Several questions from a new owner
Purchased new 2003 CLS no Nav several months ago and have several audio questions that I can't find using search function
1. Which component in the audio system is the weakest link? Which, when replaced, provides the best benefit; head unit, speaker, or amp? In the past, with other autos, I have added an updated head unit using existing speakers with great results. I have added a sub with inputs off the rear speaker which adds the bass that was lacking.
2. How is the exisitng head unit removed? What needs to be removed to get the old one out? I hate to mess up the leather and molding to get the existing head unit out.
3. How are the existing front speakers removed? What needs to be removed to get them out?
I am leaning to replacing the head unit with a Alpine CDA 7995 with a 4 channel amp companion to the one channel sub amp I have now.
Any suggestions

To removed the head unit you will have to pull out most of the center consol, I believe. The two either silver or wood trim pieces will pop off, along with the side panels. It's really quite easy.
To remove the front speakers you'll need to pull off the door panels. Fortunately, there are only 2 screws that hold the panel on, so it's REALLY easy to pull off. If you need more details, PM me. Good luck

I think the Head unit is the weakest link.
To remove the 6x9 first go in the trunk look up just behind the magnet of the existing speakers you will see 2 silver screws, remove those, go inside the car and pull the grille toward you. It will slide about 1 inch, lift it up and out. Now there are 4 bolts on the speakers, remove those. For the front, lower the window, grab the tweeter frame from inside the window track and pull toward the inside of the car. Remove screw under door handle and chrome door handle. Gently pull the upolstry toward you from the edges. When you have all the clips out lift it to get the the chrome piece at the top out of its track. Push loose handle thru its hole unplug wires. Remove screws from speaker
