2007 Buick Park Avenue(China)
The new Buick Park Avenue was formally unveiled in Shanghai yesterday, and there's a lot of new media out in support of it. First off, clicking the image above will bring you to a high-res photo gallery of the Chinese-built Park Ave, which is based on Holden's long-wheelbase WM Stateman and Caprice. As the interior photos show, the cabin has been dressed up extensively, with tasteful use of wood on the wheel, dash and rear snack trays. As with the superb-looking Cadillac SLS, the Park Ave is geared toward the backseat passengers. The car's available engines are built at Holden's engine manufacturing facility in Victoria and shipped to China for installation. As you might have expected, Buick has called upon one Tiger Woods to star in the first television commercial for the new Park Ave. You can watch it after the jump, as well as read the latest press release.
GM Holden today announced plans to export Global V6 engines to China. Two versions of the Global V6 engines will be fitted in the new Buick Park Avenue being built by Shanghai General Motors.
The new engine export program is expected to be worth several hundred million dollars to GM Holden over the next few years.
The Buick Park Avenue, unveiled to media in Shanghai last night, will utilise both the 3.6L V6 engine and a unique 2.8L V6, both being built at the GM Holden's state-of-the-art Engine Operations plant in Victoria.
The new Buick - which will be built at Shanghai GM's Jinqiao plant - is the first vehicle to go into production outside Australia utilising the global rear-wheel drive architecture developed by GM Holden. The vehicle will have an exterior based on the Holden Statesman with the interior completely redesigned by GM China to suit the local market.
GM Holden's specialist rear wheel drive engineering expertise has also been called upon to engineer the car to serve as a luxury limousine for rear seat passengers as distinct from the sports luxury, driver-orientated vehicle produced in Australia for domestic and export markets.
GM Holden Chairman and Managing Director, Denny Mooney, said, "The Buick Park Avenue is another exciting step in the worldwide adoption of the global rear-wheel drive architecture developed here in Australia and is a valuable export program for GM Holden in the world's fastest growing auto market.
"Our engine export program generated over $570 million in revenue in 2006 alone and this will be a further boost to this key area of our business.
"With today's announcement of these engine exports to Shanghai GM, our engine production plant in Victoria is supplying customers in markets as diverse as Italy, South Korea, Germany, Thailand, South Africa, Sweden and China.
"Australia's role in the forthcoming Chevrolet Camaro for the US market, and now the Buick Park Avenue for China, underlines how Australian design and engineering expertise is playing a lead role in General Motor's worldwide vehicle production."

That buick looks luxurious, what's up with all of the buttons on the rear armrest? media control & back massage settings?
NA is definitely getting the short end of the stick.

Wow! Why do even American companies give people overseas better cars than they offer in their own homeland?
Well, that Buick will be made in China though

What is wrong with US auto manufacturers?! Management has some SERIOUS problems, and no matter who is brought in, the scene here in their home market NEVER changes. It just amazes me that they wonder why they are all on the verge of bankruptcy; well, here is a perfect reason. BRING US THESE GOOD PRODUCTS! As of right now, all of the models that American manufacturers are marketing to the U.S. SUCK! There's always an import model that blows the domestic competition out of the water.
However, whenever I see a model that some other international market gets, from a US nameplate, it ROCKS! Take this Park Avenue for example (a Holden Caprice, essentially). I'm 20 years old and would in no way be embarassed to purchase this Buick. It looks really nice, has an incredible interior that looks to be of high quality. Yet we'll never see it.
US manufacturers: listen up. You sure as hell better start bringing some of these advanced international products to your home market, or your demise is sure to be final. I guarantee it.

I like my GTO and by association I like GM. But if they keep screwing US over like this, the GTO will be the last GM car I buy and I will never buy another GM and tell my kids to never buy GM and tell them to tell their kids to never buy GM.

Yeah I agree though GM wants to make buicks appear to younger people yet they make cars that look like you have to be 60 to drive. Now granted im not old enough to buy that car I bet a lot of 30 year olds would thats diffenently the nicest buick ever made.

The Daewoo version is a rebadge of the Statesman. The interior's the same. I was happy to see that Buick spent the time and effort to create a completely unique and luxurious interior for it's Chinese flagship.

I'm just totally speculating here, but it could make sense...with anti-Japanese sentiment in China seemingly growing, the US-automaker could see this as an opening to quickly take advantage of that and make something attractive to a market that's gaining more and more disposeable income...?

I have been to China several times the last couple of years, and it's amazing how Buick and GM are doing there. GM's management in China definitely has fresh ideas and aren't bound by the old image in the U.S. market.
In general, the Chinese market is huge and totally different, and American companies are doing an outstanding job catering to the local taste. Foods served at KFC and McDonalds are delicious; people sit at expensive Starbucks for hours and nobody would imagine a drive through. Sam's club and Walmart are clean, organized and feel upscale.
With the population in China and crowded streets, I think the level of luxury in cars is far more important than the sportiness. Even the cheapest cars have leather seats (of course the quality of leather can vary a lot). I think BMW's 5 series is being made in China, but the 3 series isn't.
yea the DAEWOO L4X looks very sharp also.
Here's the interior of Buick Lucerne. What can you say? Ouch. I guess GM doesn't want to alienate its core customers.

Coming to America
While all the news from Buick as of late has been in regards to new smaller models and a move down-market, the GM luxury brand is also planning a new flagship model. Targeted at the Lexus LS, the team at GMInsideNews has confirmed from sources inside GM that an early design for the new model has been approved and the team responsible for the car has been given a limited budget to continue developing the idea.
This new model would be based on the Premium Zeta architecture, much like the proposed (but not yet confirmed) Cadillac XTS. In order to keep these 2 models from competing too closely with each other, the Buick model would target the Lexus LS, while the Cadillac would be poised to take on the sportier BMW 7 Series.
Currently Buick does have a flagship sedan based on the Zeta architecture – sold in China as the Park Avenue. There’s a possibility that this new model could also replace the Chinese Park Avenue and bring back the Park Avenue name to North America.

I find this article odd. The XTS Concept was on a larger version of the Epsilon platform. The production version is set for that too, and even GM admitted that this vehicle won't be a real flagship, but a mid-luxury jumbo car like the current DTS.
The Park Avenue rides on the Zeta, and while I REALLY hope it happens, it would be surprising for a similarly priced Buick to be the RWD car.
