Move Over Initial D, Acura Announces New Anime Series Streaming From January 20

BY Sam D. Smith | Posted on January 18, 2022 2 A couple of weeks ago, we were happy to see Toyota embrace the AE86’s anime fame with a series of Initial D-inspired commercials for the GR86. If anything, they left car fans around the world clamoring for some more illustrated adventures within the Initial D universe.

But it appears that Acura may end up overshadowing the marketing efforts of Toyota’s department, as a sixteen-second teaser trailer for “Type S: Chiaki’s Journey” was released on
Acura’s social media pages.

"Precision without speed is empty; Speed without precision... chaos. You learn that, you can drive."

My favorite part is when she says "Money can't buy skill", and then jumps into a TLX Type S (and later an NSX). Uh huh.....

Driving Honda: Inside the World's Most Innovative Car Company

FWIW I'm reading this book currently, it's OK (not great but also not bad either) and from 2014. Gives a very comprehensive history of Honda up to current times for all products and it's business culture driven by Soichiro Honda and the other co-founder Takeo Fujisawa.

Finished this book, it was just OK. Got into the history of the company very well, their global operations independence and cultural philosophy (Three Joys and the continuous counter-point of their version of CPI). A decent read but I doubt the brain dead mechanic on this forum who thinks he worked for Acura (but actually only a dealership) would understand any of it especially that every Honda CEO since Soichiro was a engineer at the company originally.

American Honda Posts Strong March Sales with Slight Improvement in Product Supply

April 1, 2022
  • American Honda sales near 110,000 units, best since August 2021, on improved supply and sustained demand
  • Honda sets new monthly record for electrified vehicles on strong sales of CR-V Hybrid and Accord Hybrid
  • HR-V scored a 14th straight monthly sales record as March sales set a new all-time sales mark for any month
  • Acura posts best month since August 2021, with sales topping 13,000 units in March
  • Acura SUVs near 10,000 units based on best MDX sales since May 2021
  • Pre-sales of hot-selling new Type S model help Acura MDX flagship top 6,400 units in March
.

“Like much of the industry, we’re riding a bit of a roller coaster due to fluctuating parts supply issues, but strong March sales for Honda and Acura speak to the fact that demand remains strong and our retail deliveries are based primarily on what we can supply to our dealers,” said Dave Gardner, executive vice president of Business & Sales at American Honda. “We aren’t out of the woods yet, but we will continue to manage the supply issues to maximize production and help our dealers meet the needs of our customers.”

Honda Sales Highlights

While the award-winning Civic remains in extremely tight supply, stronger availability of hybrid-electric models contributed to the Honda brand posting relatively strong sales of nearly 95,000 units in March.
  • Higher gas prices and increased supply of CR-V Hybrid and Accord Hybrid help Honda set new monthly record for electrified vehicles (12,635)
  • HR-V set an all-time monthly sales record and a 14th straight monthly mark sustaining momentum for the April reveal of the all-new 2023 HR-V
  • CR-V posts best month since July 2021 with sales nearing 30,000 (29,943) units on improved supply and CR-V Hybrid’s best-ever sales month (6,932)
  • Accord nears 18,000 March sales on record month (4,857) for Accord Hybrid

Model Notes

- Honda will reveal the all-new sporty and versatile 2023 HR-V this month, the first of three new SUVs to be introduced this year.
- Six 2022 Honda models earned a TOP SAFETY PICK rating or better from IIHS, and all fully tested Honda vehicles earn NHTSA’s top NCAP crash-test ratings.

Acura Sales Highlights

Acura posted strong March sales topping 13,000 units based on strong sales of SUVs and the best month for Acura sedans since August 2021.
  • Acura SUV sales near 10,000 units, led by best sales month since May 2021 for MDX
  • Demand for TLX Type S help lead Acura sedan sales to nearly 3,300 units
  • Type S direction resonates with buyers, driving MDX, TLX and NSX Type S variants to strong March sales.

Model Notes

- First two months of manual transmission production is pre-sold, with over 75% of 2023 Integra pre-orders for the three-pedal model.
- Deliveries of MDX Type S have begun, the most powerful, best handling and best equipped Acura SUV ever.

If MDX-S and TLX-S demand and sales are so great, then Acura would break out the numbers and use the opportunity to brag about it and market the shit out of them. But they don't.

Pre-sales of hot-selling new Type S model help Acura MDX flagship top 6,400 units in March

Honda/Acura did a few sales reports ago with a simple statement, IIRC the Type-S makes up 1 of every 4 TLX's.

Went back to look. For October sales, they said "Acura TLX Type S creates strong demand, representing one-quarter of TLX October sales"

and for November sales, they said "Acura TLX Type S demand remains strong and continues to represent a quarter of TLX sales"

But no mention of what TLX-S sales are since which means they're now less than 25% of overall TLX sales. I mean, if they were still 25% (or more) or anywhere close to 25%, they'd Shirley want to say so, right?

