Want to upgrade stock stereo system

Wassup guyz,

after reading through some posts in this forum, I'm totally lost. I don't know my head from my ass when it comes to audio stuff. Firstly I should mention that when upgrading my system, I would like to keep my stock head unit. I want to swap out the factory speakers, add an amp, and a nice 12 inch sub in the trunk.

Now my question, what do you all recommend? I tend to listen to my music quite loud, and I find that the stock system just doesn't sound right, past a certain point. The more you turn it down, the worse it sounds...it's almost like it sounds hollow. I want speakers that will make the car sound like a home theatre. Whatever I need to put in, I'm willing to do. Whether it be to add tweeters to the system, the put in a sweeeeet amp, and 12 inch sub with an awesome set of 4 speakers, I'm willing to put out the money.

I will be purchasing most of this stuff on ebay, and then bringing it to a shop to install.

Can some people give me a guide as to what I should get based on what I described above??? Remember, I want a lot of bass when I feel like it, but also a high quality sounding system for my everyday use.

Thanks

my system

gives me everything I want, and at times I LOOVEEE to crank it up with all types of music - the system is effortless. Yes there are better ones out there, but this is all I could afford while in college...I just got some Klipsch KLF-20's for my house - they put a big ass dent in my account..haha

anyway if you have any questions about anything pm me or email at newman8350@aol.com

later

Hey SC354,

I'm in pretty much the same boat as you. I dont know jack shit about this stuff either. I went to a store asking similar questions, because I need to keep my factory HU too, and I also thought the factory speakers probably weren't the best quality either, so I wanted those out, and then, like you, I want a throw a nice amp and a couple of quality 10's or 12's in the trunk. BUT, the fucker told me that if I wanted to keep my factory HU in the car, that I'd have to keep the factory speakers in there as well So then, I could only really add the amp and subs. I dont know if thats bullshit or not...

As far as brands, I hear Diamond or Orion is the way to go. I dunno though, everyone seems to have their favorite. But I think I'm liking the Diamonds.

I've just started to lurk at http://forum.sounddomain.com/ and they seem like they might be of some help. I plan reading up on some threads over there, as most of our questions have probably been fully answered over there...

Whatever you do, let us know what your final decision is, cuz I'm interested to know too...A nice system will be one of my next summer mods here...

And feel free to chime in here people... Is that BS or what? That, if you dont change the HU, you can't change the speakers? Cuz our (all) factory speakers kinda suck dont they?

that guy is totally wrong!!! our cars are a little more complicated than most so most lazy ass installers dont want to mess with it, but it is possible...what you guys want to do. I just got a new headunit to avoid all the problems and to have much better sound.

A car audio shop that doesn't want to do a speaker swap w/o a HU change is just lazy. It can and has been done. Like OU Sig said, "..our cars are a little more complicated.."

I to want to get my speakers out and replace the sub. My goal is to look completely stock and replace the free air sub with another free air. I know, it won't sound as good but I don't want to lose any trunk space and I want a very stealthy install. To give you an idea of what I am considering.

Kicker 6 1/4 Component + Kicker 6 1/4 2-Ways + 8" Kicker Free Air Mid Bass Sub

or

Pioneer 6 1/4 Component + Pioneer 6 1/4 2-Way + 10" Pioneer Free Air Sub

Running off Alpine or Kicker Amps

Don't Forget to Bypass the EQ!!
