Trying to power a 12" Kicker Comp VR?

I wanted to power a 12" Kicker Comp Vr 2 or 4 ohm with a 400 or 600 watt amp. My question is, since the sub is 400 watts rms, would it be safe running a 400w amp at 2 ohms to get the full 400w out of it. Or should I use a 600w amp and run it at 4 ohms and get 300w rms to the speaker? Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks

If I run the 400w amp at 400w rms will it burn out the amp though? So if I use the 600w amp at 2ohms and run 600w rms to the speaker it will be alright? Sorry, I'm new to this audio stuff.

Haven't bought anything yet. Just trying to figure out exactly what to get. I wanted to keep everything uniform, so I also wanted to use a kicer amp, that's where my problem is. I don't know if I should use the 400.1 or 600.1 amp. If I run the 400.1 @ 2 ohms, I'll get 400w rms, but I'm thinking that wouldn't be safe for the amp. So, if I use the 600.1 @ 4 ohms, I would get 300w rms. The speaker ratings show that it is able to handle 400w rms and peaks at 800w. Does that mean it could handle more than 400w?
Thanks

Get the Kicker 400.1 and a Dual 4ohm 12. It will send 400 watts RMS and kickers amp produce more than they say.

Thanks for the help!

So your saying that the 200 watts given out at 4 ohm should be alright? ... Then if I decide to go with 2 12" Comp VR's then would the 800.2 amp work good at 4 ohms?

Thanks again.

No no no. I said get a 400.1 and a dual 4ohm sub and wire the sub to a 2 ohm load so u will be gettin 400 watts RMS. If you want to go with 2 comp vrs get the 800.2 and wired both subs and bridge them so you can get a 4ohm load. Anymore Help just let me know. are you upgrading anything else in the car or just adding bass.

Ah I see now...First I thought you had to get a 2ohm sub to be able to use it at 2ohm. I didn't know I could get a 4ohm sub and wire it as 2ohm. That's where I was getting confused at.
I'm just trying to add some bass for now, so I think 1 12" should be enough. I think 2 12" would take away from the high's.

Dont worry I didnt know about wiring before either. Kicker VRs have 2 voice coils and if you get a dual 4 ohm voice coil you can wire ut at either a 2ohm load or 8 ohm load. IF you bought a Dual 2 ohm you can wire it for a 1ohm load or 4 ohm load. Dual voice coils give you a more wiring flexabilty. But if its a single 2 ohm or a single 4 ohm you can only hook it up as a 2 ohm load or a 4 ohm load unless you have multiple woofer. Any confusion let me know..

I currently have a Solobaric 12 L5 and the specs on it are 600 rms and 1200 peak power and its kinda beign underpowered by a Fosgate 500s amp which it says its pushing 530 watts RMS; but over all its pretty damn loud.

If you are gonna be usign your factory bose, the bass will be overpowering if u thump out hard. I use to have a single Infiniti 12 and a 300watt amp and I use to have my treble up all the way. Now I redid the whole system and much better results but a empty back account.

Goodluck with your system if you need wiring tips let me know.

OK, I understand now!

I didn't know that since the sub could handle 400 watts rms it is safe to give it 400 watts. Anyhow, I think I will go with the setup we've been talking about. The 12" dual 4 ohm wired up to the 400.1 amp at 2 ohms. From what you said, that will be a lot of bass then...I hope I can still hear the music!

What kind of wiring kit should I use? 4 or 8 gauge? brand? Also, since I will be wiring the amp at 2 ohms does that mean the amp will only give 400 watts rms if the gain knob is turned all the way to max? And I just use the bass knob to control the bass?

The hard part will be wiring...never done it before. Also, I need to get a box to put it in?!

Or should I just go to a shop and have it done?

Thank you very much.

use 4 gauge wiring kit. Stinger has some goodkits outs there. I wired my car my self up till now due to gettin a complex system. When u wire all u have to do is run the power cable and ground and get a LOC and hook that up from the bose woofer.

When I first wired the TL I just 8 gauge and had to take that out and I put in 4 gauge due to more current draw. But it was easy for me to install just a sub in the car. Couple month ago I installed a single 10" in my lil sisters RSX and it was a bithc to do that car...

ok the bass knob all the way up will give u lower and deeper basss. I usually have my bass knob 1/5 of the way up. But when I wanna be heard coming down the street I put that thing almost full blast.

This is your first syem right. You get such a great feeling when u get the first system. Rigth now I am on my 7th.

Forgot about the box. What type of music do u listen to.

I mostly listen to rap, techno, and alternative. The ebst box for me was a small sealled box. I think u should get a 1.0cu ft sealed box.

I have a single 12" Comp VR and powered by a 350 watt Amp - Directed 250d model, with remote adjustable gain --PLENTY of noise and Power

Sounds great and truly dial it up or down, based on your wants, needs or company

Thanks for all the help. This is my first system, so hopefully this should sound good. I'll probably go with a sealed box because that's the same kind of music I listen to. Installing will be easier said then done! What's the LOC? Hopefully I can figure it out, if not I'll just have to pay the $20-$40 for installation.

BlackBeauty:
Where did you mount the knob in the car at? Also, where did you run the cable?

LOC is a Line out converter. ITs a lil thing where u tap the neg and pos from the bose woofer and on the other end theres RCA outputs adn this is where u run the patch cable to the amp. I think its worth it to pay 45 bucks to install. I didnt do my first installs due to being broke when i got the car. I got the car at 17 and was job less.

My Sub Gain is down by my right knee when driving, easy to reach, recessed

at inferior molding -- mounted with screws

Send me an e-mail or PM and I'll send you a pic. The installers did it, not sure if it is a wire or remote signal ...
