Subwoofer Damaging Navi/DVD

Hello everyone,

This is my first post. I recently purchased 04 NHB/Parch TSX Navi. I really like the quality of the sound system, but am considering a few upgrades. Would it be worth it to just swap out the 6x9's for some alpines or pioneers?? Or would I be better off adding two 8's or 1 10 or 1 12. Im looking for hard hitting SQ bass. Also I heard that there have been problems with woofers damaging te dvd reader in the trunk. Does anyone have experience or a possible fix for this problem??? THANKS.

Hey Glott I live in Gainesville to!!!!!!!!!

I say put in subs, like a single 10 or 12 . I have a TL with a single 12 W7 I can let u hear that. I also have a single 10inch in my sisters RSX. I say do a single JL w3 sealed.

As far as navi, I really dont think it will mess it up, unless the disk is playing and u are jamming the music all the way up.

I have 2 Eclipse SW8122 Aluminum 12" in right now, and just that combination caused some damaged my DVD reader. I have an appt. w/ the dealer tommorow to get it "checked out" for $88 dollars and hour, but thats just for the diagnostics. Thats bullshit, they say if it was caused by the after market audio system I'd have to pay for it, but if its something else the warranty will cover it. When I put in my 2 Xtant X series X124's thats when my Navi completely shut down. I took those out since and am happy w/ just the 2 Eclipses. I'm putting them back in though b/c I'm sick and obsessed with bass, all four I had puttin out close to 2000 watts. Anyways, the navi reader is messed up, and rather than payin out the ass for the dealer to run a diagnostics and then fix it, I'm gonna have Alpine fix it. I called alpine and they told me that the screen I was gettin meant that it was the dvd reader and not the wires that were messed up. They said they charge $105 to fix it no matter what was wrong with it. Acura will most likely check it for a plethora of things that may not have to do with it directly, according to the service rep at the dealer who said it'd take several hours! I'm convinced Alpine will be the inexpensive way out.
Other problems I've encountered with a lot of bass and the Navi reader in the trunk is that the disc gets scratched like a bitch. So even when I get it fixed it may be a problem, or at least until I move it to a safer spot.
These discs cost just about 200 bucks!
Once I get a new one, I'm gonna see if a dual layer burnded dvd will be the cheap replacement so I can keep my music bumpin.

Here's a picture of my 2 12's when i first got the car. Had a custom plexi and board in front w/ a blue neon, looked pretty good, but it dont like anything like that anymore. I'm workin on bigger and better things. [IMG][/IMG]

oh btw, the neon doesn't look off center and all fucked up like that in real life, haha-- that looks pretty hoodrich, but its still the best pic I got. And those extra wires aren't there anymore either.

thanks for the info, so it sounds like if you are pushing 2000 watts there might be some issues, but maybe a couple of 8s or a 10 with 400-500 watts woudln't be as bad. I wonder if there is a way to "insulate" the dvd reader from damage.

1) No way to insulate the DVD reader.
2) The only report I've read of a "damaged" DVD also had modified DVD wiring wo we don't really know what happened.
3) There are a shitload of threads on upgrading audio - it would be a disservice by me to pretend otherwise. You have two choices:

A)Decide what you want to change, then figure out how to do it. If you like the factory sound, why do you want to change it?

B) Try to find out what other people have done so you can be just like them - but not basing your plan on the sound you want, just a popularity contest.

Decide which you are and proceed accordingly.

I really think that you'd have to move it with that much bass. I dont think insulation would be too effective. I'm not pushing the 2000 watts yet, I gotta get a new alternator for that. But the Xtant amp says it puts out the same amount of power even when voltage is not "optimal". Can't wait to finish this bitch, but it prob. wont be till summer.

I have a 12... no problems here... and I never heard of anyone experiencing problems with their DVD jumping out of place either.
