well everyone is going to give you different answers but in a nutshell it comes down to 2 things: the type of enclosure (ported, sealed box, bandpass) and how much room you want to sacrifice for the box. There are woofers out there called solobarics which use less than a third the size of a box for a typical woofer. The drawback of the solobaric is they cost more and they are only half as efficient so you would need 2x the power (again, a more powerful amp will cost more). As for the box type, each one gives you a different type of sound and that will depend on the music you like to listen to. Ported boxes are the most efficient so they play the loudest at any given power, but generally they are not as 'tight' a bass sound. Think of a bandpass boxes as essentially a sealed enclosure put inside a ported opening. They tend to sound better than a strictly ported enclosure, but generally require more size. In my car, i use 2 10" Stillwater Designs in a sealed enclosure. I like rock, fusion and classical guitar. I dont listen to any rap. The Stillwater woofers require 1.25 cubic feet per woofer, (2.5 cu ft total, plus you have to account for the thickness of the box itself, which should be made out of at least 3/4", if not 1", MDF (medium density fiberboard) and not particle board) which is about average for a sealed box of 10's. This does take up a considerable amount of trunk. I dabbled with the idea of solobarics at the begging just to take up less trunk space, but at the end of the day, no matter what dimensions i came up with, it seemed pointless to spend all that much more given what little extra space I would have had. In my opinion the only reason to go with the solobarics would be if you were hell bent on keeping the pass-thru as you could have a custom set of solobaric boxes made that would sit on either side of the pass thru.

How much money are u working with, maybe I can help. I have a 2001 TL and just got 2 alpine 10's added and a pair of clarion tweeters.
with 2'g u can do a **** load, i spent about 950 for mine. I got a 450 watts RMS amp powering 2 Alpine type S 10's and Clarion Tweeter in the front, and they made a big ass difference. With 2'g u can get a new deck and one awesome ass system. Also I got the trunk dynamated. If I had 2 g's I would go wit 2 Alpine type R 12's (wit dual voice coils). A 600 watt RMS amp and get components up front.
