Sub Recommendations

Hey Everyone,

Just picked up a new CL-S (couldn't let you guys have all the fun! ). The first thing I need to do is add some bass. I'm looking for something fairly easy to install that will give me some extra thud, but I don't need to shake the car next to me. What do you guys run?

Thanks for your help!

Craig

i have a 12inch 8000 series mtx sub in a q-logic box powered by an mtx amp as well and it thumps enough for me. one thing, the cl has very good sound insulation qualities. when playing my music really loud, it's hardly audible at the outside.

I am thinking about getting two 12" DVC Alpine Type R's. I have 4 Kickers now but I can't fit anything else in the trunk.

A week ago I had the Infinity “Basslink” installed in my 2001 CL and I have been very happy with it. I think the original Bose system sounds good but it lacks a bottom end bass and the “Basslink” adjusted properly gives me the bass punch I like in a system. It’s not the type of system you will hear a block away but it will give you a good clean, low-end bass.

There are some earlier posts relating to the Basslink, which are not very flattering, I disagree with them.

Thanks for the info. I was looking at the Infinity, but wasn't sure if it would work with the Bose system. I feel the same way, the system sounds basically OK, just needs a little more punch at the low end. I would really like an EQ, especially if I could fit one in the space where the removable tray is. What kind of music do you usually listen to DR, and could you tell me where they mounted the sub? Thanks!

The infinity basslink will add a (very) little more bass to the system, if you want a simplistic answer get a boston 110, which is an enclosed 10" subwoofer with a passive radiater like the infinity but you need to get a seperate amplifier(monoblock only) to run the sub, this subwoofer has 10 times the sound quality of the basslink, and more volume too. By the way, people who think they can be heard down the block don't understand that you can't do that on accident!!!!, you can't hear a basslink from 15 feet away or 30 or 1 block

Basslink

That's a good thing !

Haven't you seen the OLD Rockers that are now DEAF, all those with little or NO hearing from being constantly Decimated by the MUSIC.

This is just an opinion but quality sound can be had at a fairly high audible rate, but that's just PURE MACHISMO to want some one down at the Walmart -- or the Local CLUB down the Road, to hear it 1.5 minutes before you arrive.

Guess Wisdom -- for the most part -- comes with age.

Look on the Bright side, it's an opportunity for you to LEAN SIGN LANGUAGE in you Middle age!

Here are options to consider:

1. Basslink seems like a good way to go if you do not want to spend too much. I would love to compare the basslink versus my sub/amp combo. I think the estimate is under $500 with install.

2. My system was spendy (total with install was around $1,400. $400 was for the install but that is the price I pay for having 2 left hands. But I love that I can adjust the bass from the seat. Also, I think I got really good parts that should last.

3. Go with a dual sub combo with one box where you can install the amp to the box. It is difficult to find a place to install amp in the trunk. If you are good at doing it yourself, then this will not be a problem. But installing amp to the box will save a ton in install cost.

If you search the A/V section, you should be able to find a picture of my set-up. It is very simple and clean. Nothing fancy.

I've seen it

It looks Great Eggplan-EX and I'm sure it sounds good.

My 2 Driving Priorities are your # 1-- Money, but Trunk Space is the other issue. This little item seems to deal with both those issues. At 40, I'm a little past wanting it THUMPING Loud too.

Thanks for the Info !

I also got the basslink. I was VERY suprised at the volume I get! It's loud, & clean bass. It shakes my doors, & rear view mirror just fine. It's easy to install, & if you get it off of ebay, is under $230. I had my old box with 2 kicker 12's, & a Kicker 600W amp, & it was WAY WAY WAY too much bass. I lost my trunk space too. If you are going to replace the whole system, a setup like that would be good. But the Stock system left in, with so much bass added, drowns out the highs. The Basslink also is small, so you can still use your trunk, & access the spare without taking the box out. I'm happy. You could also add a 2nd one, & still be able to use that trunk.

you could also check out Image Dynamics IDQ10s

a normal box size is .55 cu ft sealed each.. so youd have plenty small of a box..

depending on your budget you could also check out getting one id max 12 it only needs 1.3 cu ft both awesome choices

Hmm I should probably frequent this forum more...I usually exhaust myself on acura-tl.com. Mmmmm quality wise you can't go wrong with Infinity, quantity is Rockford Fosgate, and a mixture is JL. I prefer JL, my brother prefers Infinity, his girlfriend prefers RF, I suggest you go to a dealer and listen for the best. A good 10" in any of these will give you good bump but not too much, and save you space. Or go to the tl forums and I can answer more in depth

Believe me when I say that Infinities were not built for SPL...RF's were. The HX series can kill Kappa Perfects size-by-size no matter what. Though, as I said Infinity is better SoundQ. Even so, you should go listen and see what is the best for you.

I know man. i had RF before and i still have it with a custom box in my garage. Its specially designed seal at 1.25cu/ft. It hit pretty hard but im just saying i like infinities better. i like SQ. But for some reason i feel that my kappa perfect hits harder. Maybe its just the car or the box. Thats is just my opinion. Overall Infinity=best SQ and RF=SPL.

i figured since i am going only 1 12" sub setup, i mind as well go SQ since 1 12' will never hit as hard as 2 12's of the same brand and model.

I agree...although the JL 12w6v2 and the 12w7 has more than given RF a run for it's money. But yeah, I love Infinity for their SQ.

Infinity vs. IDQ

Ok, i"m hearing a lot about Infinity SQ now, but what about the IDQs SQ vs. Infinity ?

IDQ10s vs Infinity Kappas 10s
IDQMax 10s (NOT Out yet) w/ Infinity 10s * ( 10s are what I want)

*Compair IDQMAX 12 vs Infinity Kappa 12s

Hm...that's a bit more subjective. In my book, Infinity and Image Dynamics are close competitors in SQ...however I hate the look of the IDQ. Second, it doesn't handle nearly as much power, I have had Infinity's outbump IDQ's plenty of times. Third, Infinity's seem to respond better to ported and bandpass enclosures, while IDQ's prefer sealed. Lastly, the IDQ, like the JL subs, just don't really seem to have that extra crispness and clarity...although they are pretty clear, so is JL. It's like the difference between high res TV and HDTV. You can just tell it's crisper. I can compare the Thiele small parameters if you like...but well I assumed you wanted a subjective commentary...

i wouldn't buy anything that you could get from a major chain store like good guys or circuit city. i'm looking into focal utopia w27, or an alumapro alchemy 10"dvc, or an avi sls 27mm. these are mainly sq. it all depends what you want.

Image Dynamics

I'm going with the Image Dynamics 10" subwoofer, IDQ10. It's a single voicecoil, 4 ohms. From all the research I've done, this sounds like one of the most "musical" subs out there. But be warned, this is not an SPL sub, which is fine by me.

Re: Image Dynamics

A wise Choice I think. I think I will eventually head in that direction as well.

I've always stuck with XTANT amps and JL subs.
