something wrong with my tweets

just recently ive been hearing my alpine type r tweeters start to make an odd cracking clicking sound, specially when i play rock music. im not sure if i blew them or not, i dont think i did, but the noise bothers the hell out of me and i cant stand it. the tweets are part of the component set but i dont have the 6 1/2's or xovers installed. maybe the xovers will help this? anybody have any ideas why my tweeters are doing this?? any help is appreciated. thanx

Possibilities:

1) Blown tweets

2) Clipping amp (as Jigga said, factory or aftermarket?)

3) Clipping the front end of the aftermarket amp IF you have a line driver...

4) Amp clipping due to instalaltion-related voltage drop (does it do it on bass notes?)

im running the stock amp, so maybe its that? anyway to pinpoint the problem more accuratley... maybe id be better off replacing the stock amp to power the 6x9s, tweets and doors?

While it is very possible that the stock amp is either running out of power or in some other fashion having a problem, here is my first question:

1) Did you use the xovers that came with the Alpine seperates? Or did you simply connect the tweeters in place of the stock tweeters?

Just re-read your original post.

Your tweeters may be blown. I believe that they have been playing too much midrange. You state that you did not use the xovers that came with them.

I believe that the TSX amp is a Front/Rear/Sub six-channel amp, and that the tweeter outputs are actually the same signal as the mids, only with a series capacitor on them.

We know that the doors aren't band-passed (i.e., with both the lows AND highs taken out) because when people put coaxials in the door, they play high notes (so the highs aren't being taken out by any crossover).

So I suspect your tweets have been playing with a capacitor first-order 6dB/octave crossover. (Even if I am wrong, we can assume the crossover is still not the right one for those tweets...)

If this theory is correct, the crossover point could be wrong (since the tweeters probably have different impedance curves) and the crossover filter slope would be too gentle (i.e., midrange would be too loud, forcing the tweeter diaphragm to try to move too far).

Maybe they haven't blown up. To find out AS A TEST take the wires at your tweeter and connect them to the input of your xover, and connect the tweeter OP of your xover to your tweeter, and play the system and listen to that tweeter (disconnect the other one). Do not leave it this way... this is just a test.

If that sounds OK, the real long-term solution is to install the xovers in the center console by the amp. Run the F mid wires into the xovers, and then cut the tweeter OP wires at the amp and connect them to the tweet outputs of the xover

Always use the xovers that come with, unless you are going with a complex active system that you control.

so far ive just kept the music down. im gonna take it to my friend who installed my system to see what he says, though i pretty much believe everything you say. were gonna first disconnect the tweets to make sure its them, which i am 95% sure it is them thats making the horrid sound. after that ill probably install the xovers and pray that the tweets are not ruined... ebay buying has come back to bite me in the ass... we'll see about that though now wont we. anyways, thanx a lot elduderino, your input has been 0-so-valuable and it is much appreciated. you are def. one of the top audio guys on this board. thanx and ill let yo know how it goes

I've had my car a few months and still have the stock radio. I also get crackling sounds from the tweeters when playing certain rock music. Hope it's coming from the amp and not the head unit. It also seems to be prominent on the pasenger side of car. Come to think of it, it's usually softer rock (Rolling Stones) and I need to turn the volume past 30. When I play Korn I can't turn it up past 20 without getting a headache.
