What components have good bass?

Hey guys, I am looking to get some new speakers to put in my car. Currently I have some Kenwood Excelon components in front and some Excelon 6X9's in back. They are about a year old. But what I don't like about them is that they don't have any bass. Nowhere near as much as the stock BOSE do.

Mostly I listen to thrash or death metal and sometimes some old rap like Too Short, E-40 and some 70's and 80's R&B.

What do you guys recommend on speakers that have good bass, about as much as the BOSE, and fairly good sound quality? I need to stay around $300 for the fronts. And about $250 or so for the rears. Thanks for your help.

Just did an install with Focal utopia 165W 6.5" component set in custom kick panels. The midrange is unbelievable. Keep in mind, though, that the mids are in a totally sealed enclosure except for the 1/4" breathing hole that the wires run out of. These are not the speakers in your price range, but my point is that you can make a lot of different mids sound great in the right environment.

Here's a couple pics, and NO, we didn't install those ghetto switches and all that crappy wiring you see. Poor guy got a shotty install somewhere else before he came to us.....

Yeah, I was looking at the Focal Poly Kevlars or the one right below it. But I don't want to get a kickpanel like that, just in the stock holes.

What amp will you be using to power the fronts?

Hey Street how do those utopias sound in kicks? Is the tweeter sibilant at all?

I currently have utopias located in the stock location, and they def have a good amount of bass. Other comps that I've heard that have good bass are Dyns, and Rainbows. I also hear CDTs have really nice midbass. You dont have to buy the highend comps. Focal has a set that has great midbass. They are the 165k2s.

Beat me to it. My HD63s have an amazing amount of mid-bass. And I'm only pushing 60 watts to them. My sub was out of my car for the longest time and people didn't believe me when I told them that the bass was coming from the door speakers.

C'mon Ron don't you remember my install?

I can attest, the Focal 165Ws do have awesome midrange...since I blew my amp, they are all I've been running, and they sound great.

Mantis,

Where do you have the Utopias installed? Stock locations? Kickpanels? Let me know.

Will you be using that for both front and rear or is the entire amp going to be available just for the fronts? All the speakers mentioned would be a good choice for you. Some of them wouldn't fit in your budget but I would suggest spending a little more on your fronts and less on the rears. Are your doors deadened at all? Cause you know, I have a shop pack of Cascade VB-2 for sale (ask NSXNEXT how well this stuff works) .

I'll be using the amp for the fornt and rears. For the rears, I'll just keep the Excelons for a while and see how it sounds. For the front's, even though it's a little over what I wanted to pay, I think those CDT's look pretty interesting. My doors aren't deadened yet, but I still have quite a bit of dynamat left.

You are not running a video setup right? Why not just get a nice sounding mid bass driver for the rears? Something along the lines of a CDT Cl-5 or Cl-6? Tune them waaay down until they sound just right for rear FILL duties. You can use the money you save towards your front stage, or you could forget the rear fill all together and get the CDT HD-62's and bia amp them. With the right crossover settings you could get a lot of sweet sounding mid bass with this set-up. What are you running for a headunit and sub?

No video setup for me.
I have an Alpine CDA-7878, and an Eclpise 10" Aluminum(forgot model #) with a Directed Audio 600D mono amp. This combo sounds very clean. You can definately tell it's are better than the cheaper subs. and people think it's 2 12's.

I was looking to get the HD-62's.
That's a good idea using some mid-bass for rear. Those CL-6X's look prety cool. What do you mean by tuning them down. Cutting out the high's?

since rear fill is really not necessary, I THINK he means to just basically put the volume down just so passengers in the rear could hear it.

Lots of people dont use rear fill, from what i have read, lots of people think it sounds better.

But of course its all subjective.

Personally, if i was in your boat, i would do what brian suggested, no rear fill, bi-amp the front components.
