Which setup is better? Please help!
I have a 2003 tls and I do not want to take up too much trunk space, but I still want an affordable audio setup with some power and durability. So these are my choices:
1. 12” Alpine type-s sub with an alpine V12 mono amp. This amp will only give 250 RMS to this sub.
2. 12” Alpine type-s sub with a Kenwood 1000W amp. This amp will give this sub 500 RMS. This would have been my choice but I was told to stay with the same brand!
3. 10” kicker S10L7 sub with kicker mono amp kx600. This amp will give this sub 300W RMS. I was told that kicker is better than alpine???
Also, is an enclosed sub box better than a vented sub box? What are the pros and cons of the two?

welcome!
First of all, waht is your budget? Second, what are you going for, just some boom, or an overall well-rounded system? Third, are you biased toward any brand? As far as Vented v. Sealed box is concerned, sealed boxes are usually smaller if you are concerned about trunk space.

If you get the Kicker 10L7 in dual 4 ohms, you'll be able to achieve 600 watts with that amp. I would choose this setup over the other two.
Sealed box will be smaller and provide tighter, quicker bass response.
A vented box will be larger and usaully provide louder, looser bass response.

i'd go with a single 10 ported which has the ability to get loud and still sound good. here's what i'll be running next except with a different amp
1 elemental designs 11ov.2 $175
1 ed spec 1.0ft ported box $110
1 elemental designs nine.2 amp $215
check it out at www.edesignaudio.com. they offer package discounts for multiple items and a 3yr warranty.

of those, i would say #2 assuming you meant a type-r, but it is a tough choice. this is just because i can't stand the look of the new L7s, and usually i would say kicker all the way. Matching the amp to the sub isn't really too important besides making it look nice, but i would think alpine would make better amps than kenwood, so maybe go w/ the alpine if you care about quality equipment over loudness. maybe go w/ compermise and get the type-r and the kicker amp? which set up would be louder would i think be a toss up.
too bad you're limited to circuit city and best buy, cause for $700 you could do WAY better. heck i'd even sell you my RE HC and 1000W memphis amp for only $400 if you were local. but i guess used stuff doesn't have warrentees and all that.

Sealed enclosures can sound good, but to get the same amount of volume you would get out of a ported box the sealed box would have to be significantly bigger. From my experience sealed enclosures are generally used it 1) the person doesn't know how to build the proper tuned ported enclosure 2) they don't have the room to accomadate the port volumes 3) the subwoofer doesn't need it. Of course there are other reasons, but I'm still recovering from my New Year's hangover
I also didn't realize Circuit City carried Alpine or Kenwood anymore. I was just there shopping for christmas gifts and I was told that they were not going to carry anymore Alpine, and Kenwood had been long gone. If you were open to other choices let us know.
