Upgrading Power Wire

This is in a 3G TL

As the Subject States... I'm going to be adding another Amplifier to my system... Do I need to upgrade my power wire from 4 gauge to 0/1 gauge???

I actually have a 1200W RMS monoblock D class amp for bass and a 4 channel Digital - 150W RMS per channel for Voice/midbass... and a 5 farad carbon alloy capacitor...

Side note: In previous cars I've had up to 3 amps pushing more wattage into the system and only had a 4 gauge power wire, but, that was in older cars with less Sophisticated electrical systems with less Gadgets...

What do you guys think??? Should I just change the fuse to 200Amp and keep the 4 gauge wire or just to be safe - upgrade the fuse and the power wire??? Any input would be greatly appreciated...

This isn't really a matter of opinion. Many 1200watt RMS amps are not such. Find all your fuses on the amps that you plan to use. Add up the total number off all the fuses. This number should be the size of the single fuse that you use at the battery. Also.. in most cases 4 gauge wire is plenty. If your power consumption is over 200 amps I would look at running a fresh 2 gauge power wire. If your at 300 amps or more????.... Then your battery and alternator are toast and we need to have another conversation.

Good luck son!!

Sorry... What I meant was to add up the total numeric value of the fuses. Then Use that number at the batt.

Example: Your 4 channel has (2) 30 amp fuses and your sub amp has (2) 40 amp fuses.... The main fuse at the batt should be close to 140 amps.

Word!

What brand and model of amps? How large is the amp your adding? DO NOT use a 200 amp fuse for 4 gauge. 4 Gauge carries 145 amps max so if you did have a short the fuse would not pop in time and could cause a fire. Have you done big 3 on your car? That is one of the best upgrades you can do for a high power audio system.
