Speakers and amp upgrade questions.

I've been doing some reading about upgrading the TSX's speakers and amp. Are the Alpines and Polks the best bet to upgrade the speakers? Do they fit well without any cutting? Aren't the 6x9's only used for sub frequencies? Is it a waste to put a full range speaker in they're place? Also, is the stock amp separate from the head unit so a replacement amp can just fit in it's place?

Thanks for any input,

Scott

With Polks I made some .5 inch spacer rings out of MDF--> no cutting required. Several other people have put in Alpine speakers and I believe that most of them cut sheet metal but someone may have used spacers too. 6X9 only gets low frequencies courtesy of crossover in stock amp which is about the size of one of those joke a day calendars so you can't fit anything where the stock amp is. Someone once told me that putting full range speakers in place of the 6X9's would move my soundstage to the rear which was undesirable, I dunno. currently my 6X9 are unpowered and just sitting there cuz I put a sub in the trunk so I have no experience/advice as to putting full range speakers in there except that you have to get a signal from one of the door speakers due to the crossover in the factory amp. Have fun, difference is noticeable.

Thanks Gpump,

Maybe I'll just replace the door speakers and 6x9's. I'll skip upgrading the amp. I want to keep this simple. Anyone have a good suggestion on 6x9's or should I try to put a different size in where they are like a pair of 8" subs? I want them to fit flush without major cutting or taking up anymore space in my trunk than the stock 6x9's.

i upgraded my 6x9s for Alpine Type-Ss, and i must say im very pleased with the result... the bass is much tighter and clearer and it can hit higher volumes than the stock set. i remember when i played my stock set too loud it would sound like they were cracking, maybe that was just the vibration, but either way that sound is gone... i soon wanna upgrade the doors, just when i get the money

Thanks acuratsx03,

That's great that you can notice an improvement from upgrading the 6x9 subs. I was wondering if it would'nt be cost effective to replace them. I'm going to go with a good component 6.5 set up front and coaxial 6.5's in the back doors? What's the best out there for each for under $300 a pair? Polks, Alpines, Focals, Diamond Audio? I'd also like to find a quality, small 5 channel amp if I could fit it somewhere? I'll save that upgrade for last.

Thanks again,

Scott

Edit:
I have KEF Reference speakers in my home 5.1 setup and was wondering if I could get a hold of two of the 'racetrack' 6x9 drivers that come in the Q series, if they would work as quality 6x9 subs?

Has anyone ever considered Boston Acoustics speaker? I'm surprised it has never been mentioned in any speaker upgrade thread. When I auditioned my splits, it was a close call between Boston Pro and Focal K2P (but Focal won my heart )
