Replaced Stock Speakers (Front)

Hey Guys,

I replaced my front door speakers with 6.5" DB Driver coax's. I was looking for Polk db650's on bizrate and saw the too good to be true price of $27.32 a pair on buy.com. Before I knew it i had placed an order for two pair...of DB Driver db650's...

So I scoured the net looking for reviews of these speakers. I knew that DB made decent subs, but I couldn't find a single customer review anywhere. Since I was going to replace the stock speakers one way or another, I decided that just under $14.00 a piece, I'd at least give them a shot.

So I installed them with moderate modification to the rain guard only. They sound great! You do have to significantly modify the rain guard (I'm talking a jig saw and a utility knife) to get them in there, and you must be careful to insulate the metal where the connections are, they don't sit pretty inside the door, but it was no big deal.

I was really impressed (they have almost the same specs as the db650's only they are about 1/6 inch deeper. I've seen the MSRP as high as $129.99, with most MSRP's sitting around $99.99. You can them all over the place for $30.00 a pair or less.

It really made a big difference. They are bright becuase of the stock EQ settings. They really brought out the sub though. With the increased mid-bass, it makes the sub sound nearly twice as loud. If you want a cheap DIY door speaker replacement, I would recommend these. I'm not saying they are the best speakers out there, but at $30.00 a pair, it's hard to beat...

It looks like you got a killer deal on those, I have always liked the DB's as a entry entry to mid level driver. Congrats on the install

Thanks,

I used to have a BMW 318is and I had Polk MM 6.5 Components, with Polk db650's in the back. I have to say after a few days these DB's sound nearly as clean as the db650's did a couple of years back. Of course, those were powered by an amp, and these are not...So...I'm thinking about putting them in the rear doors as well, but I am concerned about the mouting depth, and how much brighter the whole system would be with two pairs...

I checked up on Southbounds tweeter rolloff, I might try something like that.

It's actually the same as the polk 6.5" coax's, db650. I got mine off of buy.com, but I saw them other places as well (ebay I think).

Hope this helps.

Limited info available at www.dbdrive.net

That's funny. I bought these db Driver db650's off of eBay before I read this thread and thought I had got a a great deal on the Polk db650's. They came today, and I remembered this thread. They sucked me in, too!
So, do I install them, or re-sell them on eBay and try again for the Polk's? Sounds like you're happy with them. Maybe I'll give them a shot.

I'm pleased with them. I used to sell/install car audio a few years ago and I would equate them with the db650's (and I'm a big Polk fan). I'm not saying that these are the best 6.5"s in the world, by any means...but for $30 bucks, I am quite pleased. My plan was to return them if they didn't sound good (I still have one pair in the box), but I can't justify spending $60-$70 more with little to no improvement.

I think that these were released a year or two ago, got no press, never sold and now are being clearanced. I honestly wasn't expecting much, but I'd to say that I got way more than I paid for, and I should feel pretty lucky for that....

Blue TL-

Are you using the new speakers with the stock head unit? This is what I want to do but all the installers around me get this sour look on their faces when I tell them my car has a factory Bose system init.

Do you still have one of the factory drivers around? I need to know the ohm rating and (if possible) the SPL sensativity too. Of course I'm not up to taking apart one of my door panels to get one out myself, just lazy I guess....... :P
