Post Whats diff. between 4ohm and 8ohm???

When I purchased my Rockford Subs, the salesrep told me to go with 8ohm subs if I were going to run more than one on the same amp. He said that 2 4ohm subs would sound horrible. I ended up purchasing the 2 8ohm Rockfords. Is this true???

He's really suggesting that you wire the two 8-ohm speakers in parallel making it a 4-ohm load to the amp.

On most amps, 4-ohms mono is the most the amp can handle. A lot of higher-end amps however can handle 2-ohm mono (which you would get if you bought & wired the two 4-ohm subs). Also, the lower the ohms, typically the more wattage your amp will put out. Of course, it'll run a little hotter too.

Regarding the answer to your question, it really depends on the capabilities of your amp.

What do you mean by wiring it in parallel??? I have a 4 ch. amp and im running it bridged to 2 ch. Im running each sub on its own channel. Is this what you are talking about???

If you have a 4 channel amp bridged to run in 2 channel, you should've gotten 4 ohm subs.

Most people run subs with a 2 channel amp bridged. Parallel means both subs' speaker leads go to the same output on the amp, meaning it both run off the same bridged channel. I would suggest you to return your subs and get 4 ohm.

Lets say when you bridged your 4 channel amp into 2 channel, it puts out 100 watts a 4 ohm. If you run a 8 ohm sub, your amp will only put out 50 watts. If you run a 2 ohm sub, if you have a very very high quality amp, your amp might put out 200 watts.

I hope you didn't fail right out of high school physics. Running your wires in parallel, as apposed to a series circuit. In a series circuit you just wire everything up next to each other, on the same wire! Using a parallel circuit, you use multiple wires to wire everything together, basically they share power. They wire your house in parallel, just in case one light bulb blows out, all your other electrical appliances won't.

Well since you have a 4-channel amp bridged to two channels, then I agree with AcuraTL and get the 4-ohm subs instead.

Just curious, what kind of amp do you have?

I love all this electronics talk. I'm an electrical engineering major. We learn all this circuit analysis in school, but here's a real practical application for it.

Yup, never use a speaker setup with lower resistance than your amp can handle.

Ok, I returned the pair of 200watt 8ohm RF punch 2's and I purchased a pair of 400watt 4ohm RF Punch XLC's. Much cleaner and deeper bass
