formidable capabilities and unforgettable character."

Integral to the Aston Martin DBX707's suite of performance enhancements is the standard fitment of Carbon Ceramic Brakes. Measuring 420mm front and 390mm rear, these CCB discs are gripped by 6-piston calipers and result in a 40.5kg reduction in unsprung weight. Revisions to the braking system's hydraulic sizing and booster tune improve pedal feel and braking response for greater precision and driver confidence. Improved brake cooling has been achieved by taking air from both the main cooling intake and the underfloor, with high performance brake pads delivering excellent friction consistency across a wide temperature range.

Wheels and tyres are 22in as standard (in a choice of Sport and Ribbon designs), with an optional 23in alloy wheel offered in a choice of textured black or satin black with diamond turned highlights. The adoption of a 23in wheel also brings dynamic benefits, with the larger diameter tyre offering improved steering response, better primary body control and improved lap times.

DBX707 also features a new version of the electronic limited slip rear differential (e-diff). Strengthened to handle the full 900Nm of torque, it features a revised (shorter) final drive ratio of 3.27 compared to 3.07 for the DBX V8. This aids the Aston Martin DBX707's sprinting ability through the lower gears and enhances in-gear response, while retaining the efficiency and cruising refinement offered by the 9-speed transmission.

Torque distribution front-to-rear remains fully automatic, with the ability to send up to 100% of the torque to the rear axle on demand. Careful calibration of the e-diff ensures the DBX707 has the cornering agility, sporting feel and dynamic character of a true sports car. One that integrates chassis and powertrain technology to find the sweetest handling balance and seek to maintain the optimum combination of traction and agility at all times.

Key to the DBX707's exceptional handling is its air suspension system. Retaining the basic architecture and triple volume air chambers of the DBX V8 - already regarded as the best-handling SUV in the market - Aston Martin DBX707 features a dedicated chassis tune optimised to its uncompromising demands and objectives.

Starting with the suspension, Aston Martin DBX707 features new damper valving and recalibration of dynamic spring volume switching to improve body control and steering response. The electronic power steering system has also been adjusted to improve steering feel, with greater effort build-up off centre to help the driver build a clearer picture of increasing cornering loads and available grip.

Combined with tighter management of heave (vertical movement over bumps and crests or in compressions), pitch (when the car dives under braking or squats under acceleration) and body roll, DBX707 gives the driver easier ability to adjust the yaw of the car with natural pedal or steering inputs. Further detail changes have been made to the eARC (Electronic Active Roll Control) system, with revised parameters that heighten the sense of agility and improve the dynamic balance of the car.

To underline the Aston Martin DBX707's driver-focussed credentials there have also been some changes and enhancements to the Dynamic Drive modes. "Race Start" is available in GT Sport and Sport+ modes to maximise off-the-line acceleration and truly showcase the enhanced performance. Revised active logic in the all-wheel drive system transfer case achieves greater harmony and precise control between the driveline and the ESP system, for a more natural, sports car-like driving experience.

Aston Martin's Head of Vehicle Engineering and Procurement, Drummond Jacoy, adds: "Creating the ultimate SUV presented formidable challenges for our engineering team. Too often this class of car is characterized by an obsession with brute force. With DBX707 our objective was to match immense performance with impeccable control and precision, combined with an authentic sporting character essential in every Aston Martin model. To this end we applied an uncompromising approach to every area of the vehicle. Engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, electronic systems and aerodynamics have all been subject to extensive enhancement and meticulous tuning. The result is a car which sets new standards and further distinguishes the DBX from its class rivals."

In the spirit of placing the driver in control Aston Martin DBX707 introduces a revised lower console containing new drive mode selection switches. Now, rather than having to enter a sub-menu within the infotainment system, the driver has immediate fingertip control of key dynamic modes and setting. These include dedicated buttons for suspension mode, ESP, manual gear selection mode - which now holds manual like a sports car, rather than defaulting back to auto - and active exhaust switch, which opens the valves of new quad tailpipe sports exhaust system without needing to be in Sport drive mode.

In keeping with its extensive engineering upgrades the exterior and interior of the DBX707 have received an equally thorough design makeover. The result is spectacular - overtly sporting but with the style and attention to detail for which Aston Martin is rightly celebrated.

New front-end treatment sees the DBX receive a larger front grille and all-new design of DRL complete with new air intakes and brake cooling ducts, plus a new front splitter profile. The satin chrome grille - enlarged to significantly increase cooling airflow to both the ultra-high performance V8 and new 9-speed transmission - features double vanes, the six horizontal bars now split to create more visual interest and make this range-topping model immediately identifiable.

Dark satin chrome window surrounds and new louvred bonnet blades co-ordinate perfectly with the front grille and gloss black splitter, continuing along the flanks with gloss black side sills, which now feature a deeper and more heavily sculpted profile to give the DBX707 a ground-hugging stance. DBX707 also welcomes the addition of soft-close doors, further enhancing the SUV's luxury credentials.