I expect that ratio to change dramatically even if it is true, after the new model is no longer in his "honeymoon" period.

But this time next year... it would be in single digit...

I think i have seen 1 on the road so far.

TBH IDK, there are so many variant and trim levels of Honda's and Acura's I doubt they'll put notifications in telling which variants are selling at what rate so I don't read into no notification meaning the ratio is the same, better or worst. I expect it to remain roughly 1/4 ratio for the foreseeable future, as the Type-S came out earlier in 2021 so the hype was gone by the time that statement came out for the ratio.

In a letter sent to customers, GAC Acura announced it will cease both sales and production of its models starting next year. The move comes only six years after the Japanese brand has started its Chinese business in partnership with GAC. The sluggish sales were one of the reasons that prompted the cease of operations.
6 photos

Honda’s subsidiary failed to spark Chinese customers’ imagination, especially as the brand lacked the electrified models that the Chinese market wants. Acura entered the market in 2016 with the CDX, a crossover that was later joined by the China-only TLX-L sedan and the RDX. Annual sales peaked in 2019 when the brand sold 14,701 vehicles, but interest dwindled and the sales have plummeted to just 6,554 vehicles in 2021.

GAC Acura sold only two models after the TLX-L was discontinued, and this made it an easy target for German brands. The compact CDX stood little chance against the more popular BMW X1 and Audi Q3. Its bigger brother RDX also faced an uphill battle against the likes of Mercedes-Benz GLC and BMW X3.

Acura is not the first Japanese brand that fails to establish a foothold in the Chinese market. Nissan’s Infinity was also withdrawn in January, with all the operations absorbed under Dongfeng Nissan’s umbrella. This will also happen to Acura’s business, which will be integrated into GAC Honda. This includes GAC Acura employees and the services provided to existing GAC Acura customers, according to carnewschina.com.

The Chinese market increasingly favors sales of electrified vehicles, with Chinese brands holding a firm grip on the market. Japanese brands have been notoriously slow at adopting electrification and this has led to their downfall. Hopefully, the new partnership between Honda and General Motors will produce the badly needed electric vehicles.

Honda has already teased the Chinese customers with the e:NS1 concept based on the HR-V. We must stress that the Chinese have already mocked Honda’s efforts to attach the battery under the chassis of the car. They say the Chinese companies did that move more than 10 years ago and you know this is bad when you’re compared with a copycat industry from the past.

Acura's smallish global footprint gets even smaller. So much for Acura brand recognition, which is not much outside North America.

What a shocker.

Sure didn’t help that anyone who test drove a CDX and expected luxury probably wrote off the entire brand. Terrible first impression of the brand.

Acura will augment its competitiveness by adding local production of two other nameplates. In December, it plans to start local output of the TLX-L. Then, in 2018, it begins domestic production of the RDX, timed to the crossover's redesign and positioned to tap China's SUV boom.

Sales of the RDX alone should reach about 20,000 a year after local production kicks in, projects Tsuneyoshi Matsumura, manager of automobile sales for Acura in China.

"The AutoNews article referenced is speculative, and not based on confirmed plans or statements. While we can’t comment on future product plans, the recently introduced 2023 Integra will not be the last new ICE vehicle from Acura. Acura will play a critical role in Honda’s transition to electrified vehicles. In fact, as we announced last fall, Acura will lead American Honda’s transition to electrification and digitalization. This begins with an all-new full electric Acura SUV coming in 2024," an Acura spokesperson told The Drive.

Being based on the new Honda Civic Si, the 2023 Acura Integra is a sporty return to form for the brand that had veered more luxury in recent years...

Maybe Acura will bring back the Legend. And as with the Integra being a rebadged Civic, the Legend will be a rebadged Accord.

The sedan market is dead, especially the flagship "luxury" sedan from Acura that no one wants to buy. It is better to redirect the resources into EV and SUV products.

I am glad that Honda/Acura are 1 of the few brands left that do monthly reporting.

I wonder how much of the TLX and RDX sales decline is really due to supply issues vs. people just not wanting to buy them. Sedans are a bit out of vogue these days (yet the Integra seems to be doing quite well), and the RDX is showing its age. But how Acura analyzes that data will determine whether or not we get another TLX (or, in my dreams, RLX) and how much effort they put into the next-gen RDX.

I agree. While I always look forward to these monthly numbers, it's hard to really discern anything definitive. As mentioned are they selling everything they have on the lots and could sell more if they had them or are buyers going to different marques?? It's probably some sort of combination, but hard to know with all the variables.

There's no possibility that electric cars have taken over the turf which was traditionally Acura's. May be Tesla...?

Nah... no way.

It's interesting; Acura's clientelle in the past have been the more academic, tech-forward type that are too rational and sensible to buy a high-maintenance German car, but aren't so old and stuffy that they would buy a Lexus. Think, yuppies.

Seemingly every one of them now drives a Model 3 or Y. Go to any company parking lot in Silicon Valley and it might as well be a Tesla showroom.
