04 TL vs. 04 G35 sedan

This is just my personal opinion, but I think the G35 sedan could beat the 04 TL even if the TL has 270 hp now. The G35 sedan has 260hp, but has 260lbs of torque and I know the TL has 245lbs of torque, plus the RWD G35 could is better than a FWD TL, am I right? Maybe Acura should bring back the CL-type S and rename it a 2 dr TL to compete with the G35 coupe.

Where the G35 is raw, the TL is refined. G35 is the 100m sprinter, TL the 800m runner. I guess it just boils down to what the person wants.

TL has 238 lbs torque I think, not 245.

The G35 sedan has the edge in performance numbers (e.g., 0-60, skidpad, braking, etc.), but it truly is only a slight one, when you take all of the reviews into account. Now, how it FEELS when performing... that's a personal preference. Btw - the G35 gets even worse mileage than the TL, and I've seen reports as low as ~15 or 16 mpg in the TL dependingon the driving conditions. Now add AWD in the G35x and you basically have an SUV in terms of gas mileage (though lots more fun to drive!).

The performance difference is so slight, you would not likely see a difference on the street. Then, it's a matter of interior, features, styling and brand.

G35 I admit has a slight power advantage and the handling I think is a tie, but taking into account the interior, features, quality, technology, and all the other cool stuff in 04 TL.

I say the 04 TL wins..

Anyways I dont like the looks of the G35 Sedan, the Coupe is a diff story!

I use the "how the car looks when the clearcoat has worn out" test and the "how the car looks when it's dirty" test.

When dirty or the clearcoat is worn, the coarse. crude G35 sedan looks unsightly. It's really THAT bad.

You should intern for Car and Driver, they need more people like you. How often are you personally going to see the benefits of RWD? How about never. You are much more likely to see the benefits of more features, a lower car payment, faster 0-60 times, better braking, winter traction, and much better looks both inside and out.

BTW, the TL does just barely out-perform the G35. Here are the figures from the March 2004 issue of C/D:

TL G35
0-60 5.8 6.3
1/4 mile 14.5 14.6
Braking, 70-0 160 164
Roadholding 0.89 0.90
Lane Change 62.3 63.8

Impressive.

Clearly, the G35 exterior is worse. I cringe when I see it on the road. I am serious. I have nothing personal against the car, but whenever I see one on the road, I cringe. There is NOT ONE SINGLE THING RIGHT about anything on the exterior. I want to like it like the G35 coupe. It almost looks pleasing. But every single aspect of the exterior is just a little screwed up. There's not a single element done right. You add it all together and it has to be one of the ugliest exteriors on the market at ANY PRICE.

I'm completely serious. Make a list of the ugliest cars on the market and then get a close up of those cars along with the G35 sedan. There is something EVIL about that exterior. It seems to have every piece of Nissan TACKINESS ever devised all in one package. The weirdest thing about it is that it ALMOST looks good. You guys know what I'm talking about?

Let me put it another way.

When you buy the TSX, you don't spend a second second guessing its looks. You spend all your energy admiring it.

When you buy the G35 coupe, you spend most of your time admiring it, but occasionally something causes you to do a double-take, such as the grille or the rear bumper from the 3/4 rear view.

When you buy the TL, you sometimes find yourself analyzing, wondering about a few things, such as the 3/4 rear view or the back view and the taillights.

When you buy the G35 sedan, you always find yourself analyzing this and that, trying to convince yourself that it looks just fine, and wondering if you should have bought the G35 coupe.

Man, you've bought a lot of cars in the last year! I know IF I WERE to buy a TL, I wouldn't spend a second second guessing its looks. I'd spend all my energy admiring it. I'd never buy a G35.

Obviously looks are subjective. There must be a lot of folks who like the looks of the G based on its sales. For enthusiast nothing short of a RWD platform will do, in which case they won't even look at the TL. Once one decides that the platform layout does not matter, I think the TL gets the edge.

too bad there's no tangible way to measure balance, feedback, confidence and general fun to drive where the G35 and 3 series give the TL a beating and are more important to raw numbers. numb steering, lack of balance due to 60/40 weight distribution, torque steer and general lack of confidence when driven hard destroys any numerical comparisons. eg. you pull 0.90 g's comfortably or pull it while feeling like you are holding on for dear life

Did you see that link I posted that dispels the notion the TL has torque steer? Fascinating.

Is that the best you can come up with? You're slipping, gilbo!

I'd have to say that the TL definitely wins over the G35 sedan in looks. The G35 coupe is a nice car, but if Acura were to develop a new CL similar to the photochop that someone did over on A-CL, then that may be in contention.

As for gilbo, I yet again ask if he has actually driven the TL?

I recently test drove the TL and G35 sedan back to back and I must admit, the TL feels a lot more planted. The G35 tends to feel less solid and refined in day to day driving chores. Personally, I'd love for the chance to drive these cars back to back out at Willow Springs or Buttonwillow.
