streeteffectz! need some expert advise
I called a local shop, which has been around for 13 years and has done many professional installs. He has seen my car and he said that he can keep the origianl head unit and use a custom built high/low converter that has rca outputs with 4-5 watts. Can something like that be done? He'll charge $200, is that cheap?

sup dude, how you been.
Anyways, i assume you are trying to add a amp and a subwoofer. $200 dollars for the hi-lo converter is a huge fucking rip off. All you need to do tap into signal from the rear speakers and line that into the hi-lo converter. From the converter, RCA cables come out which you hook up to the amp. The converter cost $20-25 at good guys and only requires minimal work. They probably quoted you that much because they thought you don't know shit and that they could rip you off. Its a 20min job, max! Try to find a different place that won't rip you off.
If you still can't find a place, let me know and i will find you a place in san francisco that will do it pretty cheap.
I will see you at the meet and you can take a look at my setep, its exactly as i described above.

gmilian : if you are looking for a better sound with an addition of an amp/sub combo, you are headed down the correct path.
I am amazed at the sound coming from just an amp/sub addition. I was so nervous about spending all that money. But the speakers actually seem to be amplified as well, tho' I know they are not.

Yes, this can be done, and for a quality job, $200 is more than worth it. Zapco amps are excellent, which model were you looking at?

I carry zapco if you are interested and I'm sure I can get you a good deal on either of those amps.

It would sound fine depending upon where you have them mounted and what kind of power (amp) you'd have running to them. With a good front stage, there's no need for rear fill (but it has to be done right).