Rear-end treatment is just as dramatic. Enhancing both aesthetic form and aerodynamic function a new lip spoiler has been added to the roof wing to reduce lift and increase high speed stability, with a significantly enlarged twin rear diffuser rising to meet the new large diameter quad exhaust system. Finished in satin black to compliment the gloss black treatment of the diffuser this new exhaust has been tuned to deliver a unique sound signature. Completing the rear-end changes a new rear bumper complete with integrated quarter panel vents accentuate the DBX707's muscular physique.

Aston Martin's Chief Creative Officer, Marek Reichman, adds: "The key to DBX707's design DNA is capturing the confidence that comes from its dynamic supremacy. When you are the alpha SUV you don't have to try too hard, therefore, we concentrated on those areas of the design that would make the DBX707 instantly recognisable as the highest performing model. Naturally, function is the driver for some of the changes - most notably the larger grille aperture, rear spoiler and optional 23in wheels - but elsewhere - such as the side sills and rear bumper - we expressed the DBX707's immense performance in ways that create a more aggressive stance and greater muscularity. The result is a design that exudes potency while retaining our commitment to pure lines and perfect proportions. DBX707 is a true performance beast, yet retains the beauty and elegance you expect from Aston Martin's DNA"

The sporting theme continues inside with Sport seats fitted as standard (Comfort seats are available as a no-cost option). All seat options come with 16-way electric adjustment plus heating in front and rear as standard. There are three choices of interior environments - standard-fit Accelerate, which features a mix of leather and Alcantara®, as well as the optional Inspire - Comfort and Inspire Sport, which features full Semi-Aniline leather complete with embroidered Aston Martin wings on the headrest, a contrast stripe down the centre of the seat and perforation pattern in the seat back and base cushion.

As on the exterior, the DBX707's interior features a dark chrome finish to switchgear as standard. Bright chrome and carbon fibre can be specified as an option. Piano Black veneer is standard with carbon fibre or bronze metal mesh veneer finishes available as an option.

For customers looking to further enhance the exclusive nature of DBX707 and create something truly unique, Q by Aston Martin, the brands bespoke service delivers the ultimate in personalisation. Offering an extensive palette of options, from unique graphics through to tinted carbons and bespoke materials on both the interior and exterior, each 'Q by Aston Martin - Commission' car can push the boundaries of desire and is completely tailored to the customer.

As the flagship model in the DBX range, the DBX707 is poised to continue the multi-award-winning achievements of Aston Martin's first SUV, which has achieved more than 3000 sales in its first year of production and scooped a host of accolades. These include 'Best Luxury SUV' at the GQ Car Awards, Top Gear's 'Super SUV of the Year' award and back-to-back wins in PR Arabia National Auto Award 'Best Super Luxury SUV' category.

Aston Martin DBX707 production is due to commence in Q1 of 2022, with first deliveries scheduled to begin during early Q2 2022.

OLBIA, Sardinia – What is the definition of a supercar? It varies from generation to generation, from country to country, and from brand to brand. It’s the type of complex question that could fuel pub talk until the taps run dry. Aston Martin’s supercars have historically been the low-slung two-door kind, but the British firm submitted a different answer by releasing the 2023 Aston Martin DBX 707. It’s an SUV that serves supercar-like power, supercar-like acceleration, and a supercar-like price. Does it deserve a spot in this elite group in spite of its family-friendly proportions? I traveled to the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia to find out.

On paper, the 707 is a DBX with a more powerful engine – that’s one way to sum it up but it’s cruelly unfair. Dig deeper and you’ll discover hundreds of changes made to differentiate the two models, both in terms of design and in terms of driving dynamics. The grille is 27% bigger (it’s not just BMW riding this train), the side skirts have been redesigned, there’s a carbon fiber spoiler attached to the top part of the hatch, and the rear bumper is now vented. One of the most striking design cues is the rear diffuser: loosely inspired by the unit fitted to the Valkyrie, it sticks out far beyond the bumper and looks ready to pick a fight with every curb that comes its way. Aston Martin told me you can still fit the 707 with a hitch, so that’s a relief. Wait: tow? With this? Certainly! Bolt that hitch on it and you can pull approximately 6,000 pounds.

While some of these tweaks are purely aesthetic, others allowed Aston Martin to hone the DBX’s aerodynamic profile. Adding splitters to the front bumper stabilizes airflow, for example, and Sam Holgate, Aston Martin’s chief designer for mid-engined models and SUVs, pointed out that the 707 has about 5% less lift than the regular DBX.

“Mainly, that came out from the front of the car by venting air out of the arches, but then we got it back with the rear spoiler, so this car is completely lift-neutral front to rear, regardless of whether you’re traveling at high or low speeds,” he told me.

