Steering wheel audio control malfunctioned...

my steering wheel audio controls are malfunctioning. It works like 20% of the time depends on its silly mood. Is there a way to fix them, or anyone know what the problem is. It's not like it doesn't work, it just works when it feels like it.

Ive been having this same problem! My boyfriend said that there are copper contacts in the steering column and they are probably just dirty... I dont know if that helps at all... considering the amount of work it must take to even get to that lol. But he may be right because if it stops working usually if I just turn my wheel either which way it will work again :shrugs:

I seem to recall there was a TSB about this and the contacts in the steering wheel weren't making solid contact. You need to remove the steering wheel and bend some metal slightly to improve the contact. I'm sure you can google/search for the details.

have fun
PS.
1. i did it and it fixed my controls. maybe 45min-1hr of your time.
2. careful with those torx bits. i stripped mine and had to buy new ones.
3. scratch the ground plate evenly and lightly (enough for your nail to dig into it) otherwise you'll ruin the column.

is there a better way...it seems very how much you guys think the dealer would charge to fix it...mine has no problem w/ the skipping track...just works like half the time to adjust volume and next track! I CANT LIVE WITHOUT THEM CONTROLS

When I was back @ UTI, I also started to have this issue. YES, there is a TSB for it.. as I printed out the TSB DIY Fix-it from alldata.com. Its in a huge pile with all my UTI textbooks, so I'll find some time tomorrow to go through and scan the DIY-instructions, then I'll post if for you guys.

Its not hard. Nothing to be scared of. It will be a couple hundred for the dealer to do it.

Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but I'm having the same problem (well, the down-arrow working as volume-up and up-arrow changing tracks) occasionally. The TSB link isn't working anymore. I've been trying to locate it...

Can anyone help me find the TSB?

Nope, that site only seems to have the titles/summary of the TSB, not the actual text.

I guess I'll ask my mechanic to look it up for me.

Does anyone have the information, I've tried to open it from a bunch of different links and all say I don't have access. I just got a 03 TL-s and I'm so used to using steering wheel controls on my previous car, this is driving me crazy- I'll pull apart the column, but want to see the guide on how to diy. I updated my adobe reader too- it's not that. Thanks in advance

IF you find the information I also need to know where the ground problem is located.

I found the same fix for an 2001 to 2003 MDX which seems to be the same bulletin as the other Acuras for those years. I have it in a PDF file from a scan. I will enclose it in the message. I hope I do this correctly.
I still cant find the ground everyone keeps referring to. I was looking over my service manual and still could not find a specific ground that feeds the clock spring. does anyone have that bulletin?

Hi Guys,

I had the same problem. When I raised the volume, the song or station changed.

This is what I did.
  • Unscrew two screws to remove unit from steering wheel.
  • Unplug unit from steering wheel & unscrew the tiny phillips screws in the back of the unit.
  • The plastic covering the circuit board has a couple of tabs so be careful not to break them.
  • I removed the circuit board and made tiny scratches on the contacts (in the circuit board) where the buttons make contact.
  • Then I re-placed everything back together.

I'm sorry that I don't have any pictures, I was in a hurry when I was completing this task. I'm not saying this will solve the problem, but it has been a couple of weeks, and the controls are working prefectly.

Took about 15-20 minutes to complete.

By the way, the link http://www.in.honda.com/Rjanisis/pubs/SB/B03-015.PDF does not work.
