yea it is somewhat of a myth. But for his application 10's would be the best. Also the Diamond Audio D6 are some really reallly awesome subs

I will go agianst what is being said I would go with 12s... While there "may" be a slight differance in response you most likley will not be able to hear it.. A pair of 12s will have the ability of getting louder and going lower.. While you may not want anything that loud at the moment keep in mind its always easier to keep the sub level down if you dont want it louder then it is to get louder with subs that are at there max. Also anyone who has a system will tell you after listening to it for about a week you ALWAYS want more.. its nice to have that ability..

2 10's are much better for rock. 12's would hit harder and deeper, but would be more suited to rap.
You guys have no idea. It depends on the sub more than the size. I'd rather have 2 12" Diamond Audio subs for rock than 2 10's by Kicker or Rockford Fosgate. Check out a real car audio forum and you'll get the same response.

You're right! I have no idea what I am talking about. I have only tried 5 subwoofer setups in my TSX in the past 5 months alone. Although that doesn't account for the last 8 vehicles I have owned that have all had subs and amps from 8's to 18's. BTW- here is my most recent set up.

A 10 and a 12...the best of both worlds!
Do you have a pic of the system you designed and installed yourself?

In my last vehicle i had 5 different sub/amp combinations in 1.5 years and i designed and installed them all myself. I've got everything ordered for the 1st part of my install on my TSX.
Another thing you should know is its highly frowned upon to mix/match sub sizes in the same vehicle, you will get whats called a comb filter effect, or cancellation of lower frequencies. If it sounds good to you thats all that matters and i'll be sure to post some pics of my new setup as soon as its installed.

from my expericene I say the 10's I have designed and built numerous systems for friends cars. One friend only listens to rock and he had a single 12 and was lookin for more accurate bass. Went with 2 10s diamond and he was alot happier. Also I have tried 2 10's in my car and they sounded awesome on techno and rock.
Check out sounddomain.com. I have also reviewed many subs. I usually buy subs to just test them out.
I jsut think 2 12s are a lil overkill for rock.

BTW-where does everyone think the bass goes?

Anyway, I'm not doubting the setup. Actually, I'm curious, have you tried using a steep slope crossover between the two - i.e. upper subbass range to the 10", lower range to the 12"? Likely overkill in that if there were a benefit it wouldn't be worth the cost...but just curious if you've considered/tried it.

spoon-I think they are both set for low pass with diff cutoffs. Will have to look at where it ended up after tuning. I think the x9's might be considered to be set for bandpass though since the lows are cut out and the highs are cut out.
If you are sticking to alpine go with the dual 10s. They would be more accurate for your music, and depending on the amp ... would most likely be more efficient than a single 12. 2 10s = 20" of cone area. 20" > 12" You can do a nice sealed sq box with the Type R subs, under 2 cu ft box.

For the record, I'd also go with the 10" over the 12" driver all other things being equal...preferrably one over a pair if set up properly.
Multiple drivers of different sizes working within the same frequency range is silly and will lead to more trouble than it's worth...and I'm not even sure what it is worth. Adding more than one crossover to facilitate, say, a 10" and 12" working at different crossover points adds many wildcards into the overall frequency response of the vehicle.
My
? Unless you're going for major SPL on a competition level, invest in a high-quality 10" (or pair if you must) that has a respectible efficiency and match it to a similar amp that fulfills the sub's power requirements. You'll wind up with a small footprint, great response and plenty of output with minimal slop and clipping.
Thats ^^^ it. I couldnt remember how you do those measurments. You seen pretty stuck on alpine. What is your budget? A nice 10" woofer is all you really need for daily listening use, that is in a good install.
