Speaker install help - 2006 TSX

I ran into a small problem tonight trying to install my new speakers. Just so you all know, I don't know any more about how to do this other than what I've read here, so this is my first attempt. Got the door off just fine - the instructions were very good. However fitting an Infiniti 6012i (6.5") into the door was not so good. I thought they fit the TSX, but I must have blown it and misread something. The speaker goes in except for the last 1/2" (the rear metal housing is too wide to fit in the 4 1/8" hole).

So, is this common that has a common solution, or did I just get the wrong speaker? Seems like a very big gap to try and add some kind of spacer. Please help! I've got an 06 AT non-navi.

OK, I figured out I need a spacer. Any recommendations? I suppose I could make them - seems like the ones for sale are either rediculous ($20 ea) or provide little info as to whether they are the right ones.

I think the ones you want are called Metra spacers. Do a search in Audio & Video on "metra" to verify. If so, you can pick them up here: http://www.amazon.com/Metra-Universa.../dp/B0002BG6QY

This is the one - http://www.millionbuy.com/aihsb518.html

Make sure to get some 1/4" foam adhesive weatherstripping from Home Depot or Lowes.

^^^ That looks perfect - and no drilling! Thanks!!!!!

Sorry for another noob question, but how do you use the 1/4 tape? Between the adapter and the door, or the adapter and the speaker?

Both, The tape works like a gasket to seal any air leaks. Air leaks = week bass among other things.

I used the ring more as an alignment guide. I snapped it to the door and then mounted the speaker to the door with sheet metal screws. You have to drill thru the ring so the screws pass thru if you want to do this.

One more thing, install the speaker with the terminals facing down, if you look at the shape of the cut out in the door panel you will it will fit better that way.

^^ Thanks - I actually had dynamat ready to go as the barrier between the adaper and the metal. I'll use the weather strip to seal the speaker to the adapter. I needed the spacing for sure. Was a sad, sad moment to have the door all torn apart just to realize it would not fit.

I just installed the infinity 6020's and instead of buying spacers, i made my own out of the old stock speakers. Simply cut the speaker out of the large, thick outside ring and screw the new speaker in. Be sure to use the foam stripping so it creates somewhat of a seal. Bonus: You can use the old OEM speaker's connector and solder on some wires to attach to the new speaker. I wish I'd have taken pictures

Has anyone else done it this way?

You're gonna love the dynamat. Make sure to get it stuck to every piece of metal possible. I used the "bang bang" technique to find additional rattles -- bang on the door and try to find out where it's coming from, then stick dynamat over it!! Neighbors must have thought I was nuts.

They're on order! 2 days and they should be here in time for a weekend install.

OK, finished the project today. I wote up my "lessons learned" to the original thread that I found discussing how to install. Since it's linked to the DIY section, I put it there.

https://acurazine.com/forums/showthr...15#post5460615

As for the sound? Night and day. Really, when you pull these cheap feather-weight speakers out you wonder how Acrua could really justify something like that in a luxury sedan. They had a very week mid-range in my opinion. The Infinity's sound fantastic! Since all four are 2-way, you get some help on the high end - much more crisp. The mid is strong now - I can actually hear guitars. The bass sounds tighter to me, but I'm not detecting much more depth. I may have to turn my attention to a sub or replace the 6x9s. However, if I never did another change, replacing the four was worth every penny and every minute. After all the parts (wire adapters, spacers and speakers), the total bill was just shy of $300.

Thanks to all for your help!
