Soldering LEDS

So I picked up a inexpensive soldering iron today in hopes of doing my LED conversion soon.
My question is, do I need solder or do I just melt the wires? As you may tell, I have never soldered before, so I dont know. Also, what would be a good way to practice a few solders before I attack the dash and gauge cluster, etc?

Is there a certain type, grade, or size of solder that I need or is it a generic thing?
I appreciate the help man.

Make sure that the solder you buy has flux in it, makes life way easier

Check out this how to I found

Like Jonesi said, I would practice on something, an old remote or toy perhaps, anything really, you could always just strip some wires and try to solder them together.

This is also a great thread for reference

Well I am going to start with the dash and gauge cluster and then work my way to vsa switch, cruise control, window and roof controls, etc.
I will post pics as I go, which will probably be in a few weeks.
And they will most likely be 3mm blue leds. I am going to try to do the entire conversion, but all I have done thus far is the shift gate

I am checking that out now, thanks man.
And just another question, besides the type of solder, but do you need solder EVERYTIME time that you solder something, or can you just melt 2 wires together?

Anytime you have 2 metal wires you want solder to "weld" them together and not only hold them together but complete their circuit, the solder is what melts and holds the wires together as one

Yeah, I'm doing it slowly....Rainy days with nothing else to do, nights when plans fall through etc, so its coming along, but slowly.
Last night I did the cruise/vsa/roof/and foglight buttons.
