Four Honda/Acura products on the list. . . that's not so good. I guess that why Colin was saying that Honda beefed up their quality control on the new 05 TSX (resulting in the delay of '05s).

Did else anyone follow the links to the NHTSA website? I entered 97 Subaru Impeza (a car I used to own) and the list of consumer complaints seemed fairly petty. Granted there was the occassional legitmate safety issue but most things could have easily been worked out with the dealer. Someone actually wrote in to bitch that too much snow gets caught up under his wheel well.
The main complaint about the 2004 TSX seems to be that issue with the driver's seat moving around.

Something is fishy with those numbers. Honda only sells 7-8k S2000s a year, yet they had over 5000 lemon law cases for them in 2004? Rarely do people on S2ki.com have any serious issues with their cars.
EDIT: Nevermind, that number is not the number of cases, but some index relative to the number of vehicles sold.

When it comes to the index, one also has to take into consideration that Acura gets a large number of customers that (in the world of fixed operations for Acura dealers) fall under the "Granola OP-code." They complain about the dumbest little things on their cars.
Examples:
When not used to tires equipped with silicon rather than steel belts (like the TL is), complaints arise like "My tires feel like their pulsating." Even if they have been informed that heat desipation has to occur early in the first few miles of each driving day in order to make these belts overlap.
"My engine makes a whirring sound when at speed." referring to the characteristic note of a K-series engine. "Why can't you get rid of that sound?"
The "Granola OP-code" refers to this group of people because it contains the same ingredients: fruits, flakes, and nuts.

A lousy "characterstic" of the TSX is the jerk you get when lightly getting back on the throttle after coasting. Still annoying as hell to me. But, when I drove with the tech at the dealership, he never noticed it until I pointed it out. So, who knows, maybe that didnt fall under the Granola code

There's probably a socioeconomic factor here in that middle to upper class folks are going to complain about smaller problems in their more expensive vehicles. Some of this is justified (if you pay alot for a car, you expect alot) but some of it is also probably unreasonable expectations.
People with less money probably don't care as much if their car rattles like a rattlesnake, as long as it gets them to work, etc.
Lastly, richer folks are more likely to know about the lemon law and also more likely to have an attorney as a friend who can help them through the process.
A breakdown in the type of complaint (major engine/tranny repair vs. less serious offenses rattles, radio, a/c, etc.) would be interesting as well

i used the lemon law in CA and i'm definitley not rich - i found out all the info on 1 or 2 websites that directed me to a lawyer --in CA if you have a good case and the manufacturer ends up settling, the lawyers fees are paid for by the manufacturer (it cost about $100-$200 for the lawyer to draft a letter) it was pretty painless and anyone with $200 bucks can do it if they have real problems.
my wife and i didn't have unreasonable expectations...we owned a 2000 vw jetta 1.8t that was in the shop 3 to 4 times a month - at vw service dept - they have so many cars in for repair you have to schedule months in advance and bring your car in as soon as the place opens in the am and leave it there the whole day - this gets to be a real pain in the ass especially considering the car was brand new! Not to mention our car got dented and scratched while in for repairs more than a couple times (each time we'd have to argue with the dealer to have them fix it - which in turn = more time in shop)
our car had engine problems (they never fixed - they would diagnose it differently ever time), it had rattles, the stereo had to be replaced, the speakers all blew out (which is hilarious because my wife listened mainly to npr at about volume 2), the air conditioner was poorly disigned and smelled like rotten eggs because of mold caused by condensation that couldn't drain, not to mention manufacturer recalls (engine coils, and numerous other recalls - we continue to get new recalls for that car even though we don't own it anymore)
in our case - it came down to feeling the product we purchased was defective and we simple got tired of wasting our time correcting their problems.
