subwoofer box

does it matter if the sub is upward firing or straight back. i am planning on making a box but i am afraid that if i make it so it fires straight back my golf clubs or anything that i put in in my trunk with rub up against it. i don't like the look of grills. don't think it matters but just want to check. thanks

I am to understand that if it is ported. As long as the port is clear direction does not matter.
And I would say port to the side.

Iv'e turned mine firing up, rear and forward. The rear seems to sound better to me. mine is ported to the side.

Before I built my fiberglass boxes I had a Qlogic bandpass box in my trunk and it sounded best when the ports fired sideways towards the passenger side. After trying all the other directions, sideways sounded best for me.

You might want to consider a down firing sub.

Sealed fiberglass? Where are you going to put it? Is it going to be molded to the trunk somwhere or just sitting right in the middle? Have fun with the fiberglass! If I can give you any advice when working with the fiberglass it's, buy disposable rubber gloves and change them frequently or it will get everywhere! And I mean everywhere...the dog, the dining table, the toilet paper, your clothes, your car ............get it

I thought about a fibre-glass box but it will not sound as good as a ported enclosure. But if you want to save space and not looking into huge SPL then that is ok. Otherwise if you are looking for SPL then you will be disapointed. But from my experience, firing the subs to the rear trunk will sound best no doubt about it.
