stock sub questions

I want to install an aftemarket sub. I was wondering if it is ok to disconnect the stock sub and use the input signal cables to hook up directly to the amp(has a high level to low level converter) and use an aftermarket sub. Will this work properly? I do not want to change the HU.

you can do that or just take it from before the amp at a low level (take out the back seat seat back and its on the passenger side)

thats not too recommended since stock HU puts out too much, so distortion is there, also dont forget to hook the amp power directly to the battery.

you might also run into this problem, since the bass is controlled by the HU, that governs the interior speakers and the sub as well...if you set up the bass high, you will basically lose your highs in the car....it is always best to set highs/midrange trebles inside the car, and bass from the sub(trunk) only, since you are not changing your interior speakers.

good luck.

Will I have a lot of distortion? I plan on having the bass (on HU) set in the middle, while having the bass on the amp turned up to my listening level(high).

I've never done this, but here's what I know. The preamp signal going to the amp behind the rear seat is much higher than a normal preamp signal. (Probably would work, I don't know for sure). The external EQ hooked to the factory head unit does a bass gain at lower volumes, so you'll get automatic loudness compensation, which may or may not be desireable to you. The power going to the amp can be used for remote turn-on if you disconnect the amp, but of course not for actually powering your new amp. The preamp signal is in a twisted pair inside a brown sheath going to the amp. Some people have used line out converters and just used the sub speaker output to a new amp and have been happy--but that would not be my first choice.
