I wouldn't use the plastic cups that the stock spkrs sit in - I made adapter rings for my 6.5" spkrs using MDF. You have to maintain the 1" thickness of the stock adapter cups so that you're new spkrs don't intrude into the door preventing your windows from going down.
If you are handy and have tools: trace the shape of the stock plastic spkr cup on a piece of MDF and mark the screw holes that go into the door. Also you need a 6.5" circle in the center of the adapter for your spkr. Use a jigsaw or sabre saw to cut the hole out and then cut the shape of the stock adapter. I used two 1/2" pieces of MDF and glued them together to make the 1" thick adapter. Drill holes where the door screws go and put it in. Then mount your spkrs to the new MDF rings. Here's how mine turned out.

Oh yeah I've got some good amps driving them so you really feel the bass hit your legs. 6.5" 3-ways in fronts and 5.25" 2-ways in the rears - plus a 10" sub in the trunk - my system cranks

Yes - about 1.75" of clearance behind the metal door panel so the speaker you install should be about 2.75" ~ 3" deep.
