TSX OEM speaker upgrade in Portland, OR?
TSX OEM speaker upgrade in Portland, OR?
Many of you know that I have started my own install shop in Portland OR. What you may not know is that I am creating my own speaker line.
Very few speaker companies own their speaker factories - Dynaudio and Seas and Peerless are rare.
I have a lower-power set of 6x9 woofers made for me by a US speaker manufacturer. They are rated to as much RMS power as the MB Quarts are rated, and are louder, but won't handle higher volumes on my JL 300/4 as well. Since they are more efficient they seem to be good candidates for rear 6x9 upgrading - IF the F speaks are upgraded with similar-efficency speakers.
Well, I also have 6" Euro-made midwoofers. They are purchased off the shelf from a major manufacturer. I use passive xovers with them of my own design (computer aided) when in higher power applications, but I would just use the OEM xover in a speaker-only upgrade.
Finally, I have the 1" silk-dome tweeter used by some major car speaker brands. It looks factory in the TSX dash, and is much better than the original tweeter. (See the 6" mid pics)
It should work OK with the original xover (built into the amp, I don't know the component value, so it has to be empirically tested). If it turns out to sound bad, the internal xover can be bypassed with a simple mod to the amp (two short wire jumpers which can be cut if the original speakers are re-installed). I will then use a custom xover.
What I'd like to do is try a speaker-only upgrade in the TSX and see what I and the owner think of it. No cutting metal, no visible mods at all. You post your opinion of the results, and if you don't like them it will all go back to factory with no traces short of CSI and their microscopes : )
Please contact me and let me know, thanks.

Pics aren't visible to me... please see (if need be):

I was supposed to say, also, that the 6x9 has a real rubber surround instead of cloth - oversized, too - , and a poly cone with titanium fairy dust on top - don't know taht this helps or not, but it was almost free...
The 6" mid is also a rubber surround rather than foam or cloth, poly/fiber hybrid cone, injection molded frame and Euro mounting holes (as visible). It is NOT an MB Quart. I think it uses the same surround supplier, since they look very similar, but they are not the same.

What's the cost?
Have a great day.
^^
Those look a hundred times better than the OEM speakers. I'm interested to see how the 6x9's sound powered off of the OEM amp. What's the price on the 6x9's?
I don't need them, but maybe I'll just try a set out just for fun and/or to support the "Dude"

Oh, maybe : )
Remember, when it comes to the mids and tweets, I'm not making those, I'm buying them... someone who does a lot of digging can buy them too, for a little more (I get some volume discounts). I'd love to take credit for speakers designed and made by a huge European driver manufacturer, but I would get busted : )
I'm making the passive xovers for them (I am using those mids and tweets in high-power setups for aftermarket amps, I just don't know how they'd sound with the OEM amp...)
I'm not positive the 6.5" would fit the TL... I know the 5.25 mid will.
Figure under $200 a set for the mid/tweet/passive xover kit. Slight diff between 5.25 and 6.5, but not a huge diff. No grilles.

I think if you can make a set for the TL, it would be a perfect choice for those who are looking ot upgrade speakers but not pay an arm and a leg for decent quality.
As I recall, the hole isn't that big. I put the Morel 5"s in that one time but I was not convinced that a 6" would fit if it had a wide frame, and our 6.5" does have that kind of frame. The databases say that there is 3-1/4" inch of depth, so the only question is if the hole is big enough or needs to be widened.
I have this hangup where I want to hear the speaks in the car before spec'ing a kit for the car : )
Any TL owners in PDX up for a project?

yeah, good point, i personnaly have not had the balls to open up the doorpanel of my TL yet, although i need to inorder to fix one of my window motors, but if i can find a CL for you in your area that might work as well, because i think the door speaker specs are the same. I agree with your thought on heardin the speakers in the car, before doing all that work. I'll try to find someone for ya

I'd love to test those 6x9 speakers out and write a review, that's what i'm thinking of doing, just replace the oem 6x9 speakers with something better while still on oem amp. Located in SoCal here.
