something i saw about parallel and series wiring

i read in one of the car audio magazines, how this guy had his setup so his 2 channel amp goes into two 4ohm DVC subs in series, which is then wired in parallel (or maybe it was the other way around). his ovarall was still 4ohm, but lower wattage per woofer than if its just straight wired one channel for each woofer. so whats the benefits of this setup, can someone please explain this to me?

So was it just two speakers or was it four speakers?

If he had four speakers this would work. You can't hook two speakers in series and parallel otherwise you short out the amp. The reason to do is to allow the amp to work at max power but it does divide the power to each speaker.

it was two speakers...
i went and dug the magazine back out, here it is...

"...mb quart amp (140x2 in 4ohm) powering the two subwoofers. the dual voice coils on each sub are wired in series and then the two subs are paralleled, which presents the bridged amp with a 4ohm load. in this configuration, each sub gets about 100 watts..."

Dual voice coils allow you to do that, wouldn't try to do that with single coil speakers. I totally forgot about dual voice coils.

a DVC is just a sub that's more feasible for any kind of setup.
the lower wattage if he were to wire them individually happens because to run a 4-ohm DVC by itself, you have only two options to run it. series will give you 8-ohms (which is completely underpowered and useless), or 2-ohms if they were in parallel. The 2-ohms would really pack a punch and give high wattage ratings, but might put strain on some amps.

that's why the best choice is to go with another 4-ohm dvc.
run them EACH in 8ohm series, then put them in parallel to get 4ohms. what becomes simulated is a BIG 4-ohm single high wattage sub. they both get the same amount of current, but not as much current as if you were to run them individually as well.
hope this makes sense.
