Subs Go Thump Thump

So I finished wiring everything in my car, and when I turn up the volume my 2 - 12 inch rockford's hit really really well, but when I lower the volume, they continue to thump consistently. Even if I turn the volume all the way down, the subs hit on a constant rate no matter what I do. I have fooled around with the tuning and everything and I just can't get it to stop. I'm not sure if it is a power surge or what the hell is wrong. I ran my wires for the amps down the right side of the car, and the wires for my speakers down the middle. I have no engine noise when the radio is on at all, and a very little amount when the head unit is turned off. My other amp for my high's does not have this problem.Any suggestions to stop the power surge that my amps are having??????

Sounds like your amp could be motor-boating - the amp could be shutting off and turning back on over and over. This usually has one of three causes:

1) Low voltage due to bad power connection or bad ground connection,

2) High current draw due to subs being mis-wired.

3) Low or varying voltage on the remote turn-on wire.

Other possibilities:

Bad wiring of the signal inputs to the amp. Unplug the RCA's at the amp and see if the thumping stops. If no, see above. If yes, then try it with an iPod or MP3 player or discman and see if things are OK.

Bad amp.

When I unplug the RCA's from the sub amp, the thumping stops completely. Could I have spliced the wires poorly when I made the headunits' signal into the RCA's to run to the trunk.

It is almost as if the amp is holding on to the power. Because when I turn the car on, and put the volume all the way down, it doesn't do it, but once I put the volume up, even a little bit, it starts the thumping, and continues even if I put the volume down.

have you tried switching the source signals (RCA's) from the two amps just to see if it is the amp or the source that is the problem? If you wtill get thumping after hooking the amp up to the RCA's from the amp for the highs then it's the amp, if not, it's the wiring. Good luck!

I had already tried using the RCA's that I have going to my highs, and it continued to thump. So is it definately my amp, because I have doubled and triple checked my wiring, and I just can't find anything wrong

I am not yet totally convinced that it is the amp.

What speakers do you have wired to the amp? What impedance are they? Single or dual voice coils? Parallel or series?

What voltage do you measure at the amp power terminals when this happens? Is it dropping?

Does it still happen with an iPod or Discman?

The problem seems to have dissappeared. I'm not sure what I did to get rid of it, but I did tighten up my wires everywhere. I tightened up the wires on the ground, the cap, and everywhere else. Lets just hope that thumping doesn't come back
