Funny thing is, TL comes out in 1999 with HiD Bulbs and than projectors hit the market shortly after and than everyone prays to get Projectors on the new TL (We know we will), now for the next Gen we have to pray for LED Headlights, its funny Technology never stops and theres always something cooler and better out there
By the way all those pics are of the Lexus HPX Concept, they were posted to show how they will be on the New GS if it comes out with L.E.D. Lights

I have to admit... I am depressed that Lexus has no plans to release the HPX. :'(
Although the styling is blatantly similar to the Infinity FX, it still is a piece of beauty. With Lexus' reputation for interior quality, reliability, and customer service, that would be one crossover to drool over...
I can't wait to see the new GS...

Well, IMHO, I think we won't see LED headlights in the new GS. We might see it eventually...but I don't know if we'll see it this soon. Then again, watch me eat my words in a few months...
I think the LEDs on the HPX were just for the concept "whoop-di-de-doo" factor...kind of like no windshield wipers or rearview mirrors on the TL.
Then again, who knows? LED flashlights are quite common nowadays and they're rather effective (or is it affective?) They give off plenty of light and look a lot like an HID/Xenon light.
So now, I'm just confused

Doesn't the pics of the 04 TL from Seattle show amber turn lights in the TL's headlights that look like they're LED? I think that's the type of use LEDs could possibly have in any sort of headlights. They're bright, but not bright enough to illuminate the road ahead the way traditional lights do.

PS--Just for the record, the concept didn't even have LEDs as turn-indicators in the headlamp cluster. They used neon tubes, if I remember correctly.

Anyways, I looked back at the pictures and you're right, it doesn't appear to be LEDs for the amber lights.

whatever the new GS looks like, i don't think it will look like any of those pics. those are just pics of the HPX concept. it will probably have the some sort of dual headlight treatment like the current generation. i think LED headlights are still have a long way to go before they are put on production cars.

Ok, at Light Fair in NYC last summer (a big time Lighting Show with all the major, and not so major, lightmakers present) (not a car show), I saw many applications of LED based lights that are replacing halogen or standard bulbs, they are just as bright and are just as good in terms of beam pattern as standard lights. These replacements for std bulbs are available now, and bigest application is MR16 Halogen replacments (just as bright, better color renditionin, and a lot less HEAT).
LED head lights WILL be out in the next 2-3 years. This was confimred at the show by several MAJOR makers of LEDS (PHILIPS/Lumiled and a GE/LED maker cooperation).
Samples of the car headlights were there along with full replicas of living spaces all illumintated by LED's. It did not look out of place and had color renditioning similar to incandescent / halogen and Xenon/HID lights depending on what color temperature (in degrees Kelvin) you picked for the white LED's.
The car headlight had a pattern similar to a Xenon/HID unit that was there for comparison, and very similar color (more on the white side, like BMW's HID lights vs the blue on the Acura's).
The LED headlights are made up of multiple LED clusters so that the intensity and beam pattern of the light meets the needs of drivers.
also, there has been talk of making addaptive headlights even better, as a portion of the LEDs would re-aim to the direction that the car is turning, while the remaining ones can still stay straight ahead, not easily done with single bulb head lights.
Here is a web sight for the leading maker of high powered LED's (in cooperation with PHILIPS Lighting):

While the web site does not have any photos of LED head ligths, it is only a mater of time (and they state that) before one reaches production. Many hi-tech show cars use LED head lights, so you can see the makers are thinking about it.

From Lycos photos, it looks like the black/smoke lensed amber light is LED and so is the red side marker in the back.
