Maybe it's because it will have the next generation CRV chassis...I always thought new tech/equipment should debut on Acuras then trickle down to Honda - like VTEC did - it makes sense from a marketing perspective...

Crossover Dresser: Acura's RD-X sport ute concept to make Detroit show debut - - Source: Autoweek
Acura’s going crossover with it’s upcoming RD-X Concept, set to make its first appearance on the world stage at this year’s Detroit show. The concept will loosely represent a look at Acura’s upcoming SUV, set go on sale in 2006 and likely to slot below the MD-X in pricing as a Acura’s entry-level sport ute. The goal, like many crossover-type vehicles, is to combine sports sedan performance with the added space and other attributes people crave in SUVs.
Acura is said to be packing plenty of performance and technology bits into the RD-X Concept. The vehicle’s styling features a wide track and bold fender flares. On the inside, the wood and leather interior is ‘based on the feeling of an upscale loft apartment’ according to Acura.

Cost Drivers!!!!
i wouldn't be suprised to see a high output version of the IMA in the RDX which eventually will be placed into the TSX to power the SH-AWD and then the TL and then the RL\MDX.

If you look at an enlarged picture, for example on Canadian driver, the cut lines for the doors and hatch are interesting - its still a concept though...

As much as I have loved all of the Acura sketches since the rsx introduction, none have been realistic. The lastest, RL, is case and point.
I wouldn't expect the rdx too be more exciting than the current mdx, nicer interior than the crv, hopefully a little more upscale than the tsx at a price I would guess around 29k.

Sketches sure, but I think based on recent past what we see in "concept" at the auto show this time is likely to be pretty darn close. I am psyched to see this thing.

Looking forward to seeing the interior, hope it pushes the limits of design where Acura seems to really excel. If it has this 3/4 rear view from canadiandriver with a tsx front end it will be pretty damn cool, but from the sketches it looks like a sedan hatchback. Exterior reminds me of a 4 door opel astra

Nice lil sketch. If they can manage to adhere to both the interior and exterior sketches, it'll be another runaway success for them. It'll eat up (sales wise, that is) both the X3 and X-Class, IMO. Still missing that V8 flagship, though.

Now any word leaking about the drivetrain?... could we see SHAWD?... 3rd row seating... or some sort of flexible seating configuration?

Why would u see 3rd row seating in a smaller than mdx vehicle? 2nd, who cares if it has shawd, what are you going to do laps in a cute ute? God, I hope shawd doesn't take on the bs meaning vtec has.

Everything I have heard is that it will be a very performance oriented SUV. It will be equipped with the SH-AWD system as well as high HP (240-260) five passenger. Slated to hit showrooms late fall of 05. All info is subject to change.

One thing to keep in mind is target price ... if it is gonna be 30K, let's all don't hold expectations above and beyond the 40K current MDX. It's also pretty much impossible to think it'll have a 3rd seat unless the MDX goes HUGE on the next redesign. This thing being CRV based should give an idea on size and my guess is IMA is a long'ish shot at first, with SH-AWD being unlikely for a 30K sport SUV

It is supposed to be performance oriented so why not SHAWD... that would make perfect sense... from all indications it will not be a "cute ute" but a crossover type of performance sporty suv-wagon.
Of course until we see the darn thing everything is speculation.

I will return from a two-week jaunt to the Far East in time for the NAIAS - will try to post pics in a timely fashion.

Crappy cell phone pic
Found a link to this on VTEC.net. Somebody attended a event and sneaked a few crappy cell phone pics.

Front end looks like the TSX and MDX had a kid. The height seems like a tall wagon or crossover rather than the CR-V height,
