Speaker upgrade/replacement

I just got a 2000 TL for a really good deal. I've seen where some places say to get 6.5 and Crutchfield says 5.25 for speaker size replacements. I was wondering what some members on here replaced theirs with. Size and model.

Thanks!!!

I have an 01 and put 6.5" Focal coax's in and sounds amazing. I highly recommend Focal they are the best sounding car speakers I have ever listened to.

JM Labs (Focal) speakers are good, no doubt. However, even DIY brands like Vifa, Tangband, and Dayton have potential.

OP, I replaced my door speakers with H-Audio Ebony drivers, and installed a set of tweeters in the A-pillar. I run each speaker actively without a crossover box, through a processor, amplified with a 4ch amp.

Thanks for the input. I'm replacing the HU tomorrow or Thursday. I hope I have it wired correctly and setup for the sub to work with it. I'm curious to see what the BOSE speakers sound like with a new HU. The main reason I'm replacing the HU is because I play a lot of burned CDs and the player doesn't like those. Plus I will add the USB and AUX feature. If I don't like the speakers in it, I wonder if my HU would sound ok with new speakers and not a 4 channel amp. I'm just going to have to play around with it and see. I use to be into car audio big time 10-15 years ago. Now I'm 33 with a wife and two kids so my budget has shrunk!!! At least I can do the installing myself. Thanks again guys!

I ran the BOSE front speakers for a long time, sounded great EXCEPT you need to use the head unit's crossover and set it around 90-110hz, highpass. The Bose EQ unit that the stock HU uses does some of this, when you ditch it (don't forget to bypass it!), you need to do crossover work on your HU.

At the moment im running the speakers off of the h/u without an amp and they still sound pretty good. When im able to get an amp for the speakers it will waken them up a lot more, but it's doing better than I expected off the h/u.

Did you have to buy a speaker adapter to fit them going from 5.25 to 6.5? If so where did you get them

About a million times easier than the head unit is to remove.

Seriously, just a few screws, and pull.

You can Make yourself a New Adapter/Spacer to fit the New Oversized Speaker or you can use the Stock Spacer + Clean RTV Silicone like I did, Its as easy like taking the Door Cover off.

You´ll have to Cut some Spacer Plastic tough but thats it!
Not alot of mumbo jumbo involved...

So in a Nutshell for the Easy way to Install Oversized Speakers you´ll Need:
1.- Something strong Enough to Cut Plastic.
2.- Clean RTV Silicone

Or if You have the Experience and whant a Neat Job and have more $$ is to Build a New Spacer out of MDF but that involves a bunch of other stuff... NARF!