In a way, the 707 is a laboratory that incorporates some of the feedback that Aston Martin has received about the DBX since production started in 2020. Buyers wanted soft-close doors; it’s got them. And, there is one improvement that Aston Martin’s engineering team is particularly proud of. “We redesigned the cupholders to take a bigger variety of cups,” said Andrew Tokley, Aston Martin’s senior manager of vehicle engineering. Customer feedback, much of it from American buyers directly shaped the new cupholders (no mention of American car reviewers). Scoff if you must, but they were surprisingly useless before.

As in the regular DBX, all of the materials that the passengers see and touch are top-notch, which you’d rightfully expect in a vehicle that goes deep into $200,000 territory. Aston Martin really sweated the details: every stitch is correctly aligned and every switch feels solid. Its heritage is rooted in luxury, after all.

The only disappointment inside – and it’s not an insignificant one – is the infotainment system. Yep, I heard you: “no one buys an Aston Martin to get a fancy touchscreen!” Fair enough, but technology has, for better or worse, become one of the yardsticks used to measure luxury cars and the DBX falls short here. It’s fitted with what’s essentially an older Mercedes-Benz infotainment system, meaning one controlled by a touchpad and a dial rather than a touchscreen. It’s bulky and unintuitive; the DBX deserves better, especially since there are some cool features and menus stuffed into the software.

https://o.aolcdn.com/images/dims3/GL...bx-707-561.jpg

Power comes from a twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8. It’s the familiar eight-cylinder that Aston Martin borrowed from Mercedes-AMG to drop into several of its models, including the regular DBX, but here it’s tuned to develop 697 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (or 707 pferdestärke – hence the name) and 663 pound-feet of torque at 4,500 rpm. Enthusiasts familiar with AMG’s V8 cookbook will recognize that no in-house recipe yields these numbers, and that’s because this is a British recipe, not a German one.

“The Mercedes-Benz technology transfer agreement is very important for us, and this is one of the outcomes. We were able to make several refinements to the engine. The agreement also gives us the leverage to be much quicker to the market,” said Aston Martin boss Tobias Moers. Importantly, and this is not a coincidence, his last job was running the very company that designed the engine: AMG. His gravitational pull was strong enough to bring a few key people with him to England, including Ralph Illenberger. He’s now Aston Martin’s head of powertrain having previously been AMG’s head of engine development.

Tokley explained that some of the changes made in-house include fitting turbochargers equipped with ball bearings instead of journal bearings. Software and calibration tweaks entered the equation as well.

From the crankshaft, the V8’s cavalry reaches the four wheels via a nine-speed automatic transmission linked to beefy shift paddles, an active transfer case, an upsized carbon fiber driveshaft (which doesn’t have a center bearing in order to save weight), and an electronic limited-slip rear differential with a final drive ratio that’s 7% shorter than the standard DBX’s. Hitting 60 mph from a stop consequently takes 3.1 seconds, a number that becomes even more impressive when you take into account the 4,940-pound mass that the engine needs to lug around. The nine-speed automatic keeps up with the pace by delivering quick, crisp shifts, either on its own or manually. The shift paddles are even larger than those in the regular DBX, and are made of carbon fiber rather than metal.

Aston Martin lets you choose how loudly the DBX 707 comes to life. For the standard exhaust note, simply push the “engine start/stop” button located on the dashboard, between the buttons used to put the transmission in gear. To turn it up, which I highly recommend, keep the left shift paddle pulled as you push the ignition button. The difference in decibels is perceptible, both inside and out. The V8’s song is worth turning down the audio system for, and Aston Martin spent a great deal of time fine-tuning it. Moers, a man whose love of great-sounding engines is well documented, personally weighed in on it.

Unless you’re a current Aston Martin owner, the brand’s long-standing automatic shifter location takes a little bit of time to get used to; your hand instinctively reaches for the center console. But, once you’re off, you’re off. The DBX’s acceleration is nearly instantaneous, which is surprising because the engine’s full horsepower and torque outputs aren’t available until 6,000 and 4,500 rpm, respectively. There is so much of both under your right foot that the engine curve matters far less than it does in a car with, say, 150 horsepower. At full throttle, the DBX delivers the type of gut-twisting acceleration associated with a supercar. Try launch control once, and I’ll bet the cost of my test car’s optional 23-inch wheels (that’s $5,100, by the way) that you’ll immediately stop to do it again.

