2006 BMW 3 Series Brochure
The link below shows the new 3 series in a PDF brochure. Unfortunately, I think it is in Dutch. Can someone who reads Dutch translate the highlights? Anyway, it has great exterior and interior photos. Looks like it will have the infamous I-Drive and keyless push button start.
I plan on buying a car in 2006 and I have limited my options to the 2006 BMW 330i, Acura TL or Lexus IS350. I am leaning toward one of the japanese automakers mainly because I think they would be more reliable, but I will try to be open minded?
Which of these 3 cars would you choose?

218 HP out of 2.5L, inline-6 or not, is pretty darn good. 258 out of 3.0L is wonderful. So would the new 325 take the TSX? I was never a fan of this size car, but the new A4 and the TSX's release changed my opinion. Of course I ended up recommending a TSX to my parents as my 1st car, but the new 3 Series has broadend my view. I always used to see the 3-Series, C-Class, etc. as a cheap way to get into the Luxury brands (no offense intended, by cheap I mean the easiest way), but the redesigned C, 3, A4, and the up coming IS (although the design cues from pictures I've seen show 9-3, TL, TSX into 1 package, typical Toyota) have completly changed my outlook. I bet the IS will be a great car, but this new 3 looks great. Too bad the Germans can't beat Toyota and Honda reliability though.

Are German horses stronger than Slovenian (and Japanese) horses?

Guess is the 15% power increase is the Valvetronic. If so, I'm not sure I'd want to be the first kid on my block to have one. Since the e90 is bigger than the e46, it will probably be pricier. I'm also more than a little put off buy the '70s Buick dashboard, the iDrive, the active steering and the Bangle-ized exterior styling. Luddites all hated the e46 when it was first introduced, tho. I suppose we all have time to get used to this since e90 production isn't supposed to start until next Spring!

A lot of things can happen between now and 2006. There could be whole nother car in the mix by then. A little too early for this. The IS is a virtual unknown at this time.

Am I reading that right...it comes with a 6speed automatic? Looks like BMW's raising the bar again.

Wow, 7 speed. But I would be more wowed if MB offered it in their C-Class, like how BMW is offering the 6-speed in their 3-Series.

After examining the pictures on those brochures, I've decided that I'm still not a fan of the new direction that BMW is going with its design language. The problem is that the designs are too busy with too many elements colliding together. There's no flow to the look. This is a design that will not last long in this market.

Hmm. Looks... OK. It might grow on me. Which is more than I can say for the new 7, or esp. the 5 (unless you mean grow like gangrene that you want to amputate). Stats are in line with what I was expecting, which should propel the car with the 2.5L engine ahead of the TSX again and make more worth what it'll cost.

that new 3 series is tight. i would go with the perennial benchmark of sport sedans. plus it holds its value, and has just the right amount of snob appeal. i head the new 3 will scoot to 60 in about 6.0 secs, and will of course have awesome handling. i think the design isnt as divisive as say the 5 or 7 series (and i like bangle's touch, better than playing it safe (hear me toyota?)).
the drawback to the 3 would be its ubiquity, everyone and their brother owns one. but if u have the cash, u can customize that baby. if u load one up to the gills, expect to pay about 10k more than a tsx, believe that.
wish the tsx had a start engine button. sigh.... the grass is always greener....

0-60 in approx. 6 seconds from a 3.0L...very impressive.

The "brochure" is a well documented marketing hoax, a way for BMW to "leak" the information without actually officially releasing it. Mainly to curb any defections to the "other" brands on fear of a pure Banglesque car.
BMW continues to build some amazing engines across its range from excellent oil burners to pavement pounding 500 hp v10s. (100hp/L, is great from a 4 banger but awe inspiring from a 10 pot!)

The direct competiton for the TSX will be the 325. With the same 6 speed tranny out of the 330 and a bump to 215 HP it should be able to hold its own in 0-60 times (probably around 7 s). It always did well in the twisties so that is probably a given on the E90 325. And with the growth in the wheelbase, the rear seats and trunk may have grown enough to be on some people's list that considered it too small before.