The chassis improvements came to life on twisty Sardinian roads. This is not a light car, and it never feels like one, but dialing in a 52% front and 48% rear weight distribution ensures it’s not as front-heavy as you’d expect. It’s reasonably well balanced, especially considering the segment that it competes in. The air suspension and 48-volt anti-roll control keep body motions in check, and the massive tires unlock a reassuring (and almost supernatural!) level of grip. Bend after bend, the DBX 707 delights with precise, well-weighted steering … until I come out of a sharp right-hander, foot half-buried in the throttle, and realize I’m barreling towards a group of goats chilling in the middle of the road. That’s where the standard carbon ceramic braking system comes in. Rest assured: the DBX passed the goat avoidance test with flying colors.

https://o.aolcdn.com/images/dims3/GL...-dbx-707-3.jpghttps://o.aolcdn.com/images/dims3/GL...-dbx-707-4.jpg

On straighter, faster roads where the odds of encountering cheese-producing livestock are lower, the DBX 707 is a pleasant and comfortable car to cruise in. Like the regular DBX, actually, the 707’s wild side is entertaining, but it knows how to be calm when the occasion calls for it. It’s also quiet thanks in part to remarkably thick windows. Only the V8’s song permeates the cabin. Some of it comes from the speakers, though Tokley stresses that the actual exhaust note is being piped through rather than a fake sound emitted by a synthesizer. For the braver souls among us, there’s an off-road mode that increases the ground clearance.

Due out in the second quarter of 2022, the 2023 Aston Martin DBX 707 starts at $239,086 including a massive $3,086 destination charge, and the $300,000 threshold is effortlessly reached when you begin ticking option boxes – my tester cost $291,586. At this stage, what are you really cross-shopping the DBX 707 with? Any of the other family haulers that cost nearly a quarter of a million dollars, sure, but you could also get a used Cessna or buy a cabin in a picturesque part of the Alps and a four-wheel-drive Dacia Duster to get there. That’s the point: the heart crushes the brain in this equation. No one needs a 697-horsepower SUV, but the acceleration, the sound, the design, and the luxury make you want one. Cast in this light, ground clearance and seat count be damned: the DBX 707 is a modern supercar.

DBX707 is now fitted as standard with the Aston Martin Premium Audio 800W 14 speaker audio system. Developed utilising advanced hardware, this system features a surround sound mode with QuantumLogic® surround sound processing for a totally immersive soundscape.

However, true audiophiles will delight in the optional system developed with Aston Martin's audio partner, Bowers & Wilkins. Acoustically engineered to the DBX707's interior volume and shape, this exceptional system uses technologies and innovations found in Bowers & Wilkins acclaimed world-class loudspeakers. Aluminium Double Dome tweeters and Continuum® midrange speakers give this 23-speaker, double amplified 1,600W surround sound system a balanced and accurate sound. Dedicated 3D headline speakers, bass speakers and a powerful subwoofer deliver a powerful and dynamic sound experience, reflecting the characteristics of DBX707 itself.

DBX707, the latest in the core model line-up to behold the new Aston Martin Wings, also introduces a number of detail changes to the exterior. Foremost amongst these are five new paint colours; Epsilon Black, Helios Yellow, Sprint Green, Malachite Green, and Aura Green - plus the addition of Podium Green, first exclusively available on DBX707 AMR23 Edition. Furthermore, there are two new wheel finishes; Satin Black on the 23" Fortis wheel and Copper Bronze on the 23" Forged wheel. Design of the 22" Sport, 23" Fortis and 23" Forged rims remain unchanged, with Silver, Gloss Black, Textured Black, Satin Black and Satin Black Diamond Turned finishes also available on selected wheels.

Other visible changes include new 'presenting' door handles, which power outwards when the car is unlocked, and new flush glass swivel-head door mirrors. Driven by the adoption of a more sophisticated Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), the new mirror design features improved fully integrated cameras to support the 3D parking camera functionality.

Unlike the old design, in which the adjustable mirror moved within the fixed outer shell, the new solution sees the whole mirror and shell assembly swivel as-one to provide adjustment. In addition to providing better camera packaging the flush-fit edge-to-edge mirror design maximises the size of the reflective surface for a greater field of view.

Underpinning this extensive suite of changes is the formidable hardware package for which the DBX707 is renowned. Star of the show is the 707PS/900Nm 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 and 9-speed 'wet clutch' automatic gearbox. Mated to a sophisticated all-wheel drive system capable of sending up to 100% of the torque to the rear axle on demand, the DBX707 can launch from 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds and achieve a top speed of 193mph. With braking power delivered by 420mm front and 390mm rear Carbon Ceramic brakes the DBX707 sits on 22" wheels as standard, with a choice of cast or forged 23" alloy wheels available as options.

Aston Martin engineers have further honed the DBX707's class-leading dynamics, the quest for continual improvement resulting in a new calibration for the electronic dampers and air springs. Implemented to increase transient body control, the resulting improvement in response, precision and driver confidence extends the DBX707's dynamic superiority in its Supercar of SUV's class.

Production of the new DBX707 is due to commence in Q2 of 2024, with first deliveries scheduled to begin in Q2.
